Child Development Book?

Basically, I am looking for a book on child development or understanding how children think and effectively disciplining. My kids are 5, 8 and 10 and are well-behaved most of the time. Our biggest issue is responsibility in regard to school work, we have a lot of issues with that (forgotten school work, forgetting to turn things in on time, losing papers, saying that they checked backpack but they actually didn't, etc). My friends all seem to be having the exact same issues with their kids, who are the same ages, so I am starting to realize that this must just be part of being age 7-12. I think we could all handle this a lot better if we could understand our kids' way of thinking better. Anyway, any book recommendations for us?

What can I do next?

I have never seen a book that covers multiple personalities. Heck I have yet to see a book that covers anything useful.

In my opinion kids are simple, it must be worse to not do whatever. In the good old days you forget your homework you get a big fat F. No one does that anymore, they get another chance, and another chance......

So you either do what I did, tell their teachers if it isn't there it is an F or you come up with something else. I would suggest life ends until the next day of school. So you find out they didn't turn in their math on Wednesday, Wednesday night, no TV, no phone, no computer, no nothing..... For the sake of your sanity I would suggest a buy out, say they get it done ASAP or without prompts, say they have it done before you realize it, well then they don't lose the whole night.

What you want in the end is them looking at their backpacks without asking. The only way you can do that is if what happens if they forget is worse than remembering the first place. Clear as mud?

This isn't really about development, but you also mention effective discipline.

I'd recommend: How to talk so kids will listen, and how to listen so kids will talk.

You might understand more if you have better communication.

A book my not answer your problems, discipline & consistency may!
How about putting a sing on the door reminding them, setting a time to do homework and putting into the backpack before playing games tv or video games, this includes after school sports.

Teaching your children how to take responsibility! You kids may also be seeking your attention so why not help with their homework--especially these days when it is loaded onto kids and they may not understand it!

Also there are book such as Jim Phylan's that ma help-----but the core of the issue lies in you. DSiscipline does not have to be physical, just creative---such as no video games or cell phone until all homework and chores are completed. Trsut they will not die as a result of taking the cell phone away or pulling the plug on that video game.

Part of your job as a parent is not to always coddle them but to teach them how to take responsibility, including for their own actions.

BTW: Children may not admit it, but they crave structure, limits and boundaries, sp put them out there, they may complain but ultimately will be more respectful and responsible!

I'd recommend Love and Logic by Jim Fay. He is also an excellent speaker, if you have an opportunity to hear him speak, go. I'm pretty sure their websites about his strategies today too. Good Luck!

Also check out Brain Rules or Brain Rules for Baby by John Medina. Great reads about brain development.
