Hi Moms,

Many moms I know use chiroprators for their babies and children. Why? I thought chiropractors help with back pain? I also know that there are techniques for turning breech babies in expectant mothers but why would you take a baby or small child?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I wish I had known about this when my son was an unhappy, colicky, constipated newborn!

Like everyone else has said, its not just for back pain. The spinal column houses the nervous system, which controls all bodily function. Misalignments can cause the brains messages to not be received by the body parts each nerve corresponds to, and pain is just a symptom.. So that's what they do, keep the spine straight. I've been adjusted all my life, and my kids have from day one.

Chiropractic care, is not just for "back pain." It is used for the wellness of your entire body. Joints, muscles, organs, digestive system, IBS, reflux, detoxing, pain, misalignment, injuries, ear infections, etc. Chiropractic care, is not a cure-all, and should not be used for some things, some people, some injuries, etc. However, it can be used as a preventative to many things.

My son has been seeing a chiropractor since birth. He is very healthy, at 3. he has been mildly sick once in his life. Chiropractic care is certainly not solely responsible for that, but it has certainly helped! I was an assistant for a long time, I have only seen chiropractic not work for a handful of people. Those people needed therapies that could not be offered by a chiropractor. Seeing a chiropractor can better just about anyone. Even when they can't get certain things treated there. It's not all about being cracked and popped. In fact, you can get care that doesn't even involve that. I have seen the same chiropractor for years, and have only been "popped" once. He does many, many other things.

My husband is a chiropractor and they do a lot more than just back pain. My daughter has been adjusted since the day she was born. Because her neck is adjusted and she gets proper drainage she has never had an ear infection, and she is rarely congested.

Chiro's have also helped kids with bed wetting problems by adjusting them to alleviate pressure on the bladder.

There are many, many reasons why kids see a chiro. I highly, HIGHLY, suggest finding one that specializes in pediatrics. There are those that take extra schooling and continuing education to become specialists in that field.

They do not adjust babies and children like they do adults. My mom was freaked out when we told her my husband adjusted my infant daughter. Until he adjusted my daughter in front of her and she didn't even know it happened! LOL It's all very gentle.

ETA: Not all chiro's are against vaccinations and a good chiro will never try to tell a parent that their choice for their child is wrong. Also a good chiro would expect to see results within a few adjustments. If they don't they should be recommended other treatment.

I know a lot of mama's that take their kids to a chiro vs a Pediatrician when they are sick. The chiro can help with conditions associated with the nervous and musculoskeletal systems. They target and focus on the spinal alignment for overall health. It is the heart for where sickness comes from, once they align your spinal cord back to where it is supposed to be, your overall health gets better. Heidi B is right. The only downfall I do not like about chiro's is they don't really believe in immunizations for your child and I do. So they will sometimes preach as to why you shouldn't chose to have your child immunized and if you are a mother/family who believes in that, they will try and talk you out of it. I took my 12 month old son to a chiro because of his chronic ear infections, he went to her for about 2 months and my son wasn't getting better. One night he woke up screaming and when i went in to see what was wrong, there was blood coming from his ear. We rushed him to the ER and he had a busted ear drum from all the infection. One day of full antibiotics and he was feeling much better. Our PED told us that had we of brought him in she would have put him on meds right away to help fight the infection. You have to be really careful when taking them to a chiro. They believe in natural body healing.

Babies it's good to take especally when they are born naturally because being forced through the birth canal is very hard on their little spines. It is supposed to help with colic. Kids need to be treated because their back get out of alinement just like adults do. I take my kids to one to help with their lungs and allergy's as well.

I take my daughter (since birth) and myself for well visits. Keeping the spine straight will keep your body functioning properly. Our chiropractor also does adjustment to help sinuses and ears drain. My daughter is 6 and has never taken antibiotics and only needs to see the regular doctor for well visits.

I will be taking my baby after he's born (I'm 33 weeks along). I wasn't aware of all the benefits of chiropractic care for kids until I started seeing one myself and talking to other Moms who take their kids. A friend of mine brought her baby for gastric reflux. He got adjusted, and the problem was gone. I've spent thousands having tonsils and adenoids removed and tubes in ears for my daughters... and friends say that it would have been completely unnecessary had I taken them to the chiropractor. So I'll definitely be trying it with this child.

I have been taking my son since he was about 8 weeks old. He sees a wonderful lady who specializes in mamas and babies. He has torticollis and scoliosis, and sometimes when he is so out of alignment and screaming because he hurts, it is the only thing that will help. The doctors say he doesn't hurt from the scoliosis, so he shouldnt be in pain and they won't give him any muscle relaxers, and chiro visits are the only thing that give him relief. Also, he has never had an ear infection, and it is really good for helping my daughter with constipation. Also, since she is a clutz, just like her mama, and it helps align things back when she lands on her tailbone.

My chiro highly recommends treating children. He says it's basically like maintenance for the spine - keep it strong now to avoid having problems in the future. He also said it can treat things like acid reflux in infants.
