The past week, my kids have woken up COVERED in mesquito bites. Each night, we try something new, but nothing seems to be working. My poor 18 month old woke up looking like a couple fed on his legs for hours. So sad.
So far we've tried.....
*Putting them in long pants and socks to bed
*Keeping the ceiling fan on high in their room
*Spraying the room with mesquito killer
*Washing their sheets in bleach
Anyone else have any ideas? My poor babies are spending the day itching their little bites and their nights beinga human buffett.
Side note- our room is on the other side of the house, and we have an infant in our room. Other than a bite on my hand (which I may have gotten somewhere else) none of us have been bitten :-(
Hi Anji, my brother and I always got eaten up by mosquitos, we were given B1 vitamin supplement. It works like a charm. Before I went as far as putting any kind of repellent in their beds while they slept, I would give this a try, it sends out an odor that mosquitos don't like but we can't smell. Try B1, it's good for them anyway.

A., I know I'm late in responding to this but today I found out my daughter has Scabies. these are mites (similar to bed bugs). We thought they were ant bites from her rolling in the grass and then we thought they were tiny spiders in her room. We went to the Dr. and found out it's Scabies and you HAVE to treat it. It doesn't go away on it's own and it gets worse. They are tiny bites all over her and she itches to death. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Okay, both of my solutions are a tad crazy but work. The first is drinking Tang (the orange kind) and the other I use every time I mow the yard--I stuff bounce fabric softner sheets inside the collar of my shirts and rub the sheets all over my clothes. I am also one who suffers from the feeding frenzy. Mosquitos are awful here too.

I don't know from experience that this works, but here is what a few people have told me.
Take a dryer sheet and fold it up and put it in their pockets.
It never hurts to try something new. If it doesn't work at least they will smell extra fresh! Ha
Hope this helps.

Hi A., are you absolutely positive they don't have bed bugs, spiders, or fleas in their room?!? You might look into other options besides mesquitos. If it is only mesquitos, you can buy some citronilla patches at walmart, they peel off and stick on to any surface. When we went camping we stuck one on our shirt and one on our socks and had no problems with bug bites. You could stick some on their headboards and footboards and even on their PJ's. Also, is there somewhere mesquitos are attracted to in their room or outside their window such as a bucket or puddle of water?

There is a product that Avon sells called skin so soft Bath oil or the is a spray on body oil. It's a moisturizer for your skin but it also works great for mosquitos. Just spray it on your kids. It doesn't have an oily feeling so I don't think it will bother the kids. I am an Avon Representative so you can go to my online store. www.youravon.com/stephaniechaney Hope it works as good for you as it does for me!

My first thought is, how would all those mosquitoes get in your house? Doesn't make sense to me. If the kids sleep under sheets or covers, how would the mosquitoes get under there to bite their legs? Check on two things: 1) Fleas. Do you have a cat or dog with fleas? Those things can live in your house a long time. Your kids could be allergic to flea bites which itch like crazy and can leave scars. 2) Could it really be chigger bites ("red bugs"). They hang out in the grass and are most lively at dusk. They seem invisible and you don't feel them on you. They concentrate many bites around tight places (where socks are, waistbands, leg bands). If you go to bed with them on you, they can bite you all night and you wouldn't know it. (I don't know anything about bed bugs, but research that too!)
There are many home remedies for bites. I use Listerine household cleaner, several capfuls in a tub adn soak a few minutes or dab a bit on each bite. If they take Benedryl antihistimine, it might help but they might get sleepy from it. Bites can get infected too so relieve that itching and make sure they keep their hands and nails really clean!
Just be sure to find out what it really is and keep it from happening again.

Are you sure they are mosquitos? Sounds like it might be something else... Do you have pets that spend time on that side of the house - if so, might be fleas instead of mosquitos. If you are sure they are mosquitos, and if you haven't already, you might want to check around the outside of the house around their rooms and in your attic for standing water that might be breeding the mosquitos and keeping them around that area of the house. Mosquitos can sometimes breed in the standing water that collects from your AC if the unit is in your attic and not properly draining.

my grandfather swears by using bounce sheets to repel mosquitos. He says that when he goes fishing he rubs himself with one of the sheets and then lets it hang out his pocket. Also, Avon has a product called skin so soft which also works as a mosquito repelant. Both of these are nontoxic and safe for most children. Soon the weather will turn cold and the mosquitos will die out. Have you tried to find the source of your infestation? Check for standing water where Mosquitoes lay their eggs. Good Luck

They both work. The top one you spray in your yard, the second you can dilute down to use on your kids. They will smell a little until they dry, but the bugs can not STAND the stuff.

