Hi, Marianne!
I, personally, was induced (42 years ago) because Mom needed to have me on Saturday, or my Daddy wouldn't be there!! (He was a Seminary student and worked part-time, at the time, and I have 2 older brothers, who were 4 1/2 and 6.) My original "due date" was Oct 7, and I was born on the 2nd. My sister was induced (also 5 days early, 19 months later) because Mom's uterus was completely "inverted". (Doctors still can't figure out how she got pregnant; I can ~ GOD!) BTW, neither of us was delivered by c-section!
My oldest son, who is 16, was supposed to be induced at 38 weeks, but I went into Labor, beginning March 24 (he was due May 5), 5 times over the next 3 1/2 weeks. He was actually born on Tuesday nite/Wednesday morning (3 minutes after midnite) before I was going to be induced that Friday. I had to have an emergency c-section because my mother and one of my OB/Gyn's "overdosed" me on my anti-labor med (brethine), saying I "couldn't" be in labor, because it was "too early"....yadda, yadda, yadda...RIGHT (who was having the contractions, here?). He was 7 lbs, 15 1/2 oz, and 20 1/2 inches long.
My little guy was a planned C-section, because I had to have the emergency C with his brother, so I never went into labor with him. The funny thing about my pregnancy with Noah was that the doctors who were doing my sonograms kept commenting on how BIG my baby's head was! I just looked at them and smiled and said, "It doesn't matter how big his head is....I'm having a C-section, anyway!" :) He does have a big head, though...we have to buy his shirts a full size larger than his pants, because we can't get his head through the collar of the "appropriate" size! :) (Don't they say big brains need a big skull to hold them? LOL) He was 5 lbs, 15 oz, and 19 inches long.
As far as inducing because of the baby's size, I really have to disagree with ACOG in most cases on that one. A friend of mine gave birth just a few days before we had Noah, and her baby was almost 10 lbs. She ended up having to have a C-section because of the baby's size. I don't think it's the induction that causes the need for a c-section in those cases, it's because the baby can't get through the birth canal! (mind you, ACOG is mostly made up of MEN, am I right?? LOL)
OK, Moms who are reading my story....Do NOT get scared by my story! I'm a type 1 diabetic who has had the stinking disease since I was 13 years old, so I had a FEW complications with both of my pregnancies, more so with the 2nd than my 1st because of my age. I actually LAUGH about most of what happened to me, because it is just so doggoned FUNNY watching these people who are supposed to be professionals "freak out" over the stuff that I do or has happened to me!
Marianne, Please give me a call sometime. I'd love to share more stories with you! My number is ###-###-####. The only thing I'd change about the births of either of my sons is for ME to have more control over what happened, instead of the doctors.
