I am currently 30 weeks 4 days pregnant with baby #3, 27 years old and Married for 8 1/2 years. I am wanting a permanant birth control after baby is born. My dr recommends Essure. I googled it tonight and found a lot of people who had problems with it. So i am now considering having my tubes tied instead. I had Mirena in about 3 years ago and had many problems with that, so I worry about problems with the Essure. Have any of you had Essure? Did you have problems with it? What would you all recommend? Im thinking having my tubes tied will be longer down time in the beginning, but less problems in the long run?! What are your thoughts?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for you answers!! I have decided against getting Essure...there are risks to everything in life and Im choosing to not have a foreign object in my body that does not belong there. My Dr burns the tubes and pulls part of them out, so no foreign objects in there with that procedure! I strongly believe this is the right decision for me. Someone asked "what if something happened to your husband, would you want kids with a future mate?" My answer is No! I am very happy with 3 kids, I never saw myself having anymore than 3. Plus, with as difficult as my pregnancies are, I dont want to risk anything. (With my 2nd I was on bedrest all but weeks 12-19. Week 19 they found low amniotic fluid, week 28 was toxemia/pre-eclampsia, almost delivered at 32 weeks, ended up having her at 36 weeks 4 days.) This pregnancy I am developing Toxemia/pre-eclampsia and I am 33 weeks today, so its safer for me to be done all together!
Thank You all again for all of your answers!!

This is my answer from a post about a month ago - I just updated it.

I had a tubal last year about a day & a half after my 2nd was born. I did not get an epidural for the delivery (though I wanted it, no time), so they did a spinal for the surgery. Took about 15min, then recovery time in the recovery room. They would have left the epidural in place for it if I'd had one for the delivery. I really havent' had any problems. I breastfed so I didn't get my period back for a year. I've only had 3 since then (DS is 16mo) and they were normal like they always were. Sometimes I do get sharp pains on one side or the other, but it may also be ovarian cysts as I have PCOS. No other side effects. Since you are pregnant now, it is easier for them to do it soon after delivery (or while there in there if you have a c-section) because they can get to the tubes easier. My recovery was pretty easy. I had surgical pain for about 3-4days (took percocet) and then it was just incision pain for about a week or so longer. My incision is at the bottom of my belly button, so it's not noticable. And she placed clamps on the tubes which I think is what they are doing now instead of tying them off something. And the downtime for a tubal is not that bad - I still did most things, just had to take it easy for a couple weeks which you'd do anyway after giving birth ;)
I know people talk about hormonal imbalances & issues with tubals, but couldn't Essure cause the same problems since it is essentially the same thing - blocking the tubes. Just a thought. I've still had no issues since having my tubal and no regrets about having it done.

There is no long-term information on this, but my gut says "STAY AWAY!"

The way this works is that it basically causes your body to create scar tissue around a "bottle brush" type deally that is put into your fallopian tubes.

It can't be removed without surgery, so if your body rejects it...you're screwed.

I'm so glad my Guy has had a vasectomy!

I'd do the tubal.
My husband got a vasectomy, it was much simpler.
If yours isnt ready to not be reproductive anymore, then get yourself fixed.
I just think it's better when husband does it because it's less invasive.
They are up and back to normal the next day.
We arent.

There are a lot of problems with getting a tubal. Not everyone has them, but a lot of people do. If I were you I would look up Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome. Some people go so far as to have a reversal if they can. You can find info online. I don't know about the essure, but really it seems that they block the fallopian tubes so they would cause the same symptoms. I personally wouldn't do it if there were any other options.

I've heard of people who had tubal ligation and had problems. I don't know about the essure problems yet. I know a relative who has done it and no complications. It's outpatient, quick and easy and a step up from regular birth controls. I've had tubal and so far I have not had any problems, so it all depends on the person and the doctor who does it. I made sure my doctor double clipped mine.

I don't know anything about the Essure method. But I will tell what we had decided when our second child was getting close to being born. If had to have a c-section,then I would get my tubes tied.If not, then my hubby would get his tied.:)) I didn't have to have a c-section so a year after our son was born my hubby got the vasectomy.

good luck

I have been torn on this subject for a few years. I am too much of a scare-dey cat to do essure...... copper coils in my body....hmmmmm....
I am going to finally try being off the pill after 9 years and give my body a rest, use condoms and plan a tubal ligation. It has been around the longest and it can only be a better procedure over all. Down 2 days and a bit of discomfort. I hope I don't freak out and back out . LOL. My hubby won't consider him....so need to take it in my own hands. I am right there with you.............

I have planned on me getting fixed I want to be done having children regardless if it is with my husband now or in the future with someone else i'm a mom of 4 32 yrs & don't want anymore children the risk of me having more children out weighs the risk of something going wrong with the Essure if my body rejects if (unsure what complications your talking about no haven't googled it spoke to my midwife and urologist you can also call the 1800 to get more precise information from Essure I plan to do so next week) then hopefully my heart/artiriest won't need surgery it is the same metal they use for these surgeries.I have already spoken to my urologist way before I decided to have a 4th child yes I don't like the idea of me getting taken care of I have had 4 full term babies, delivered all naturally all healthy I don't want to risk having one that isn't or having a c section besides that hubby is going on 38 to me he is getting to old to have children and for myself don't want to be pregnat after 34 so this is the ideal time that my family is complete. We females do alot of work on conceiving and carrying our babies not to mention labor and delivery but i'm done with all of it and now a mother to 4

i got Essure done about 3 months ago. So not a long time ago but have had zero problems. I just got the test done yesterday to make sure everything worked out okay and it did! After the procedure it felt like I had a slightly worse than nomal period happening with the cramping but then totally back to normal the next day! I have heard it is easier for the woman know with the Essure or the Adiana. ( Essure has metal coils and the Adiana is like a little foam thing, but basically the same procedure).

I just responded to another question about Essure and I'm too lazy to re-type so here is that thread: http://www.mamapedia.com/questions/4349348095486787585.

I would do a search for Essure and tubal on here... there are a lot of people that have asked and a lot of answers. :-)

I am due any time now with #4 and was faced with the same decision. My doctor made it easy for me, as she will not do the Essure procedure. She said that so many women have to have Essure removed due to chronic pain, years into the procedure, that she will not perform it any more. I am scheduled to get my tubes tied in August.

Essure. It is so easy and not hard to do. Plus it can be tested to see if any dye gets past the devices. I think it is the best since it is more natural.

i think if YOU are done having kids it is your job to take care of the birth control. It is your body and your decision. What if something happened to him, would you want kids with a possible future mate? It the opposite happened would he? If you are done it's up to you in my opinion.

A friend of mine did Essure. I had planned on it too until I found out about all the issues related to it. I was scared of a Tubal. But I was terrified of the Essure. My friend had/is having issues from the Essure. I had a Tubal done 6 months ago. Not a single problem.

Essure is fantastic. The procedure was like a long pelvic exam. You are sedated so it is no big deal. I've never had any complications or issues. It's like it is not even there.
