On Monday, January 14, 2007 around 11pm, my daughter swallowed a pebble (i called it that) that is the size of a penny but a bit thicker. I was cleaning when that happened. She just turned 4 yrs. old. She screamed for me and told me what happened. I thought it was something really tiny until I asked her what it was and she showed me. At first, I tried to make her cough it out, then puke it out. I felt so horrible because she was crying too. I didn't know what else to do but fed her some oatmeal and rice to push it down hoping that she'll have a bowel movement soon to push it out. She's been having bowel movements, but I don't see that pebble that she swallowed. I feel horrible, like an unfit mother. I'm thinking of taking her in for an x-ray because I'm getting really worried. What should I do? Will it come out soon? Should I give her some Little Tummy Laxative or Castor Oil to help her have more bowel movements? Will she need surgery? I am very new at this and don't know what else to do. Do I need to take her in to see her doctor and get some x-rays done? I'm afraid that it might be stuck somewhere in her stomach. Please give me some advice and what is best to do. Thanks in advance for your responses.

So What Happened?

I haven't taken her in yet but is planning to this week. Our insurance changed so I have to get her a new doctor. I was able to talk to a nurse from her old one and they told me pretty much the same things that everyone has told me so far. I'm not sure if she already passed it through, because when i am home with her, i checked, but did not see anything yet, or maybe i missed it without knowing. I don't know if her uncles checked on her when she had a bowel movement when they are watching her. My husband said he did not see it either. I asked her everyday when i see her (morning, noon, and night) does your tummy hurt? Do you need to go potty? etc. etc. etc. Just for my peace of mind, i'm planning on taking her in, especially for my husband's peace of mind. I will update everyone on the process. thanks for all your responses.

Isn't it amazing what kids will swallow?? LOL I wouldn't panick yet unless it starts to give her pain. If it does then take her to get an xray. If it's the size you say it is, then she should have no trouble passing it.

Honey, if she didn't poop it out by now she should be x rayed. Do NOT give her a laxative, she needs a solid bowel movement to move it out. The hosp. will tell You what to do next.

Don't panic....it's best to call your child's doctor and see what he/she says. But one of my daycare kids swallowed a quarter (he was five)and it passed about a week later. But talk your doctor, he/she will tell you the best course of action. Don't give any laxitives or anything until you talk to the doctor. But as long as the object isn't sharp in any way, your daughter should be just fine.

call your doctor and see what he recommends...anything that size could cause a blockage in her digestive track....probably in the small intestine.....some parts of the intestines are as small around as your finger....especially in a small child....

i'm guessing all this excitement etc will make sure your daughter never swallows anything like this again!!

keep telling yourself "if this is the worst thing that ever happens to her, we're lucky!!"....you're not a terrible mother....these things just happen when you have kids (a cousin of mine shoved a piece of candy corn way up inside his nose!!)....it's how you take care if it that matters....

If it gets past the throat okay (which it did since she can swallow and breathe), then your intestines are very flexible and it should work itself out in 3 to 7 days in a bowel movement. I have been through this with my daughter. "Kids swallow so much stuff," the doctors tell me.

I would air on the cautios side and take her in. That being said the doctor may or may not do xrays. I worked in xray and most things that are xrayed for are if they are large and irregular shaped if it is small and round or oval they might not do an xray. The thinking is to not subject a child to unneeded radiation. My daughter has thankfully never swallowed anything but I have many neices and nephews and have experienced with them. most things do pass, but again you can never be to careful when it comes to your kids!!

When my daughter was the same age she swallowed a dime. It took almost a week for it to re appear. You may want to call her doctor and see if you can get an xray done just to be sure of where it is. Just keep checking her BMs and it will come out. If possible, ask your doctor for a half hat. Its what you put in the toilet to measure urine output, but it makes it alot easier to catch the BMs. Get some gloves, too. I had to physically go through Savannahs BMs every time to find the dime, and I still almost missed it.

