Sounds like it's just hurt, not infected. You need to put the earing back in ASAP. My daughter had a cartilage piercing and was told not to take it out for 6 months because the holes will close up really fast, like within a few hours.
MORNING!
i pierced the cartilage in my ear last Saturday. My son and I were playing yesterday and he accidentally hit my ear; ( he is 5 and sometimes we tickle wrestle) it hurt SO BAD!, Later that evening, the part of the ear where the earring is, got very swollen and red. I took the backing out of the earring. THIS morning, it hurt so bad i took the actual earring out. It's been about four hours since i took the earring out AND my ear is very swollen and it hurts. Has anyone experienced this? I am icing it down BUT it doesnt have puss or anything, not sure if infected or just hurt. Any advice, comments, ideas? please let me know THANK YOU!

id put it back in asap unless u plan on getting it redone cartilage heals very quickly especially when theyre very new.. when i got mine ..and i have a few. done they said not to even take it out to clean it for a few weeks.. they said to use peroxide or whatever cleaner they gave u where u got it done.. use a qtip or cottonball to put it on and spin the earring and put more on... its gna hurt like crazy if u hit it its totally normall.. i rolled over in my sleep the first night i had it done and same thing in the morning it was all red n hurt.. .. definatley put it back in if u like having it.. the longer u wait to put it back in the harder it will be .. about 2 months after i had it done i took the earring out to clean it and forgot to put it back in until 2 days later and the hole was definatley smaller and i had to force it in.. didnt feel too good
Since it is such a new piercing it could just be extra irritated from the accident, or it could be the beginning of infection. I used to have my share of piercings. Cartilage are always the hardest and longest to heal since well, it's cartilage...not soft flesh. Keep it clean of course. Are you doing saline soaks?? If not, mix up fresh salt and water several times a day and use a cotton ball to hold the soak against the piercing for 15 minutes or so. It's probably not a good idea to put the earring back in now. Since you took the earring out, it'll be less likely to drain if there is an infection. I'd do the soaks, ice a little and keep an eye on it.
i pierced my cartilage myself when i was 15, and kept the same ring in it until about 2 months ago, when it randomly just popped out...i am 32 :) i never had an infection. i have been putting a regular earring in it with a back, and it bothers me when the hoop never did. maybe go get a hoop put in like someone else suggested? i do remember it being sensitive for a long while right after i pierced it...i have pierced my own ears a bunch of times and that def hurt the most.
I only lasted a month with mine. It didnt seem infected, but after 25 days of it hurting like heck to put my head on my pillow, I gave up on it! Wasnt that cool anyways.
$$ Money down the drain.
Yep they close fast--my has closed as after I kept the earring out due to painful sleeping on it. I am not doing it again.
