My baby girl who just turned 1 has a TERRIBLE diaper rash, it started yesterday and has just escalated rapidly. The only thing I can think is: I started mixing some "chocolate whey" powder into her cows milk in order to get her to drink it , also she has bronchitis and was prescribed an antibiotic for this which I started on Sun. Do you think any of these could be the culprits for the rash??
She has also been drooling and biting things like crazy (she has no teeth yet). Any ideas or thoughts? She SCREAMS and squirms at diaper changes and was in so much pain in the bathtub I had to pull her out immediatly.
This doesn't seem like a normal diaper rash, it goes ALL the way to the top and above her private area...not much around the lower area. Could it be a yeast infection or something? I hate to see her in so much pain, please help!!
My daughter had such a bad diaper rash i had to bring her to the doctors for it. They prescribed two cremes to put on her and it cleared it up. I believe it was yeast and it may be from the whey. I would reccommend a trip to the doctors and another good creme that you can get from the store is called Butt Creme (yellow with a baby on the front... I think)

Hi C. W,
Take her to the doctor. She may be having an alergic reaction to something.
I would start off by making her body more alkaline also. Her ph is to acidic that is why she has this problem to begin with. Give her water that is alkaline and keep her away from citrus juice. It is too acidic.
I am a wellness consultant and have some suggestions for you.
If you want more info let me know and I can walk you through them.
Have a great day.

Hi C.,
I would ask her doc about a soy milk...sounds like she may have milk allergies. For the rash get some KINGSFORD corn starch at the grocery store (where the baking products are)...It will get her cleared up in no time and is NOT expensive or messy.
I wouldn't give her chocolate right now.
Blessings.....

If it's very red and a little bumpy it's probably yeast from the anitbiotics - the chocolate may be adding an additional irritation since it naturally contains caffeine.
My son had a ton of ear infections and yeast became our diapering nemisis.
Take her to the Pedi - do not stop the medication. I nthe mean time slather her little bottom with a zinc oxide diaper cream and then a thick coat of old fashioned Vaseline to lock in the medicine and keep her skin shielded from her urine and poop. change her diaper every 45 minutes. Also Aveeno makes a great oatmeal bath for babies - mix it in a warm bath and let her sit in it - make sure the bath slightly cooler than usual! My son would heave a sigh of relief whenever he got the oatmeal baths.
Your pedi will tell you to use an OTC anti-fungal cream like Lotrimin ( get a fresh new tube) - not the other kind. I layered the cream on under the zinc oxide and Vaseline and it usually made a big difference after 2 hours. Change the diapers as soon as she goes and ALWAYS use the Vaseline. The next time she's on antibiotics use the zinc oxide - I usually mixed it into my tub of Vaseline to save a step.
If she goes to daycare or has a sitter be prepared to nag them because the state standard is a diaper change every 90 minutes and they tend to "forget" the ointments.

OK...don't know about the powder or all that but what really helps a diaper rash is after you get her all cleaned up, use a hair drier on her bootie for a few seconds to make sure everything is absolutely dry... really makes a difference.

It could be yeast infection but I think it sounds more like she is allergic to the milk, Mt son was had a milk allergy and then outgrew it by about 2 yrs old.

C. i use Bag Balm in the green can it works great for diaper rashes. You should be able to find it at any pharmacy or health food store. I bought mine at Kaiser Pharmacy. I would try that first and if it doesn't improve within a day or two i would take her to the doctor and ask them to check for yest infection.

Is the rash more dottie or pimply? Sounds like a yeast/fungal infection to me- my daughter gets them about once a month after a bad bout of diarrhea. The antibiotics are the most likely culprit- it does spread quickly. We have had really good luck using Lotrimin (the athletes foot cream)- just keep using it for several days even after the rash seems to be gone. If the Lotrimin (or any anti fungal) does not work pretty quickly there is a prescription cream.
Good Luck- I know it is so hard to watch them in pain.

