Our 3 year old grandson is getting bitten by especially fleas and spiders and we have had the house and animal and yards treated for these critters, but it seems like they find him and they get very serious looking to the point I need to take him to the doctor. Do you have any advice for us? Thank you so much. M.

hey M.,
I have an allergic reaction to mosquito bites and break out in welts. It is miserable. I have discovered that if I increase my intake of vitamin B12 that I don't get bitten as much. I know that there are chewable versions of this in health food stores and this may help. Additionally, if I do get bitten, I now carry Benadryl topical cream with me and it stops my body from reacting so harshly.

Hi, M.. My son has been eaten up by bugs and spiders over the last week or so. The bites are horrible, welted, itch/burn, etc. I took him to urgent care and got antibiotics and benedryl, which hasven't helped. Yesterday my brother in law, a nurse/PA by trade, gave me this treatment: he made a paste with powdered meat tenderizer (yes, the kind you get in the seasonings for meat) and water. My understanding is that it contains something that breaks down toxins in the bite/meat. Anyway, all you do is make the paste, pat that on the bites. It instantly took the sting and itch away. It dries and flakes off. We did this for my son and within a day, the smaller bites are gone, the bigger, infected bites are no longer swollen and have scabbed over. It was amazing how much it helped. Good luck!

My kids get those too, but in their case its mosquito bites and ants.

What I do and works for them is:
1) I put "Bactine" spray on the bites, daily. (this helps the itching and healing and preventing infection) I personally apply it morning, afternoon, and before bed. And put a band-aid on it prior to when my kids go to bed at night.

2) I give them an ORAL antihistimine. Like Kids Claritin (does not cause drowsiness), or Bendaryl (which does cause drowsiness). But I mostly use Claritin.

Because bites cause itching, you need to give them an antihistimine. This helps stop itching and the ill effects of the bites, keeps the venom from spreading.

Watch for infection of the bites... but Bactine helps that.
My parents used Bactine on our bites, when we were kids too. I swear by Bactine. It comes in a spray or liquid form. I like the spray because its easier to apply on kids. It does NOT hurt or sting.

Hope this helps.
But of course, if the bites seem like it is getting infected, take him to the Doctor. Some kids are more allergic to insect bites.

All the best,
Susan

I have an oil that you can put on him to keep the bugs off. There is also an orange spray at the health food store that you would be ok spraying before he goes out. It is not toxic and he can play in it.

God Bless!

First, I know you want to protect your grandchildren but be very careful about the pesticides that are being used as they accumulate in the body and over time could cause a problem. Make sure that he is not around for at least a day after any spraying and don't let him play in the areas that have been treated if they have just been watered.

Second, look into some supplements that he might be needing. Vitamin B's, especially B12 are useful and look into more natural methods for protecting him. My sister, niece, and my daughter are all ones that the bugs have loved. It is painful to watch!

You might need to treat his bed or where ever it is that he sleeps. Also have you had the underneath of your home treated. We have a friend who has pets and she treats everything but her animals still have pests due to surrounding pets not being treated. I hope that you are able to get it under control. Just remember that if you put cortizone on the bites it will help to stop the itch and if it looks bad you can wash it with some poroxide. If it opens up then put some neosporne on it. Good Luck.

Hello, We are also grandparents. Isn't it the greatest. I also babysit some of them and have babysat most of them at some point in their lives and even had custody of one for three years. Anyway, I have heard that Avon's Skin So Soft is a good repellent for bug bites. You might try that.
Good luck with your precious grandchild.

I have read that garlic works. Both your grandson and dog can eat it, it helps ward off the fleas. Buy two bulbs at the grocery store, plant one, find some good recipes for the other. Might even cut a clove in half and rub it on his feet/ankles to see if that helps.Good luck. I am a magnet to fleas, fortunately we moved to an area that they do not thrive in:)

Try "Skin So Soft" sold by Avon. It works wonders for me and one of my sons who seem to attract flea bites. I put a little in his bath and no more biting. For myself I rub it on my skin after a shower. I also have Terminex spray the inside of my house when the bites start happening in the home. Funny, but mosquitos are attracted to my older son and husband most. For them--insect repellent with Deet works best. Off now sells one that smells better than it used to. There's also a new product you wear on your belt that keeps the bugs away.
