Hi. I just had my first son who is great!!! Anyways, my water broke at midnight the day before he was due. I went to the hospital and after them doing a couple of tests they finally confirmed it was my water that broke and admitted me. By 9 the next morning I still wasn't having contractions so they induced me. By 8 that night I was only 3 centimeters dilated and my sons heartrate kept on dropping with each contraction so they had to do an emergency c-section. Everyone in my family has had normal deliveries and I am wondering why I wouldn't dilate. Has anyone had this happen to them also? Thanks!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for everyone's responses. I actually wasn't upset over having to have a c-section, just confused on why I wouldn't dilate. There is pros and cons to both vaginal and c-section deliveries and like a lot of you said, the end result was a health baby boy. The doctor told my husband and I that if this happened in the times before c-sections both myself and my baby wouldn't have survived so I am just grateful for the technology of today.

I forgot to mention that I had a 8 pound 5 ounce baby ... I know that is not huge but maybe he was just too big for my birth canal. When he was delivered, the doctors said they have never seen a c-section baby with such a big (2 inch) cone head ... my little guy sure was trying to come out naturally.

Thanks again for everyones input!!!

the same thing happened to me. My daughter was 10 days past my due date when i went into labor. They made me go in finally at 11 at night because the contractions were so strong I couldnt sleep but I was only 2 centimeters. By 8 the next night I was still only 4 centimeters. But her heart rate kept dropping so they did an emergency C-section. They broke my water at 5 but it didnt help anything along.

my name is A., i also had a c-section for my first baby, after 36 hours of labor i would not dialate past 3 cm. sometimes it just happens, its nothing you did. and it is still possiable for you to have children vaginaly, (its called a v-back). i had my c-section for my first child and then two vaginal births. so your next child could very well be a v-back.

Hi M. ...the same thing happened with my first child (a girl) 12 years ago. I was a few days late, my water broke but I had no contractions...they enduced me and 20 hours after they did a bikini-cut c-section due to the risk of infection & other complications. She was 7 Lbs. 1 oz. 3 years later I vaginally delivered my son who weighed 9 Lbs. 6 oz. with no complications and just this past month - December 2006, (8 years after my son was born) I vaginally delivered my second daughter without complications & she weighed 8 Lbs. even. I hope this helps relieve your worries. ~M.~

I myself have never had a c-section, however, one of my best friends have. Her water broke the night of her due date. She started getting her contractions and decided on an epidural. After laboring for around 26 hours she wouldn't dilate past 3 cm. They ended up giving her an emergency c-section. They soon discovered that my god-daughter's forehead was pressing against her mother's pubic bone. She just recently had her second baby this past September. She decided to go the c-section route again. She was a little upset in the beginning she didn't get the chance to experience a Vaginal birth, but she soon realized it's not the type of delivery you have it's the fact that you yourself brought your child(ren)into this world. Congratulations on your new baby.

Hi M.,
I had this happen to me twice. I have to ask did you try to deliver natural or did you have an epidual early on when they induced you? Because I found that when I had my son, I went natural for most of the 26 hours I was in labor. I was very tense and had a hard time letting my body relax. i never dialated more thatn 3 cm. When I had my daughter I got my epidural early and dialated much more than I had the first time around. I think i got to 7. I stll delivered her by c-section but it was because her cord wrapped around her neck. I think the more relaxed you are during deliveries the better the delivery.

Hi! I had a similar situation! Pregnant with my daughter in 2004, I went into labor on Thanksgiving evening, my water did not break though, they had to break it for me. Anyway, I went into labor on a Thursday night and finally Sunday, late night around 11 pm, they decided to do an emergency c-section as I went from 9.5 cm dialted down to 8.5 cm- they don't know whay it happened but just called it failuer to progress. Kind of a let down as I was in hard labor Thursday night, all day Friday, all day Saturday and all day Sunday before they finally pulled her after midnite on Monday....... Does that help?

Hi,

I had my daughter by c-section two years ago. I was not dilating and only got to 4cm. She was also fluctuating with her heart rate so I had to stay on my side and keep flipping from each side. They told me she was not progressing down the birth canal because she was to big and that was why I wasn't dilating. Well I had my c-section and she was 6lbs 2oz, not very big. It ended up that she was not coming down the birth canal because her body was facing the wrong way.

Everyone in my family had 'perfect' births as well. I was induced and finally had to have a c-section after three days of not much progress and my son's heart rate falling. I felt badly at first but then I realized how lucky we are to live in an age of technology where difficult births are not life threatening to the mother or baby. There is nothing wrong with you!!! These things just happen and I am so happy that your baby was born healthy:)

My daughter was born in a similar way. I was induced 9 days after my due date (I wanted to wait but it was Aug. 1005 and it was HOT). My water broke a couple hours later, then after about 28 hours I got a fever. The doctor shut off the pitocin and lowered the epidural, then my duaghter's heartrate started dropping. The doctor decided to do an emergency c-section. I never dilatted past 8cm. It took me a while to get over this, I was devastated. But I know the important thing is that I have a happy healthy little girl. I try to remind myself that every delivery that ends with a healthy mother and child is normal, not just vaginal deliveries.

M.,
I agree with Cheryl. The same thing happened to me. Well, a little different. I did dialate, but just couldn't get him out. My son was really big, but the thing that stopped me was that his head was turned funny. So like Cheryl said, everyone is different, even if you DID dialate you may not have been able to have him vaginally anyway. Now worries though, you are all healthy. GL!!!

M.,
Everybody is different, just b/c others in the family had Vaginal deliveries doesnt mean you will. Remember it doesnt matter HOW he got here, as long as he got here safe & healthy!
Dont sweat the small stuff!
take care!
