I have the same situation. We bought him the box set of baseball cards from the year that he was born (2009). We figured that it was an investment and a fun "little boy" gift for when he is older. His Daddy is a huge baseball fan. Hope this helps.

A hard-cover copy of your favorite childrens' book. My son's godmother gave us an inscribed copy of "The Giving Tree"... I clearly remember reading it the night of the christening and SOBBING my eyes out. That theme of selfless giving takes on all new meaning when you become a parent. I have also given lovely child bibles and there is a nice series of lift-the-flap bible stories that my son loved, even as a baby.

I love the suggestion someone wrote about writing a note to your godchild each anniversary. That is something I wish I did!

My godmother lived in Europe and couldn't send gifts, so she would deposit some money in a savings account each holiday and birthday. When I had my confirmation, she sent the full amount to me. Although it doesn't seem like money is very personal, I was able to put it towards my first car. I will never forget that!

these are personalize story books that "create" the childs name. My daughter got the fairytale one when she was born. and when she turned 3 - i started reading it to her everynight - she knows her letters know, has memorized part of the book and knows alot of the flowers - we were outside and some daffodils came up and she said "look mommy we have angel trumpets!"

my son got the same book for his baptism - he's only 20 mos and i've read it a few times to him (but not quite ready for a long book).

i got the book for a friend's baby's baptism and absolutely loved it.

you have an an inscribed message on the first page.

Nothing beats savings bonds other than establishing a College fund and or bank account. It's funny because I have created many interesting things for my children. Journals from birth to present some what documenting their developmental progress along with pictures. I made sure to include pictures of them with their favorite clothes, toys etc. Some other creative things that I have done is a family tree that shows them added at birth. My friends children enjoyed the pictorial journals and the family tree also. As they progressed to their teenage years, while they thank Dear auntie for the items that they say they will cherish for life (I believe them) they are always looking for money. so I do the savings bonds in addition to keeping the memorable snap shots of their growth. They have used this for show and tell at school and timeline projects. Another good idea is their own time capsule (boys think this is cool!) with a date attached as to when it can be opened. This spearheaded years of conversation, imagination and wonderment as the child tries to guess what's in side. In the end, whatever you give will be deeply appreciated.

When our daughter was born, his colleagues pitched in on this "baby block" (first on the provided link) http://www.craftefamily.com/gift_ideas.asp

It had all the details regarding our daughter's birth - I normally don't like tchotchkys, but I really love this one because it's personal, small, and can remain in their room for a long time - more important to the parent than the child for now.....I know it's something that would sit on a shelf.

College tuition will be well over $100K/year by the time our kids are there, and I'd recommend either establishing a 529 or contributing to one as well. Even if this child doesn't go to college, the funds can be transferred to someone else who can benefit from the account without IRS penalties. Starting saving on college is already behind by the time the child is born according to our accountant.

it probably depends on your social circle. it sounds like i can't really help you, we don't do big gifts for baptisms as the child is an infant and has no clue what's going on anyway, and we make it more about the spiritual event. godparents in our family usually give a gift from the bible book store, a cross to hang on the wall or a plaque or book of some kind. like i said though i think it would depend more on your expectations as a godparent in your particular situation. maybe there is someone close to the family who can give some suggestions as to what would be expected?

I had a friend give a really nice blanket that was embroidered with the child's name, a verse from the bible, and a cross. I loved the idea.

A bible with a really nice inscription would be wonderful. My twins also received an inscribed metal train money bank. Bible-themed picture books are also great. The Tale of the Three Trees is my favorite.

You can get a creative saying put on a onsie for him to wear. We are Catholic and one year, we got "Cradle Catholic" for the baptism. So cute! And I kept it for his baby book. You could do "Child of God", "Itty Bitty Catholic", or something like that.

Religious night lights were also a great gift, and we used all the time. We told our little ones that their god-parent was praying for them, so to look for the light in their room as their prayer.

We loved anything homemade, if you can knit or sew. It meant so much, and we kept it for years.

Also - something we do for our god-children, is for every year, at the baptism anniversary, we send a note, telling them how we pray for them, how proud we are of them, and how much God loves them. Not everyone remembers a baptism anniversary, but it tells the child, that the god-parent never forgets.

Just some ideas. Good luck and God Bless

There are some wonderful hardcover books by Max Lucado that are truly beautiful, the writings and pictures, with biblical themes that make great baptism gifts for boys. Another idea is the My Very Own Name books, the animal version is great for boys, you can use his first and last nameor first and middle name. Check out Iseeme.com

When my son was baptized, he received several nice crosses with Bible verses and other sayings inscribed on them. And I do mean several. One thing that he received that I really appreciated was a "toddler's" Bible. It has amazing full page illustrations, and the bible stories are easy to read. I have been reading to him since he was born, and this was a book that I just put into our bedtime reading rotation.

We just had our son baptized and he wore two crosses. One was my husbands given to him at his baptism and one was a gift from my sons godmother. Kind of a nice tradition.
