Fixing Daughter's Hair

Both of my daughters would not tolerate having their hair done at that age either. I took them to a kids salon and had bangs cut to keep the hair out of their eyes. Once they were older, I let the bangs grow out and now I style their hair every day. (they're 8 and 4 now)

Not worth the struggle and aggravation - just give her bangs for now.

I cut my daughters hair myself. I do a little over a few days. bangs, sides, back. usually I just pull the hair up and cut it off her skin. Her hair is wavey, so, it doesn't matter it is perfect. plus, the back of her head has thick hair, and the front is thin. Somedays she is more coopertive than others.

I've been cutting my daughter's hair since she was a baby. She has always had so much hair and it gets in her eyes. She's an active girl and I hate to think of her struggling with hair in her eyes all day. Also she won't let me put clips in her hair. You just have to be quick when you are cutting. Don't make a "style", just cut the hair out of her eyes. She will probably stand still for five or ten seconds if you ask her to look at something. Then just quickly snip big pieces. You can't get the whole cut done at once, you pretty much get in a snip at a time. But you will feel so much better when she has all that hair out of her eyes and you don't have to fuss with clips.

On keeping hair out of eyes...don't forget headbands!! Swoop, and on. And strapped in the carseat is a fantastic place for clipping bang barretts, or the highchair for ponytails. There's a little bit of a learning curve for brushing hair into a ponytail on someone who's eating/moving their head around, but by the time she's two you'll be able to do it while she's dancing and you're talking on the phone with your haed gluing the phone to your shoulder, and you won't even notice.

On getting hair cut:

There are places that specialize in cutting kid's hair, that are soooo used to moving heads and how to cut hair in both while the head is moving and in the little pauses between movements. They usually have trains/boats/airplanes with seatbelts instead of chairs...and lap boxes of toys for them to play with...ranging from baby toys to superheros.

We couldn't afford them when my son was little, so I cut his hair myself, and it took me apx half an hour since I'm sooo not a professional. From 1 to 1.5 I could just set him on the bathroom counter and his reflection kept him occupied for more than long enough. From 1.5-2, I put shaving cream on the mirror, and he played/drew happily there for the length of time I needed. From 2-3 I just spread out a towel in front of the TV...and from 3 on I've taken him to a kid's salon to get his hair cut (yay! can afford the 20 bucks once every 4 months now!...my son has always wanted long hair, but it does the agustus type curl...and longer than 3 inches it tangles like crazy, and he'd rather cut it than brush/comb it...so we go through cycles of cut short and growing out that crack me up. He is soooo particular about his hair).

I'm lucky that one of the teachers at my daughter's daycare loves doing hair, so she was the one to perform the first pony tails.

I think her secret is having special toys that only come out while the girls hair is being done. She also sprays a little water to make the hair easier to work with, to gather for a pony tail. There are tiny rubber bands available at drug stores.

I did not cut my daughter's hair. She is also very active, so I try to distract her by sitting her down with a toy in front of her. She still moves her head around but at least sitting in one place. I also let her pick which color pony or barrettes so she has more buy-in

i did my daughters hair since she was 4 months. then as soon as she could sit on he sink (about 5-6 months) id sit her infront of our mirror and do her hair. you have to be quick when they are that age becuase at 16 months they like to go go go. just keep it up every morning as part of your rutine. with my daughte she wakes eats breakfast then gets a bath and dressed and then gets her teeth brushed and her hair combed and done. as far as cuttig her hair tr finding a child friendly salon where they specialize in little ones that move. my daughter is 30 months and just got her first hair cut. we went to fantastic sams and she sat on my lap while they cut her hair it wok about 10 mins. also look up cool cuts for kids they are a great kids salon :) good luck

I just have to tell you, you're not alone. My first child is a boy (well, man-cub at this point). Hair care with boys, very simple. With girls... for me?... not so much. Everyone in our family has curly hair, too.

With my daughter (17 months), I often get her hair wet and then do one or two little palm tree looking pigtails up on top of her head. Although Grandma can get straight parts, I mainly go for getting the hair out of her eyes. Honestly, she looks cute either way.

As for when to cut her hair, I think it's up to you. Some cultures actually shave their baby's heads. There will always be those girls who get their first haircut as a pre-teen. Most of us fall somewhere in the middle.