My guess is that you have three or four things that could be the culprit, but the antibiotics sound most likely. And what others have said about it being a yeast infection is also likely... because taking antibiotics can bring those on.
You also need to consider that your daughter is new to cows milk, since she just turned one. I would definitely stop the chocolate whey powder... I'm not familiar with that, but chocolate anything at her age isn't a good idea.
It also sounds like your daughter is teething, which in itself often brings on diaper rash, but I'm thinking that may not be the biggest factor.
I second the idea of using a topical cream for yeast infection... but would advise you to call the Dr. first.

Call your pediatrician, it is likely a yeast infection with the diaper rash. Try to keep her bottom dry and out of a diaper as much as possible. Your dr can tell you which creams are safe for little ones. Also ask about lactobacillis powder to prevent diahrrea when taking antibiotics.

Anytime I give my boys antibiotics, I give them probiotics (FloraStore Kids) at the same time; 2-3 packets per day (usually with their meal). After the antibiotics are done, I continue with one packet per day. I also try to give them more yougurt than normal. In addition, I keep clotrimozol (sp?)on hand (althought Monistat would also work) and start using it right away. My younger son is more sensitive to antibiotics and always gets a rash, so I try to treat it early. Last time it lasted a for a week or two after he stopped the antibiotics. I also limit dairy a bit during this time and give them orange or apple juice fortified with vitamin D and calcium (Minute Maid Kids).

It probably is a yeast infection. My children had it and I got a prescrition from the Dr. to clear it up. I have a friend who's child had it and she didn't have med insurance, I asked my Dr. and she said to use OTC medicine for vaginal yeast infections. it worked!

It is very common for antibiotics to cause yeast infections/diaper rash issues. Depending on what it is will determine how to treat it so you may want to have your daughter checked out. I would give her lots of yogurt and a good probiotic to replace what the antibiotics killed.

Others may have already responded but just in case...
My daughter had a strange and expansive diaper rash this year and I didn't know what to do. I googled diaper rashes and came to a great site that described 5-6 different types of rashes. Hers was definitely a yeast infection. And as you probably know antibiotics can mess up the pH in our bodies and lead to yeast infections quickly. The treatment was the same as for you and me. We bought the topical cream (not the stuff that goes inside) from Monistat and put it on her every time we did a diaper change and sure enough it went away easily. 2-4 days until it was nearly gone.
If you are worried about doing this without consulting your Dr. then just call! Sorry I can't remember the website right now - but google works wonders, right? Food allergies don't usually start in the diaper area as far as I know. You would see signs of it all over her body. But strangely a yeast infection will start on a baby in the diaper area and then it will spread to their torso and back and such. Good luck!

The medication caused the diaper rash and now you need medicated cream to cure the rash. Bathing and diaper creams will not heal it. It is a yeast infection. Call baby's doctor.

Hi C.,
My advise is when she is at home with you don't put any diaper. Let her rash area breath, that's what i did when my son was young and had a rash. You can put on cotton underwear, put the waterproof mat underneath, and just let her play. Just clean her with water, not wipes untill the rash goes away. Put Desitin at night and during the day if you want.
Hope this would help because we never can see out little ones in pain.

Hi C.,
Sorry to hear about your baby girl and the diaper rash. I think it's the antibiotics. You should contact her doctor and ask him for advice. They might prescribe some over the counter diaper rash ointment.
Good luck to both of you.

Hi,
Milk could do it, cause the diaper rash.
Berts bees diper cream is the best for this, also blow dry area on luke warm setting before applying cream, that works great you can see the redness disappearing as you blow dry,I think your baby is still young enough that they won't be to scared of the dryer, when they get older they act like its the end of the world.... Longs/CVS is where I get the Berts diaper cream.
Hope this helps.
By the way whenever you add something new to the diet it could cause diaper rash, and go away after a week or two, but anti biotics cause the runs and that really can cause diaper rash.

