Feel Really Bad About This

Ok moms, I feel really bad about this and have no clue how this happened. My son who just turn 4 last week who also has PDD-NOS has been complaining of back pain and stomach pain. I took him to the doctor yesterday and found out that he had swollowed between 19-20 mancala game marbles. Well I feel like a bad mother, besides that, I am worried about the fact that they are glass and I can not find any information on the web about whether or not they contain lead. We did an enema last night and got 10 out, and will try again today for more, but I don't know if I should be pushing the peditrian for more answers/labwork or just continute the planned course of action and follow up next week with another x-ray and labwork then??? I got the impression that she had not come across a child eating marbles before (other things, just not marbles)and I guess not so many. Any advise (other than throwing out ALL small objects/toys, trust me already did that)...

What can I do next?

These marbles are round with no sharp edges so that's good. How did the 10 marbles you were able to retrieve look? Did they look discolored or did they look about the same as they did when they went in? If they are discolored then whatever the coating was it probably was absorbed by his body. Hopefully they don't contain any lead. I think they should pass through his sysytem like every thing else he eats since the marbles are not shaped in a way that they can get lodged I don't think. Hopefully by the time you read this he will have passed the rest of the marbles with or with the enema.

My daughter put a bead up her nose once and I couldn't get it out. The Dr. ended up extracting it. It was scary for me and her, so I know how you feel.

I couldn't find much out about lead in marbles myself. But honestly, I think he'll be fine. Making sure he has passed all of them is the most important thing!

Good luck!

I know what you mean about feeling guilty. Several years ago my son was complaining about a sore throat at night. He has allergies and he never complained about it during the day so I figured it was drainage from his allergies. After about 2 weeks I took him to the doctor trying to get a better allergy medicine. It was Strep!! I felt so bad that he had had strep for 2 weeks!

As for the marbles, I agree witht he others. They are round and should pass easily.

www.landofmarbles.com or www.marblespot.com They might be able to answer your question about the composition.

Personally I'd stay the course of action you're on now. Except for the guilt part. On that you'll have to take a number and wait your turn. Too many of us have already "been there, done that". Guilt is such an overrated emotion, so please don't give it any more of your energy. And remember, since you'll probably laugh about this in 5 years, why wait........Go make a great day.

You are not a bad Mom. No matter how close we watch them they seem to find something to stick in the mouth and sometimes swallow. Years ago when my daughter had just started walking we had just cleaned the toy room from top to bottom and siomehow she found a penny. I did not see her do it but her breathing was quite labored and I just had mothers intuition that she had tried to swallow something. Sure enough in the xray you could see the penny stuch sitting up so you could see it easily. Talk about feeling like a bad mother. We try so hard and we just don't truly have eyes in the back of our head so... I have had marbles come through one of my sons as well. You know you are a good Mom or you wouldn't have carted him off to the doctor. Give yourself a break and just know that you are doing a great job and we have to leave the rest in God,s hands...kids will be kids! Regardless of what the marbles may have in them getting them out is obviosly the priority. If you feel there are signs of anything toxic having been in them you can deal with the detox later. You could always do something just as a preventative. Do your research about how lead poisining presents itself and how to detox from it. I would probably give him something mild in nature like an Herb lax(a Shaklee product that we use) for whatever might be lerking in the digestive tract but things absorb quickly so the detox product might be better for your peace of mind. I wouldn't think he would need to take anything for very long and well...you know he can swallow so... This will be one of those stories you talk about with him for years to come. Two of our sons are married and grown and when they come home and see what non sense our current toddlers are getting into we remind them of all the things they did and how they all scared us to death at times. These are the events in life that bond a family together!

Sincerely,
K. B

Hi M.. Don't feel bad, because my 6 yr old swallowed a magnitex ball. They are the size of a marbel and it's metal. He was able to pass it of his system. Now I'm not a Doc. so don't quote me on this, but I think as long as he is able to pass these out in his stool, I think he will be ok. If they haven't all come out and he is still
complaining, then I would take further action with going to the Doc. or at least calling the Doc office and telling them he's not been able to get them all out despite your efforts. Also for maybe your own peace of mind on the possible lead issue, you can request that he be tested for it......As far as the rest of the marbels are concerned; I would expalin to him that these are not food and only for playing with and since you can't keep them out of your mouth, Mom will have to take them away from you for awhile. Unfortunatly though we can't always be there every single minute of the day watching over them. We can only teach them right from wrong and hope that what we say will sink in. Just as long as we take precaution on the big things that will hurt them(ie..poisons, knives, ect).
Good luck! Hopfully he'll be able to get them all out.

Hi M.,

I agree 100% with Karen. There is nothing you can do now about him swallowing these marbles. (My daughter swallowed the lead ball bearing from Mouse Trap!) A intestinal and a body detox is what you need to do to prevent problems down the road. Most issues come with the BUILDING UP of toxins and the ABSORPTION in the intestinal tract. If you do a detox now, you're preventing problems down the road that may or may not have to do with these marbles.

You've heard of tea tree oil? The reason the melaleuca alternifolia tree was called the tea tree is because the aboriginals drank the tea from the leaf to stay healthy. It was their detox. 4 glasses a day for two weeks would do a total body detox for him and if you want to cleanse the colon, I can give you some suggestions as well.

Lead, mercury and other heavy metals have to be removed from the system; they don't just come out on their own. But these days, you have gentler options than there were we were kids!

God bless!

Please don't feel bad. Even the best behaved kids swallow something during their first few years. I do agree to do a detox. That's good anytime and right now it will give you a little assurance that you are doing all you can. Since he has PDD-NOS I would keep those things under lock and key and get rid of the dangerous chemicals in the house. That will also give you some reassurance that it won't happen again. It will probably help his diagnosis as well.

The marbles are smooth and round, so should pass eventually without complications. Sounds like your doctor is following the right course of action. As long as these marbles are not magnetic at all, he should be fine. If they were magnets -- that would be very serious and require surgery immediately.

Good Morning M....

If it were me...I'd insist on getting him tested for toxicity and lead poisoning. My husband is with MetaMetrix Labs in Duluth...a full clinical lab and a research lab for alternative testing...this sort of testing is their specialty. You might think of calling them...stating you situation and ask for advice. They will be glad to talk with you...be sure to tell them that I referred you to them. If you get a new receptionist who doesn't seem to respond(highly doubt that :)) then tell them that I am Dr. Richard Lord's wife. He may not be the one to talk with and may not be there, but there are plenty of folks who would qualify. This process will require an order from your doctor.

My husband has been with the lab for over 20 years take a look: http://www.metametrix.com/content/AboutMetametrix/AboutUs... .

Hope this helps...praying for you and yours as I close...G.
