Getting Used to Short Hair

I just recently had 6 inches cut off of my hair and I am still not sure it was a good idea, I know I have had the same dull hairstyle for many years and needed a change but I keep looking in the mirror and I really want my long hair back. The style is cute, but I just don't think I look good with short hair (I can't even put it in a ponytail) and when my friends see me, some comment and some don't, so I don't have much feedback, my husband tells me it looks good and to stop obsessing and it will grow back, but I am in a hurry for it to grow long again. any ideas on how to get used to my short hairdo?thanks so much!

What can I do next?

I love long hair, but just don't have the time to take care of it. I keep my hair short, but not really short. Maybe try styling it different, to find a way that you like it. Having short hair could grow on you. Just relax, that is one thing good about hair, it always grow back. Hope this helps!

I can sympathize. Every time I cut my hair, I IMMEDIATELY start growing it back out. I just this week got extensions, because I had a bad haircut and am not patient about growing it back out. That was an expensive proposition!

You're not alone ; ) I've had my hair short, long, medium etc over the years. I just recently cut off 13in to donate to locks of love. I figured if I can grow it and give, why not! It's hair, it grows back! I haven't had my hair this short in 4yrs so I'm still getting used to it, it grows on me everyday, then there is the day I'm like dang it... I should of let it grow more before I cut it! LoL If it makes you feel anybetter, I went to a labor day picnic the day after cutting it all off, NONE Of my family even made a comment! Heck, my Mom wouldn't of known if my youngest didn't show her the bag of hair and I live with her!! LOL I'm goign to go put some highlights in my hair to spice it up, as I haven't put any color in it for a few years either. I'm sure I'll grow this out again after a cut or two, and donate again, because I can, and it makes me feel good about having the short hair, I just remember why I did it ; ) Like the others say, have fun! Color it, curl what you can, style it different everyday! I've gotten more and more compliments as the weeks go by, and that just helps me like it a bit more ; ) Good Luck and have fun!

I personally love short hair. With my fulltime job, we aren't allowed to have hair past our shoulders without having it pulled back. When I am doing parties with my Discovery Toys business, I like the convience of not having to have a lot of "fuss". Plus, I have always been hair style challenged :) Simplier the better for me! Just enjoy for a while before you decide to go back to the long hair. It just might grow on you.

I'm going through the same thing right now. I had hair to the middle of my back, and I cut it kind of like Halle Berry or Winona Ryder! This is the first time I have ever done anything like this, and most of the time I regret it. Everyone tells me it looks good, but I still want my hair back! All I can say is, accept it, and in about six months you'll be back to your old self again.

I too once had long hair but before I had children I wanted to experiment with my hair and went for a really short cute cut for a few yrs and loved it now I keep getting it cut but not as short as I once did I need some to pull back into a cute ponytail.Since you are unable to at this point and I have been there use a straightner to your hair and style it you'll look cute and others will comment on it.You have to try to make it look cute I can't just wash and go like others I have really thick hair and it takes time to do.Good Luck it is a change and maybe you'll soon how cute it is to have short hair.By the way get a straighnting balm and it will help too they sell some good ones by Sunsilk.Sahm of 2 and 1 more on the way

Good Morning L., I understand how you feel. I have very long hair and I am 57 yr old. I wanted it long ONE more time before (in my mind anyway) I was to old to have long hair.

Play with the style, fluff it, crunch it. OH yea I was a hairstylist for many years too. :)) You can use side combs, go have highlights put in it, it's so much easier to change colors with shorter hair. Can always remove the color if it's not you. But since the cut is new it's just going to take time to really enjoy it. Some may not comment as they just don't know how you feel about it. Some might be able to see you just don't like it and won't comment.

When we get so used to a certain thing it is SO hard to get used to something new. It's why a lot of people buy the same make & model of Car's, trucks, appliances, makeup...etc
We don't want change, its tried and true and we like it that way.

Your hair will grow back L., but in the mean time HAVE fun with it. Your hair is only a part of who you are appearance wise, it's inside that Shows forth the person you are.

God Bless
K. Nana of 5
PS you could always have extensions put in :)

I can only feel your pain! I did the same thing and I don't know what in the world possessed me. I finally listened to my husband and reverted back to a style I wore 10 years ago. Now I have to let it grow for awhile before I can have it cut the way I like it. It's not as much the length for me as the style, but it's the length too.

I had long hair for several years too and donated 10 inches to locks of love and did seem weird to have it that short for a while but I got used to it and it was long again in about 18 months and have had it cut short again and now growing it back out to long hair again so after you get past the shock the first time, don't be surprised if you cut it again after it grows long. This last time I cut it short was because my hair had a lot of damage and figured it would grow out healthy if I just got it cut short and started over again. It will grow back and my hair grows fairly fast. It tends to grow faster if you get it trimmed every few months.

I recently had my first major hair cut in 23 years. I had 26 inches cut off. I can completely understand what a shock it is to look in the mirror and see a different person staring back. I donated my hair to Locks of Love so I am pleased I was at least able to help a child or two in need. My only advice is to enjoy the new low maintenance do. It's definately a big change but your husband made a good point when he said at least it will grow back. I try to see the positive in everything and I remind myself to be thankful my hair will grow back when cancer patients do not have the same fortune.

I am always changing my hair style, and to help me get used to a new style (that I'm not so sure was a good idea)there are a couple of things I try. First of all, is it long enough to try styling a different way? Maybe try to part it on the opposite side, or the middle. If it is styled to go forward, maybe try blow-drying it to go back, or tuck the sides behind your ears. Does the style include bangs? Try wearing them styled to the side, or down covering the entire forehead. Try curling it, or flat-ironing it, as these can give the same cut drastically different looks. Last, but not least, I have resorted to a headband to help me get thru a bad hair stage, giving it time to grow out a little more and helping me to get to a better stage. Oh, and don't forget to "spice" up your make up. Shorter hair focuses the attention on your facial features, giving you a great opportunity to use make up to "play up" your best features! Good Luck!! Hope this helps!

Maybe try a color or highlights that help spice it up more.

You can always start with a temporary color to find what works for you and then do something a bit more permanent.

I can sympathize with you! I have always had long hair. Down to my waist sometimes. & it always had a style to it, so it wasn't long & dull. In recent years I've had a hard time keeping it healthy, so I had to have it cut to above my shoulders. It barely fit into a clip. It was at least layered, so I curled it different ways & just tried to deal with it. It helped that people told me how much they liked it, but the way I was styling it, I'm sure was very outdated, but it was all I knew! Anyways, 6 months later & alot of TLC my hair is 1 inch above my bra strap. I'm finally enjoying it again. I thought I was doomed to short hair forever! Anyways, play with it, clip it, barrette it (if possible), curl it treat it with TLC & you'll have some length back in no time!

Been there done that. I have recently been feeling this pain. Wearing my hair long most of my life last year I took it short because of chemotherapy hair loss. Now I am through that I am growing it back out and finding maybe short is better. I do miss pony tails but I also don't have to mess with pulling it back. Also looking at past pictures I found I look younger with short hair and my stylist says that is true in most cases. Look at it as a youthful experience.

Hi L.,

I feel your pain, I did the same thing a LONG time ago. Unless you want to go and get hair extensions there isn't much you can do except wait it out. You may find something good comes from this along the way. As your hair grows out, you will have many different opportunities to try different hair styles - you might just find "the one" you've been looking for in this process.

In the meantime keep your chin up and remember it is only hair, it does grow out and it does not change the person you are on the inside!
