I don't know much about Durham and realize you have one care but we live in Hillsborough and love it! Its a great little town with lots of character.
So, I know there's tons of crime here in Durham. How do you ladies deal with it? Do you feel safe where you live?
I used the Durham county crime map to find an apartment for us in a lower crime area that's still near west campus, where my husband works. We love the place, but it seems expensive. ($825/2bdrms--or is that normal?) We're not sure we can afford to continue living here when it comes time to renew our lease since we assume they'll probably raise the rent. Where is there safe housing near Duke? We're currently west of duke campus, off of NC-751, but hubby'll be working on East campus come Aug, and around east campus it is even worse than around west campus! We're considering moving closer to Hillsborough, but I dislike the idea of his having to commute. (Plus, we only have one car. Right now I drop him off, and if we stay here when he moves to east campus, he'll get a bus pass.) Any suggestions?
Thanks for all the comments! We're checking out some apartments we hadn't noticed earlier that are near us. We're also keeping our eyes open for a small house in a nearby neighborhood, northeastern Durham, and southern Hillsborough where we have some close friends. We'll just have to be careful and prayerful, I guess.

There is crime everywhere, I live in Chapel Hill in a very nice neighborhood and we've had a bunch of break-ins....Durham gets a bad rap in my opinion. Unfortunately, nice housing in college towns is expensive, so it's always a trade off as to commute vs convenience and location. When my husband had his first job in a college town, we had one car, and he took the bus. We saved a lot that way and he liked reading the paper on the way to work!
hope all goes well for you.
Hi,
Have you thought about Granville County? You can be almost anywhere in Durham is 20 minutes or less. As far as only having one car, there are hundreds of people a day driving to Durham. Carpools and rideshares are easy to find these days with gas so high. My moms apartment here in Butner is less than 700. It is 1100 square feet and in a very safe location and is only .5 mile from I-85! I can give you more info on the area if you'd like.

Hi R.,
I'm E. and I live in Durham as well. I choose not live towards the part of town you're in because of crime. However, I'll be the first say that crime is every where. I don't care where you go, you'll find in some shape form or fashion.
I'm from Durham and spent most of my years growing up southwest Durham and southern Durham. I now live in an apt. complex off of Highway 54 near Southpoint. This is our second year living here and we haven't had many problems at all. At one time, there was one car that had been stolen and one other time, around Christmas, a good description of a young male was given to residents saying that this person was breaking into apartments. It seems as though those two things were nipped in the bud quickly by office management and consistant police patrol. There are at least two policemen that live in our complex. From what the rental office tells me, those police officers have patrol cars come through our complex quite often.
Please let me know if you'd like further information. I'll be glad to share with you.
I know this is quite a distance from where your husband works, however, the complex is right behind a bus stop.
Good luck!!
We were just paying less than that for a 3br in Chapel Hill. Durham is supposed to be the cheapest town in the Triangle! Yeah, I think that's steep.
I could tell you where we just moved from, if you want to consider that. It's in Chapel Hill, but right on 15/501 and a straight shot into Durham. PM me!
I would encourage you to stay close to campus, rather than moving farther out where there might be less crime. My husband and I live in Chapel Hill, where I am a grad student at UNC. We only have one car, and we are able to manage because we use alternative means of transportation (bus, bike). There is definitely crime in our neighborhood, but living close to school is worth it. I love having a short commute and being able to get home to my son and husband quickly. I would think that living farther away with only one car might be kind of isolating, since I assume your husband would have to take the car to work, leaving you without any means of transportation.
