just looking into a more permanent non-hormonal birth control for after our next baby is born...and just heard about coiling i think the commercial name is essure...tiny coils are placed in the fallopian tubes and once scar tissue forms (about 3 months) your pretty much sterile...has anyone used this procedure? is it painful? any side effects?

What can I do next?

I looked into this at one point and was warned against by my allergist. The coils are metal (a nickle mixture i believe) and people with metal allergies should avoid it. I already hae metal sensitivity but I was also cautioned that some people can build up metal allergies with prolonged exposure. Having the metal inserted would qualify for that. Just another factor to consider.

Never heard of it. Doesn't sound pleasant. Is your husband willing to get a vasectomy? Have you ever read the book, "Taking charge of your fertility"? It's all-natural and highly recommend it.

I had a tubal ligation after my second c-section. I've had horrible post-tubal ligation problems from it - heavy period bleeding, bloating, and a few other symptoms because I don't have the same blood flow through my fallopian tubes.
I'm not sure if coiling has the same ramifications, but I would advise you to look at all the information you can get your hands on.
I had bad side effects from taking birth control, but luckily all I had to do was stop taking it. Now I am stuck (I can't afford the 10,000 reversal surgery) with a horrible female cycle for the rest of my life. My doctor actually said I could get a hysterectomy with my insurance, but I'm only 32!

I did the procedure last July and it has worked great. It was painful when they put the coils in, but the whole procedure lasted only about 15 to 20 minutes. The prep was more scary than anything. I really don't have much of side effects except for maybe a little cramping at my period and sometimes in the middle (I am guessing ovulation)...nothing serious though.

Immediately after the procedure you are pretty much out of it, or at least I was I think mostly due to the xanax the dr. prescribed prior to the procedure. We went to dinner later in the day and the following day I was back to my regular routine. Hope this helps.

Hi,
I had the essure procedure done at western dupage obgyn. It was an in office procedure, I was awake for the whole thing. I had no side effects just a little bit of cramping and light bleeding. The worst part of the whole thing was all nerve related. I definately recomend it. After a few months you go back and have a die test done to make sure your tubes are blocked, that procedure wasn't that bad either. I would say to definately have the essure procedure done close to after you give birth, because if you have labor pains fresh in your mind the essure cramping will feel like nothing. Good luck.
Let me know if you have any more questions.

I had it done in August of '06. It's not an unbearable procedure. I did think it was more uncomfortable than the doctor said it would be, though. But the procedure itself is pretty quick, and I had no pain or discomfort afterwards. You get a dye test after 3 months to make sure the tubes closed completely and then you're done. I've had no problems or side effects.
Good luck with your decision.

When I had my last child, I was looking into B/C also. I asked my doctor about this and he said there have been problems with it. I didn't ask what they were as I was really interested in an IUD (Mirena). I had a friend who had it done and she was happy with the coils. I'm not sure if you can have children after, though.

Good luck.