I would sit my daughter in the kitchen sink and let her play with the water while I did her hair. I wanted her hair to grow out so I didn't cut her hair but my boys got their first haircut at 10 to 12 months. I used the kitchen sink with them as well. They are preoccupied with the water and don't move much thus making it easier to work with their hair.

I have the exact same problem, everyone says cut her hair.The problem w/ that is in a yr or 2 parents are always wanting to grow it out agian.My daughter always pulls hairties,clips,everything out, the best thing to use is those little ouchless clear (dime size)hairties kinda like the ones used for braces but bigger. Target has them they stay in all day long, you can do lil pig tails, pony tail.Love them cuz they stay in and she can not pull them out and people can actually see my babys cute little face...hehehe I always felt so bad that her hair was always in her face.. I took my soon for his first hair cut around your daughters age, he is very active and very strong so I was worried but I did take him to a professional kiddo place. Little Kutz in La Verne, there is also one in Pasadena, they gave a first hair cut certificate and bagged a piece of his hair. On wensday's it's $16 but normally it's $18, oh I definitely would ask for Marie.

My thoughts exactly. Until my daughter turned 2, she wouldn't let me near her hair other than to brush it once a day. The only person she would let do cute "dos" to her hair is the lady that cuts her hair. At age 1 we started taking my daughter to Chloe's Carousel in Rancho Bernardo. Her stylist is Lisa. Lisa was the only one who could put cute bows or pigtails in my daughters hair. Of course Miss Lisa was armed with lollipops and Dora videos :).

Now I just sit her in front of the TV while I do her hair. Usually a couple of half pig tails, a pony tail, or just a couple of clippies in her hair. Nothing too complicated. I also use a detangler spray. We just get her bangs cut and the length of her hair trimmed to keep things simple and out of her eyes.

I was going to mention about the children's hair cutting salons but the other moms have it covered. I did want to mention that some salons have a first hair cut thing where they save some of the first hair cut.

If you are not ready for a full hair cut, maybe just go in for a bang trim. That is mostly what we did with my daughter when she was little.

I had a similar issue when my daughter was younger. I would sit her in the sink and let her touch whatever she wanted. She could watch herself in the mirror and it would occupy her long enough to do her hair.

We cut my daughter's hair when she was 1 year old... she loved it! We took her to a "kiddie" place to cut her hair. They know how to handle little kids.

If not, and you do it yourself, you will probably need 2 people... one to hold her in his/her lap, and you cut say the bangs. That is also what we did when my daughter was little... and for my son who is now 3 years old and HATES to cut his hair.

The main thing is to distract them with something... even if in front of a tv. Which is what the Kiddie salon does, where we went. And, watch their hand/arms... because they may try to swat you or yank away... or flail their arms.

If not, then you just try to make due... and not cut her hair until you feel comfortable with it, and she.

If she pulls her hair clips out, then just don't use it. She will probably yank them out at daycare too....and then it can become a choking hazard for her or other little kids/babies who are around. Many kids yank out their hair accessories... So... you can just let her hair grow, which is what many Moms do too. Until they get to an age where cutting hair is not so difficult.

Or sometimes what we do, with our son, is we cut his hair while he is in the tub. Note: I said "WE cut his hair" ... meaning I do not do it by myself... my Hubby helps me. He is in the tub holding our son, and I am on the sidelines of the tub, cutting. And then we shower off.

Find a kids hair cutting salon (like Rainbow) and destress yourself. These hair dressers KNOW how to get squirmy kids bangs cut without cutting the kid! It is ever so worth the few $$$$! They have toys there to distract the kids as well. My daughter would never let me put anything in her hair so bangs were the only solution. LL

I suggest that you trim her bang a bit, but let the rest of her hair grow out. You could take her to kiddie salon, but they usually are more expensive than regular ones. I think that if you get one of those layer trimming scissors, you could do the bang yourself.. When she first falls asleep, or sometimes I just put mine on our back yard (no clean up!).

wait til she falls asleep (sitting up in the car seat is best) and give her bangs a little trim. It took two sessions for me (the first time I didn't do the best job I realized later!) you'll be surprised how cute she looks. If you really mess it up you can take her to a kids salon.