I read somewhere that spraying listerine around the area keeps mosquitos away. since it is not harmful to humans you might try spraying some on the bedding, crib (or bed) around the floor and even on the blankets. I have not tried it so I can't say it works. Also, something is causing them to come into the room and not yours. They like heat so make sure the children are bathed before they go to bed, that way there is no sweat on them; check for any cracks they might come in through and make sure there is nothing laying around that is holding moisture, such as wet towels, diapers and water

Check out this information on Bed Bugs:
How can you tell if the residence is infested?
Bed bugs infest only a small proportion of residences, but they should be suspected if residents complain of bites that occurred while sleeping. The bedroom and other sleeping areas should be carefully examined for bed bugs and signs of bed bug activity. Folds and creases in the bed linens, and seams and tufts of mattresses and box springs, in particular, may harbor bed bugs or their eggs. They may also be found within pleats of curtains, beneath loose areas of wallpaper near the bed, in corners of desks and dressers, within spaces of wicker furniture, behind cove molding, and in laundry or other items on the floor or around the room. Sometimes, characteristic dark brown or reddish fecal spots of bed bugs are apparent on the bed linens, mattress or walls near the bed. A peculiar coriander-like odor may be detected in some heavily infested residences. Adhesive-based traps used for sampling insects or rodents are not particularly effective for trapping bed bugs.
Hi A., I really hope mosquitos are the problem. My kids and I were waking up with what I thought were mosquito bites too. Then we went to the beach for a week and were still getting them. Finally we went to the doctor and it turns out we had a staph infection (mrsa). Hopefully, this isn't what you have but wanted to throw it out there just in case. You'll need an antibiotic to clear it all up. Good luck!

It's Arbonne RE9 body care. i do sell this, but even if i did not i would share this with you. its the best stuff you can get i promise. and, it will last you for months.

Put repellant on them before they go to bed, they have the kind that doesn't have deet, if you are not wanting to put a repellant on them with that. See if there is some standing water outside their room that could be drawing mesquitos, spray their screens on the window. You can buy mesquito nets, drape them over their beds.
Also it occured to me unless you see a lot of mesquitos that it may be bedbugs. I know a person doesn't want to think they have them, but a mattress can get infected from somewhere, and then make whoever sleeps on it bit all night. There is a site on the computer to tell if you have them by how you check the mattress. Don't be embarresed some real clean neat people can get them.

A., this seriously cannot be mosquitoes. It must be something else. Chiggers, bedbugs, spiders, SOMETHING. You need to have your home checked out. At the very least, put your two kids - the ones who are being bitten - in sleeping bags in your room for a few nights and see if that makes a difference. I bet it will. But do NOT put them in your bed, in case they might bring bugs into your own bed.
I know this may seem overwhelming, but don't try to stress too much. It could be much worse. Lice sucks.

Do you have a yard? Have you treated it for insects? If they are in the yard, they will come in when any door is opened to go thru. Spraying the house works in part but not in full whitout including the yard. If you can, find a citronella candle or even insence your family likes and burn it in the room. Mosquitos hate any smoke. The candle also has the citronella boost. It will take a bit to adjust to the smell in small area, it will chase the bloodsuckers out of the room.
For the yard, you can do wet insecticide as well as dry. The dry will last longer as it breaks down and goes to work. Get the hole yard. A spray/wet insecticide will work, have to close windows as it dries.
Lowe's has a good selection. Triazicide is good as is Bayer
brand.
Also sounds like standing water on one side of house as apposed as to the other. Check your screens for damage.

Try:
Vitamin E, taken orally (my mother in law used this with my sister in law since she is also allelrgic and was biten terribly as a child and she said it worked) Talk to your pedi about a safe dose.
I tore apart their room to find a source... why were they only in my sons' room? I found a big hole in their window screen. But I also took their mattress off and looked under the bed.
A mosquito net over their beds.. this helped with the bites but caused some drama when they tried to get up in the middle of the night.
Lastly, I found, at walmart, some natural aftr bite. I have yet to use it but it is an option for those current bites.

You didn't say if you were spraying your kids with mosquito repellant or not. Spraying them lightly at bedtime will not hurt. I have noticed an increase BIG time with mosquitos in my area as well and they're really big ones. We just assume it's change in the weather. My kids never get eaten up by them but they seem to fly straight in our door as soon as it's opened so I started spraying my front door daily with mosquito killer and it "seems" to help temporarily.
Also, use Hair Spray for the itching and bites. It always stops the itch! Just a good ole trick I learned years ago from another mama!

I have 2 products for you. First is one of our mists out of our aromatherapy line. This repels mosquitos and also smells very good. Second we have a diaper rash cream from our baby line. I know that sounds crazy. If your kids have been bitten and you put this on it will stop the itching. This is also good for eczema, hives, rashes of any sort or anything that itches.
In addition to helping with this the products are botanically based, ph correct, hypoallergenic, dermatologist tested (the baby line is peditrician tested), never tested on animals, no animal products or by-products and has no miineral oil in it. Every ingredient in every product is pure, safe and benefical.
If you'd like more information please let me know.

The same thing happened to us, but I finally figured out that it wasn't mosquito's. Unless you actually see mosquito's in their rooms, my hunch is that there are tiny (teeny tiny) spiders in the room that will bite during the night which is what we finally discovered. If that's the case, you'll need to pull all furniture away from the walls, and vacuum well along the baseboards. I would also wash all bedding and look at the bottom side of the furniture as well for spider webs (just tiny ones). You may also want to really look hard at the mattress to make sure you don't have bed bugs...just in case.

An old country way to catch & also to see if you have them is to put a lamp down on the floor, like 6 to 8 inches up & place a small bowl of water under it fleas will jump in if you have them. Then you'll know. You can also walk around or set with white sox on & you'll see them jump on. With your little ones legs being eaten up I think it would be worth trying. You don't have to have an indoor pet, they are in sand too. Hope that helps.
They have pet carpet fresh that kills fleas & also a spray foam that works well.
