Flat Feet - Fort Worth,TX

My 5 year old son has flat feet the Dr wants us to try shoes with a good arch. I hate to spend so much on a pair of tennis shoes or sandles that he will grow out of or be torn up in a couple of months. He is very rough on his shoes. I am needing any suggestions or advise on flat feet. I am not cheap but on a tight budget.

What can I do next?

When I was that age, I had custom-made arch supports. Now I just use Dr. Scholl's but then I'm not growing. I've heard there's a place in the Preston and Royal area of Dallas that can do the custom-made supports. May be a good investment because they can be worn in any pair of closed shoes, but of course will be outgrown periodically.

Hi there! My husband works at New Balance, and he told me to tell you that the New Balance KJ769ST and then depending on the size of the shoe there will be a P or a G after the ST will be good for him. If you go to a New Balance store they can measure him up and help you out! Also, their shoes hold up really well!!

Hey, K....

I know it's more expensive, but good shoes for flat-footed kids are essential. I have flat feet, too, and I've spent $100 on good shoes. Granted, that was last year, but maybe you could try the arch supports for now, which fit into any shoes (as another poster suggested). Just keep in mind, though, that they may not necessarily fit comfortably into every shoe. So, still have your son try shoes on WITH the arch support. (When I was a kid, my arch supports were from my doctor.)

You could also try Kid-to-Kid consignment for good shoes or Ross (they even have Sketchers for like $12-20 for kids.) So, they are affordable, stylish, and comfortable. You may want to also talk to the store about their return policy with their shoes and explain the situation. I have certain brands that I love and look for when shopping for shoes, because I know they will be comfortable and have good support. So, maybe you could ask your dr. for some recommendations for brands.

I know it must be tough to be making this decision with the economy and a child with feet that grow quickly.

However, this would fall into the Health category at our house and we never skimp on safety or health.

Get some recommendations of shoe brands from the Dr. and buy him a pair of shoes. I think the arch idea is a good one as well. Of course you would have to try different shoes to find out which is more comfy.

I say this because I have had to deal with bad feet most of my life and in the past 2 weeks I have spent over $600 (and I am insured) on new custom inserts for my shoes, having my feet taped weekly and physical therapy.

What if.....my mother knew (I don't know if she knew or not) I had a problem and fixed it when I was a kid. I would be more grateful because right now it is very painful.

Good luck
