Hi momas,
Last year I was the godmother to my nephew. It's almost his one year anniversary of the baptism. I would like to get him something special each year in celebration of his special day. Any ideas? I would like it to be something special, but not some tacky keepsake.

What can I do next?

It's so sweet that you are taking your role as Godmother seriously. I see so many people treat this role as such a meaningless tradition. The reason why my kids have no godparents is because I didn't know anybody who was willing to take it seriously and actually become a spiritual mentor for my children.

Gift ideas- perhaps new, age-appropriate bibles (toddler bible, preschooler bible, kid bible, etc.)? Also if I'm not mistaken, Precious moments has a series of statues that you could buy annually until you have the whole set for him- though that might be more appropriate for a girl. Perhaps framed scrapbook pages of his spiritual growth during that year that you could give to him each year, eventually to be combined into a book.

We have 3 godchildren. Through the years we remembered them each Christmas with a unique Christmas ornament. My intention was this: it was a reminder each year that someone else loved them and cared about their faith-life. (I'm sure as children, this extra present wasn't one of the most exciting they had to open!)
When they become adults and leave home, they will have something of their own (a collection of Christmas ornaments) to take with them and start their own family traditions. Hopefully it speaks of the roots they have with their family and their faith.

How about a savings bond that will mature when he's in college? I know that it's not a lot of interest, but it will be there for him when he might really need the money.

I believe you can buy it at the bank.

Hi K.-

How nice of you to remember your godson. One of my kiddos has two very good friends of mine as godparents. They live in Philly...and every year...without fail...the send along some eagles thing...he has (after 17 years) quite a collection of eagles items...sippy cups...hats...jerseys...key chains...etc.

In a family of redskins fans (...I know...we still have hope for the future...LOL)...he remains a steadfast eagles fan...and feels a connection with them across the miles...

I know it is not religious in orientation...but he has enjoyed! Maybe something like that?

Best Luck!

I am always a fan of getting a book or two to remember a special occasion. Kids can never have too many books. Some of my favorites come from www.cph.org. They have great board books for little ones, like things I see at baptism, and things I hear at church. They have things called arch books which tell one Bible story in rhyming verse and they have lots of great children's Bibles. Good luck!
