Ford Explorer Drivers

Hey moms. Have a quick question. I am looking for a bigger vehicle with the family growing and have been all over craigslist because I want to just pay cash and have my car or SUV paid for. I would honestly like an SUV but they are normally more, however I've seen tons and tons of Ford Explorers like 95's an 98's for as low as 2500....all claiming to run fine and everything. I looked at Kelly Blue Book and was shocked at what low value these Explorers have. Is there a reason ? Is this a too good to be true kind of SUV? Do any of you have experience with these Fords? I have never owned a Ford, let alone an SUV so it just surprised me that this is cheaper than a decent car ... Thanks you!

What can I do next?

I have a 2000 Explorer that I bought for $2900 last year. It's now got 100,000 miles on it and I really like it. The size is perfect; big enough for what I need but not so big that I feel out of control in it. I like that it has 4x4 as we have long winters here and it's good in the snow. I had to replace a brake line, sparkplugs and wires and a portion of the exhaust system (a pipe needed replacing) but those seem like routine things to me...at least to have to do to a "new to you" car. Gas mileage isn't as good as my tiny Hyundai but what is? I get about 24 miles per gallon. I would buy another one based on my experience with this one. Definately get a carfax though, I think that's a really good idea!

they catch on fire easily driving down the road. I had one started over heating so we pulled over and all of a sudden it ignited. we were on the highway out of state on the way to an out of state funeral and it was a windchill of 5 degrees and I had a baby with me. We got the baby out and lost everything in the car. This is why they are nicknamed ford exploders. I will never buy a nother ford ever. after this happened I was told explorers are notourious for catching on fire with no warning. We had no warning at all no signs something was going to go wrong with it just a fire and it burnt to the ground in less than 5 minutes. That is my experience I would not advise it

i owned 3 explorers and loved them i drove a 96 almost to death. I was the only owner on that car. It was traded in 2004 for a 2002 explorer with a 3rd row of seats. Well that car had been flooded and i had to put in a new tranny and found out about the damage after getting it repaired because the mechanic doing the work spotted some issues and i carfaxed to find out the story. i traded that for a mustang and bought for 500 a 92 a year later from a friend who got a newer car. I traded it last year with my mustang for my flex.
The new baby put an end to my mustang days. The new explorer was out of my price range this time. I always loved mine. the models from 2001-2004 had some tranny issues. I believe they are squared away now.

I have never heard of one exploding into fire. I think there was a recall on wiring of the cruise control. So you might check into that.
We had one and loved it. We wore it out pulling our boat over the years. We now have a 1998 Expedition we bought used years ago and it runs great.

I have a 95" Ford Explorer and I LOVE IT! We did have to have the transmission replaced last year ($1800.00) other than that it runs great. Really feel safer driving it in the winter...(live in Michigan). When I get a newer vehicle this summer I want another explorer. It seems like someone told me all SUV's blue books are pretty low?? Ford has also been really good about sending me any recall notices and fixing them....15 years after the SUV was made! They are harder on gas though...

I loved my explorer! We drove litterally across country in ours Alabama-Washington State, then 6 months later Washington State to Washington DC. With the dog, cat, all our stuff and an 18 month old in the summer then winter and it did awesome! If we hadn't had to get a minivan we'd still have it, or a newer one. And remember that a '95 explorer was released last quarter of '94. So they are 16 years old.

My husband has had three Explorers 1995, a 2000 and currently drives a 2005. We've had no problems with any of them. He loves the Ford Explorer.

p.s. Way to go, paying cash with NO payment! whooo-hooo!

We have a 95 Explorer and it is still going strong with 175,000 mi. We have had minor work done on it, but nothing major yet. We bought it 6 years ago and paid cash $4,500. We were looking into selling it to get a van, we need 3rd row seats with baby #4 on the way, but when we seen that it is only worth 2500, its smarter to just keep if for a second car for now. It is not very good on gas milage, but thats the only thing I dont like about it. We did get a recall notice on the cruise control, it was fixed for free.

Mine was a 2005 and it saved mine and my baby's life twice, as good as it held up in two major accidents. I don't know about the ones that old but I loved mine! My husband sold fords for years and loves them too. The only problem I ever heard of was in the late 90s some of them had tire problems and were recalled. It was that a tire would explode, that's why they were called exploders. I never heard about them having a problem catching on fire. I would google the year and explored to see any online reviews. And make sure you look up the carfax with the vin number before buying, and have a mechanic friend with you too (if not your husband)!

My Explorer was the best vehicle I've ever driven! I bought it new in '92, and retired it 12 years later with 375,000 miles on it! I had to get something larger as the back seat was really getting cramped with 3 car seats. I upgraded to a used '03 Expedition. I have driven it for 6 years and it has been wonderful too!
