Two Years with Rash on Her Private?

My little girl developed a rash I am guessing. It started on thursday night it was bright bright red and she said it hurt. I was able to put some diaper rash cream on it and she slept. When she woke up it was better more pink than red. I tried to keep it dry all day and would put cream on it at different times through out the day. She is potty trained at home so she doesn't wear diapers. I don't know how well it stays on after I put it on either. I haven't switched detergents or softners. We bathe everyother day and haven't changed shampoos either. What else can I do to make it go away! She hasn't said that it hurts to day but it is looking more red than it did yesturday! I am at a loss!

So What Happened?

So far I used the Lotrimin all day yesturday! Everytime after she peed I would clean her and put the lotrimin on and then some hydrocortizone cream and some panties. And it started to look better after the second application! She managed to stay dry all night last night and I think that helped too! So I will continue that today and see if it looks completely normal by tomorrow. If it is still a little pink I will take her in jsut to make sure she doesn't need anything else like an anitbiotic! Thanks soo much for all the help!! I was at a complete loss and almost forgot about this site! I am soo glad I remembered you guys are awesome!

I also agree, it's probably a yeast infection. Although it's more common in women, my son got yeast infections a few times around that age. Good luck!

I would also have to say the only thing that comes to my mind would be a yeast infection. You can also try aquaphor. That is the best thing that I have ever tried on my daughter that has worked. Best of luck.

It may be a yeast infection. Check out the above website. Hope it helps! And I hope your little one is feeling better soon. Blessings, ~S.~

LOTRIMIN type cream...yes antifungal. A day care person and a dr told me to always start with an antifungal on a little girl (just the outside). My dtrs redness has always gone away. It it is yeast or something you make it worse by puttin on a diaper cream as that holds the moisture in. My dear dtrs has always been looked better after one application and been gone within a few. Good luck.

Hi R.,
My daughter, who is 4 gets quite red and uncomfortable there and it happens (according to her doctor) because when she pees and wipes herself, she's not getting all the urine wiped away. So I make sure that everytime she uses the bathroom I go in and wipe her with a wet wipe (the same ones I used when she was in diapers). It's hard sometimes to do this all the time, but it is worth it, because as soon as I miss doing this a couple of times, the redness and pain are back. The doctor also suggested 1/4 cup baking soda in a shallow bath to soothe her when she does become irritated, as well as a small amount of vaseline (only externally!!) after drying her. (The vaseline also protects the delicate skin from exposure to urine.) I would bet that this is your little one's problem. It's pretty simple, and also makes sense, as they are so little and haven't really mastered wiping themselve properly at this point. Good luck!

First, no bubbles in the bath and do shampoo last, right before she gets out. Both bubble bath and shampoo can cause irritation.

Second, if it doesn't go away soon, I would talk to the doc. It could be thrush or something else. And the doctor could recommend an ointment that is thicker than regular stuff.

my daughter who is now 4.5yrs is particularly prone to yeast infections.... it gets very read, irritated, she says it hurts.
taking a daily probiotic helps tons!! you can get little chewable pills at a natural food store. for immediate relief I have some topical cream from monistat. that usually clears it up overnight. good luck.

It's probably yeast. My daughter and son get it from time to time, either on their genitals, or on their thigh or "underwear area". The diaper rash cream won't help the yeast, you'd have to get an anti-yeast creame. If you don't want to use that, reducing sugar and/or having her eat yogurt or take probiotics will help it clear up!

I am pretty sure it is a staff infection. You have to have a Rx cream to get it to go away. My little girl had the same thing. No matter how many diaper creams I put on it, it wouldn't go away. Call your dr.

Mydaughter has the same problem. Our pediatrician says it's a very common problem for potty trained girls to have. The doctor told me that sometimes girls "leak" a liitle urine after they go to the potty and the acid irritates their parts. Other than being sure she is wiping properly, Our doc recomended putting AquaPhor (a type of vasseline) on her privates to protect her from the irritation. She said do that everynight and Whenever throughout the day and it will improve. It has worked for my daughter.

It may be a yeast infection or a staff infection, but it's likely just irritation given that after just one application of diaper cream it seems better. This happens to my daughter every few months, and she's now nine.

Plain water baths only. Soap irritates their 'parts' so you need to make sure she's rinsing them in a shower or bathing with plain water only. My DD got them *a lot* from about age 2 on, and according to my Dr. they can't get a yeast infection until they're much older and the only two culprits are not wiping correctly or soapy bath water. GL!

I've heard that lavender is good at soothing these problems too. You can put a little in the bath water and that should help a bit, but make sure it is not a lavender-scented bubble bath product. Try using something all-natural with lavender essential oil. I have friends who use lavender bath crystals when their little girls get irritated. As a bonus lavender also helps with bedtime, calming them down too!

sounds like it could be a yeast infection... both my daughter and my son had one in their first years. Yeast infections don't respond to diaper cream. Use some of the external treatment cream from a monistat kit or some lotrimin to get rid of it. If those don't help in 2 or 3 days take her to the doctor.

Hi R.. My daughter had this same issue from time to time. I found that she just wasnt getting enough to drink so her pee was causing it. I keep a better eye on her and make sure she drinks more and I have not had the issue reoccur. It's just a thought. Good luck, and happy holidays.

It is probably a yeast infection. You can use an over the counter cream like Lotramin or something on it and it should clear up pretty quick. If you are still concerned take her to the doc and have them double check it.

Good luck.

Wonder if it could be thrush? Thrush is a yeast infection, which in kids would show as an external rash (not internally "itchy" like adults). A thrush rash is usually red, and where it meets the pink skin there can appear to be bumps or blisters (but not always). There are over the counter creams for yeast, or doctors can prescribe a cream such as nystatin. Hope you figure it out!

It sounds like a yeast infection which occurs a lot when girls sit in baths for an extended amount of time. My daughter used to experience this a lot as a baby and toddler when I would give her bubble baths.

I recommend having her eat a lot of yogurt with live cultures in it and treating the area as you would for an adult yeast infection. I hope that helps.

Make it a GREAT weekend!

Hi there,

Something similar happened to my daughter too. The dr. told us to do a baking soda bath and that seems to help a ton. I use about 1/4-1/2 cup depending on amount of water I put in the tub. It first started for her when we went swimming at the rec center. I think the chlorine made her irritated down there. Another thing they recommended was the aquaphor lotion and not using bubble bath.

Good luck!

I agree with the previous advice. My daughter had a similar irritation and her doc said to have her take a bath with a little bit of baking soda to help re-balance the pH. That worked great in just a few days and now we just do it whenever it seems like she is having irritation (diaper cream is sort of a mess when they aren't in diapers anymore!!) I'm also very careful about letting her sit in soapy/bubbly water - I always shampoo/soap a the end of a bath - and that has helped too.

I have a newborn and have been using baby powder with corn starch. You can use powder with corn starch or just pure corn starch. It works wonderful for diaper rash! Think of it this way - your child has an irritation that is potentially painful and you are rubbing a wet thick cream on it possibly causing more irritation......and possibly harboring infection by covering it up with a wet thick cream..Hope this helps........