Oh I should not laugh but my 4 year old did something very similar at pre-school. We were at the school christmas program and my little Gracie was crying when I got there. The teacher made her finish out the program and then brought her to me and said she did not know what the problem was, maybe just tired. So Gracie and I sat together at the table eating our christmas cookies and finally she stopped sobbing and said to me "Mommy, I have to tell you something". She prodeeded to tell me that while making a neclace for me for christmas she had put a bead in her mouth to hold it and accidentally swallowed it. She looked horrified! I was giggling and had to work very hard not to bust out but I did ok. I proceeded to tell her that the beed would work its way through her pipes and would come out the other end. She was worried because her older brother has those Magnetics that have been recalled because of swallowing dangers. I told the kids that they could actually loose their life if they were to swallow one. Gracie's bead came out the other end by the next day and all has been well since. Gracie did however experience a headache and tummy ache that same day, I imagine from the stress of thinking she would die.

I think the pepple should come out on its own but I did call my physician just to be sure about it. What is it about 4 year olds and putting things in their mouth? I thought that was over at 3? Huh! You never know do you.

Good luck and don't worry too much, it will drive you crazy. Our little ones are very tough!

DO Not give her a laxative or try to make her vomit! Not a good idea. Call the doctor or a nurse help line and ask if you need to take her in. Honestly, I wouldn't be that worried, kids swallow weird stuff all the time, she'll probably be fine, and you're not a horrible unfit mother.

These things do have a way of working themselves out, and a piece as large and dense as what you've described can take some extra time. If your daughter is in any kind of discomfort, take her in. Otherwise, give her another day to work things out on her own. Rather than oatmeal and rice, I would try some stool-loosening things such as grapes, apples and my grandfather's favorite: prunes. It will make it easier to spot when it's out and move things along in her intestines quite nicely.

Don't feel like an unfit mother! Kids are kids and they are SOOOO curious about everything. My mother didn't even know I'd swallowed things until it showed up in my diaper (including a safety pin, once!!) Call your pediatrician for more advice (it's free to call and can give you LOTS of peace of mind).

I know that it is scary when your child swallows someithing they aren't supposed to. Don't worry the pebble will pass. Just keep an eye out for it in the stools, but it also might not show directly. Unless some other symptoms show up in your child there is no need to worry. Take a deep breath and don't feel like you are unfit. Kids do things that we can't explain or prevent even when we try our hardest to protect them from anything harmful.

A few months ago my 3 year old daughter swallowed a button cell battery. I was worried about it leaking so I took her to the E.R. for confimation as I did not even see her with the battery. She was telling the truth and the battery showed up in the x-ray. The Dr said that it would pass on it's own and to watch for it. I never saw it but when we went back to the E.r for a follow up the x-ray showed that it was gone.
I wouldn't worry.

I would call your Dr. at least for piece of mind and I also wouldn't start laxatives or anything like that without his consent. I have worked as an x-ray tech for 15 years. Getting an x-ray would probably not be all that helpful since usually only metallic objects show up on x-ray. X-ray would show you a bowel obstruction but by that time your child should have symptoms such as pain, nausea, vomitting. Check with your dr. but most likely it will pass with no problems.

I wouldn't worry unless it was magnetic. my son swallowed a metal marble when he was two and it just came out with a bowel movement. It was gross because it wouldn't flush down the toilet. It separated from the "stuff it was in" and just sat at the bottom of the toilet. I had to fish it out. :) She will be okay unless she complains of a tummy ache and then I would call your doctor.

My son swallowed a penny last year (God only knows why, but whatever). When I called the ER they told me not to give him anything to eat, because if it obstructed his esophagus he could choke on whatever he ate. I took him to the ER and they gave him orange sodapop. They said the carbonation will expand the esophagus and the penny would then drop into his stomach. After that, it would pass on it's own. I never saw it, but after a week I just stopped worrying about it.

I wouldn't use laxatives. If she's not complaining of pain or isn't getting sick she'll be fine. Call your doctor for some piece of mind, or if something starts seeming off, but other than that, she should be fine.

