Hi Ladies! I just found out that I'm pregnant at 6 weeks 1 day. I was not planning on being pregnant and it came as a huge shock to me! For the first 5 weeks I took between 8000-16,000 vitamin a. I'm very worried about birth defects. Does anyone have any experience with this? God bless ladies!

What can I do next?

So sometimes I am directed by my doctor to take 50,000 iu's of vitamin D. But that is from a doctor and I'm not pregnant.

I hope someone with a medical degree directed you to take that much.

You should ask a doctor though.

I'd be concerned too ... about the person who directed you to take such massive dosages of vit a. Unlike most vitamins excess is stored in your fat and can cause damage to both you and your developing baby. I'd call your doctor right away and get that ball rolling. Hope it all works out for you.

I work in food science, and I have to say that it's generally bad science to take any single vitamin or mineral by itself - they are not metabolized well at all, and the body simply cannot utilize them alone. It's a terrific scam to sell tons of bottles of vitamin pills and mineral supplements, so the prime benefit is to the manufacturers and distributors and vitamin stores.

Please look into comprehensive supplementation, and discuss with your doctor the effects of that much Vitamin A and your reasons for taking it to begin with.

Good luck!

I think you should ask your doctor this question. Just pick up the phone and call (or email if you have that option.)

That sounds like a considerable amount of vitamin A but maybe I'm thinking in different units.

If it were me, I'd call my doctor right away. If you have nothing to worry about, then at least that will put your mind at rest. If your doctor has concerns, better to address now.

Good luck and congratulations I hope it's all ok :)

You should call your doctor right away. Doses in this range are associated with birth defects and you need more information than we can give you on this website.
