Need a Good Athletic Shoe for My (Almost) 8-Yr.-Old Son

My son is very tall and thin with long, narrow, FLAT feet! He complains with almost every shoe that his legs hurt, which I've read and been told by my pediatrician is most likely the result of lack of good arch support. The only shoes that haven't given him trouble are from Stride Rite, but it's hard to find shoes in his size at our local store. I was thinking of shopping online for better selection (not just at Stride Rite). Does anyone have any suggestions for brands that offer great arch support in a boys' youth sized shoe?

What can I do next?

My dad has a very flat foot and a hard to fit size. One day he went inside a New Balance store and was fitted to a shoe that he LOVES. He won't wear anything else and it made a big difference in his legs/feet. They are great to order them for him if they are not in stock for his size.

Nike has a "playground" shoe, that is made specificly for kids growing feet. My daughter overpronates as well. Overpronation is just a fancy way of saying she's got flat feet. And these shoes work well for her. I've found this shoe at Acadamy

Have you tried arch supports for in his shoes?
Also, I would have him measured by Stride Rite. They can order any shoe in any size for you. It takes about a week and if they don't fit, you don't have to buy them.
I have some problems with my feet and I have heard that New balance are great. I am wearing Merrells right now which I love.

You can also get good arch supports from a pediatric physical therapist. Sometimes insurance will cover them from a PT but not a podiatrist or vice versa. I would recommend having a good pediatric PT look at his feet. They may have other recommendations as well. Sometimes tight muscles in the calf can contribute to flat feet, or you can see knee problems as well. There is a company called cascade (www.dafo.com) that has both custom and off-the-shelf arch supports that are fabulous. You can call and talk to a PT who orders these and find out more information.

They have child sizes, too.

New Balance shoes are great. I wear them and my 8 year old son has a pair also. My mother who has arthritis wears them also. There is a new balance store in Edmond or you can find them at famous footwear, kohls or online.

My husband has the same problem as your son. He has the best success with New Balance tennis shoes. I know they make them for kids. The other good thing is that NB shoes are very durable. We buy them for my son because they are the only shoes that he actually outgrows before they fall apart.

Have you been to a podiatrist to see if orthotics are advisable? My sisters and I had them from the time we were about 3 years-old. I have to wear them as an adult to help with my flat feet/arthritis. Therefore, the shoe isn't as important as the orthotic (though our podiatrist is specific that we should use a non-stability shoe to allow the orthotic to work correctly).

You can make a quick call to your insurance to see how they cover the cost of the visit to a podiatrist (because they're recognized by the American Medical Association, it should be a covered expense) and the orthotics.

As someone with bad feet, they've been my saving grace for a few years. I had my first foot surgery at 19.

The best shoes for running in general are usually Saucony, New Balance, Nike, etc. All are available in kids sizes (though you may need to go to a higher-end department store or specialty kids shoe store). We bought our son a pair of New Balance (he's 3.5 and wears a 10.5 shoe) for $40 at Von Maur.