I think she'll be fine...and that it will pass on it's own. Call the doc just to make them aware of the situation, they will give you a time frame and perhaps some pointers on getting it to happen quickly. Keep an eye out for discomfort, lack of BM, distended abdomen, vomiting, fever, lethargy, etc. which could be the first signs of an obstruction. You'd be surprised what our bodies can handle...after all, look what your body pushed out! LOL

Hi there,
You are not an unfit mother...children swallow things all of the time. YOu are just lucky that she didn't swallow something with sharp edges. Now, here comes the semi-gross part...have you been examining her bowel movements "closely", as in actually putting on rubber gloves and sifting through them? If not, she could have passed it without you even realizing it. As long as she is eating and drinking normally, having regular bowel movements, and not in any pain, she should be fine. I would call your regular care doctor and ask to speak with a nurse. Explain what happened and see if the doctor would like x-ray's. Chances are, the doctor will not be overly concerned. If you are super worried you could probably tell them and ask them to order x-rays. As far as the rest of your questions, it should come out soon, do NOT NOT NOT give her laxatives or castor oil, the only way she would need surgery is if her bowel became obstructed or something else REALLY rare like that. Children are capable of passing all kinds, and sizes, of things...you'd be suprised.

When I was 6 or so (in kindergarten), I was playing with a penny and swallowed it. It did get a little stuck in my throat but not that I couldn't breath and I did swallow it. I remember my mom taking me to the doctor and there wasn't really anything they could do but wait for it to pass. Truthfully, I don't think I ever saw or felt it pass. No one every really worried to much about it and I turned out ok. I would not recommend laxative and I doubt she'll need surgery. It will pass but you may not even see it. It may have already passed.

Y., PLEASE SEE THE DOCTOR!
Here is a story I know, for real:
there was a boy, he was 5. He wanted to know how those intestines in his tummy work, as he was recently informed about their existence (the intestines go round around, like a looooong tube inside the tummy, where food goes through.
So, he did not find anything better than swallow a quarter. I'm not kidding! He told me this story when he was already 50!
He drank water and wanted to FEEL how the quarter will be moving through his intestines. He sure did feel it, the thing did go through and reappeared from the other side the second day. Nothing bad happened, but it hurt.

Now, pebble is thicker, it is more dangerous I'd think, as it has that weight and space to take, what if it gets stuck someplace. If your girl does not complain that it hurts anywhere, I'd take her to x-rays, and see what's going on.

I hope everything will be good, please take care!!!

First you are NOT a bad mom, at one time or another most little ones swallow something, if I had to list all of the stuff one of my kids ate in thier early years you would be amazed, we can't be everywhere all the time, heck my 14 year old swallowed a dime last week because she had it in her mouth....gross, my 16 month old swalled a penny 2 weeks ago, apperantly I need to keep an eye on spare change lol. Almost always these things just come out on there own, it can take one to two weeks, if your daughter isn't feeling any discomfort I wouldn't stress to much, I would however call the dr just to let them know what happened, they will probably tell you to wait but at least you are keeping them in the loop. Good luck, she will be fine.

I worked in a pediatrician's office for 5 years and this was our policy. Anything larger than a quarter needs immediate attention from a x-ray. If smaller than a quarter, We would have them drink some water and some bread to make sure it's not stuck in the esophagus. If all goes well, it has made it into the stomach and will pass through a bowel movement. This can take up to 2 weeks. If you have not seen it in the stool after 2 weeks, or if she complains of stomach pain or constipation, call the doctor and they will order an X ray to see if it has passed or whether it's still there. I hope this helps!

My niece did the same thing but she swallowed a marble and she is 9 years old. The thing about a marble is that some are made of magnets which are bad for you and need to be removed right away. The Dr. told my sister to watch her stool and go through it every time she goes #2. So every time Makayla went #2 she had to go into a plastic bag and my sister had to go through it to see if the marble was in there. So that is what your going ot have to do also. It may take a couple days for it to come out but it will. If you feel better call the Dr. and see what they say Im sure they will have you go through her poop and look for it to make sure she passes it. Its gross but you have to do it. Dont worry it will come out but just make sure you look for it!
