"Diaper" Rash in Potty Trained 2 Year Old

My 2 yr. old daughter has what looks like a diaper rash but she is potty trained. We still put diapers on her at night, but she usually will wake up dry. I'm not sure what is causing this or how to treat it. She occasionally will complain that her bum hurts. If you have had your children experience this, or have any ideas on how I can treat it please let me know. Thanks!

Sometimes they just wipe excessively and it irritates their skin. You can rub a little ointment or vaseline on her buns and see if that helps. Also, when little ones are first potty trained sometimes they miss a bit when they're wiping and that can cause irritation. A bath with lavender oil will help. Eventually, the process should be even easier as she practices more and more!

We've just gone through this with my daughter who is potty trained but wears a diaper at night. In our case, we tried diaper cream then neosporin and finally antibiotics. I don't know how it happened, but our doctor suspected it was a rash started by the hot diaper at night that just got infected. But she also made us all bathe in 1/4 cup bleach as a precaution against strep.

My thought is yeast infection. There is yeast on everybody's skin, and if the bacteria that is naturally on the skin gets killed off, the yeast can grow out of control. If you are using an antibacterial soap on her, maybe switch to Ivory or Dove for a little bit, and if you have any Monistat, try that on a small area to see if it helps. If not, take her to the doctor and have it checked out. My daughter had what I thought was poison oak, and it turned out to be a yeast infection (on her thigh!). Turns out she had been slathering herself with hand sanitizer. Lovely, huh? =)

She may have a yeast infection. Those diapers at night still hold in moisture even if she doesn't potty. You can try an over the counter yeast cream. Another thought is to try Bordeaux's Baby Butt paste at night.

Good luck.

My daughter has the same issue. She will get irritated down under and complain that her bum hurts. I just put desitin on the affected area overnight and it clears up. Also, more frequent bathing has been an effective prevention. I think bacteria just builds up down there because of their inability to really wipe well combined with the diapers at night, and that leads to irritation. Good luck!

Just a possiblity- I had a friend who's child had what she thought was a rash on his bum. It wouldn't go away. Turned out it was MRSA. Maybe you should take your child in to get it checked out.

There is a good chance that it is yeast, the same type of infection that women get, and children in diapers get. Try using a little bit of 7 day monistat cream on it - do NOT use 1 or 3 day, it is super concentrated and often causes burn like marks, even on grown women.
It is just an imbalance of good and bad yeasts within your body, can happen following an illness, a round of anti biotics, or sitting in a wet bathing suit or diaper. Good luck

You daughter most likely has an imbalance of good to bad bacteria in her gut. Putting her on probiotics (purchased at Vitamin Cottage or another whole foods store) in the refrigerator section will bring this back to balance. Many times skin and yeast issues are due to this imbalance. Purchase probiotics made for children and follow the directions on the bottle. Could it just be that she isn't wiping well? It's a skill we need to learn and in my daughter's case (3) we are still working on it! That can lead to irritated skin. If so, just make sure to clean her when she goes - maybe with a wet wipe. Also watch that you don't use bubbles in the bath. Aveeno oatmeal bath works well to soothe skin. Lastly, let her "air out" naked a bit during the day if you can. If none of this works, check with your ped. Good luck.

Have you introduced any new foods or detergents lately? Sometimes "diaper rash" is really a "red ring of doom" allergic reaction. Just a thought.