It sounds like a yeast infection. My daughter had one when she was younger, and I called the advice nurse, and was told to get monistat 7 and apply the cream with diaper changes.
The best diaper cream that I found out there was triple paste, a little bit pricey, but worth every penny :)

It sounds like it also might be a yeast infection. I have two boys who are older now, and I also took care of twin 18 month old girls. They all would get rashes that I thought were diaper rash, but wouldn't respond to normal treatment. It turned out that they were yeast infections. At the doctor's suggestion, I mixed Lotrimin antifungal (over-the-counter) ointment in with the diaper rash cream to clear it up. Of course, I'd first check with your pediatrician, because it sounds like it could be the antibiotic, an allergy to the chocolate whey powder or milk and the teething. Good luck!

I would stop using the chocolate whey powder in case that is what's causing a reaction and be sure to slather her up with Desitin (we like the regular extra strength- creamy doesn't work nearly as well!)wherever it looks irritated.
My 14 month old just had the same thing 2 weeks ago, all the way up th front too to the point where it looked like little blisters almost. What seemed to help a ton was actually giving her one or two yogurts every day, the kind with live cultures. Especially since she's on anitbiotics, her little body needs those right now! Also, try to change her as soon as you notice she's wet and let her run around naked so the skin can dry out. Our little one is all better now- hope yours is soon! Good luck! :)

it may not be diaper rash. my little girl gets yeast infections, and they are horrible. try coritzone cream mixed with miconzinole or something like that, (over the counter yeast infection medicine). do this for a couple of days after the symptoms seem to have gone away, so they don't come back. don't use wipes on her, cuz they will burn. try giving her baths and let her be naked. no baby powder either. antibiotics can break down the good bacteria in your body, too, which is there to keep yeast in check. hope that helps.

My son had and sometime still has the worst diaper rash, looks like burns and can appear out of nowhere. I mix a little spray solution (8oz H2O, 5 drops lavender oil, and 2oz Glycerin, you can buy glycerin at Rite Aid – don’t use too much or it will feel sticky) it can be used instead of baby wipes or water. Use spray with a baby wash cloth and make sure once you are finished cleaning the bottom dry it VERY well, allow a little air dry time. After the bottom is dry I use Vaseline and baby corn starch powder, works great and usually is clear in about a day.
Good luck!

From what you have said it could be all three.
I would stop the chocolate whey powder until this rash goes away.
Antibiotics can cause very painful rashes.
At diaper changing time I would advise to use a warm wet soft paper towel or better yet a very soft wash cloth and not a wipe. If your daughter has fungal yeast infection you can use over the counter yeast creams. I used an antifungal on both of my boys when they got yeast. I got it at the pharmacy in Kaiser. I would mix this with Vaseline (helps to keep the pee off of the skin) and desiten.(sp?)
After you daughter is off the meds and her rash is cleared then you could try the whey powder again.

My guess is the antibiotics--it's like a yeast infection, and often the amoxycillin-based ab's (especially augmentin) cause such a reaction. Give her lots of yogurt to replace the good bacteria, and ask for a prescription level ointment (or otc for yeast infection)
Oatmeal baths probably will help as well.
good luck!

Take her in to be seen by the doctor now. Don't wait. It could be anything, but why risk it. Get professional medical attention today. P.S. when this clears up, a word from a fellow mom. Whenever possible rinse or bath your baby if they have a bowel movement. Baby wipes can sting and don't clean off everything. I only used them if I was out and couldn't get my baby in the bath. It may sound like a pain but my son very rarely got diaper rash.

yeast infec can be from RX for sure. use monistat then vaseline on top all over to keep her pee from touching the skin or ask for a RX for nystatin. also in the bath you can put baking soda & epsom salt she'll get better really fast - my son always did. but get a big jar of vaseline & use for EVERY diaper change, don't forget it in your diaper bag
