Boy Loves Electronic Stuffs

My son is now 9 and 1/2 month old. He loves and is so excited to see the light on the refrigerator, the turn-on microwave (the light of minutes when we turn the microwave on), the light of number/dots white we run the diswasher, laundry machine.... I took my son to shopping mall few day ago. He is very excited but the most exciting moment is seeing one of the kiosk having the advertising word in red light running...Overall, any little dot/number/letters with light in any machine make him so excited (more than his toys). Is it normal? Have any Mom experience childs acting like this.

Thanks,

What can I do next?

At that age my daughter was also in love with lights and if she was ever upset when we were out I just had to find some lights to show her and she would settle. She is now a very bright almost 3 year old. Enjoy it and don't worry.

Yes. It's very normal!, just wait till he goes through a phase when all he wants to play with, take apart, put-together, talk about, dream about, etc are sprinkler pieces! BTW, my 14 month old's favorite toy is the remote control that we don't use anymore. He know's it's his, and loves those buttons even if they don't even do anything!

My son is 4 1/2 yrs old and loves electronics and anything electrical more than any toy. He has always been this way. Matter of fact he prefers going to Ace Hardware than to Toys R Us! Don't worry. It's different I know, but you'll see before too long how cool his interests are! When my son was three he was given a kit that you can hook things together from a battery to make a pinwheel spin or a light turn on and he thinks it's amazing! Enjoy!

Hi. My son was like that as well, anything that lite up he was intrigued with. As far as my son goes it was just a phase. He's now 4 & is completely normal. I haven't heard of anything this could be related to. Good luck.

Totally normal. My son loves it all. I think it has a lot to with the fact that most things that we as adults have and use on a regular basis have these lights. I know that my son wants to do everything that i do and if lights up that is even better. Don't worry about it. IT is a phase and it well pass. Just wait until he is into spider man or something and well not take off his favorite underwear becuase there are the only ones that have whatever charachter on them. Fun times.

My daughter absolutely loves the lottery machine at Safeway because it has the red lights above that give messages. She will freak out until we go and stand there and stare at it for several minutes and when we leave, she freaks out because she doesn't want to leave it. Whatever that is, I don't know but she shares your son's passion for lights.

Hi there,

My 11-month old daughter also loves all kinds of lights, blinking ones or non moving ones. We were in the bank once where there was a ceiling of small lights in a grid, and she was just mesmerized. I think it's completely normal. :)

Take care! Enjoy your bundle of love!

My brother was just like this. He would also take all of the small appliances apart at a very young age and my mom would have to ask him to put them back together so she could make toast, etc! He is now a very successful lineman for SMUD, doing what he loves and making a good living. Your son will be just fine and you can call him when you need electronic help around the house we he grows up :)

Hi C.,

I would be careful with having to much electronics around him. It can be too much going into his system and could cause problems later.

You can call your power company and ask them to test areas in your home to see what is safe and not for your baby.

Wishing you wellness.

My son loved lights so much at that age that we were convinced that the overhead light in his room would become his best friend and that he would grow up to be an electrician! He is now 5 years-old and still likes things that light up, I suppose, but he also likes riding his bike, gardening, playing sports, being silly with friends, painting, etc. In other words, this is totally and completely normal. As an adult, I still like going into the make-up department because it's really shiny. It took me awhile to realize that that is why I seem to walk through it even when I don't really need anything. Lights just attract attention. That's why so many products use them. No need for concern. In any case, electricians make a pretty good living!

Yes, it is completely normal. What to watch for: if you ever feel like he is fixating only on lights and not paying attention to *anything* else around him AND you see him struggling in other areas of development, ask your pediatrician. Slight fixations are normal. My 21-month-old can't get enough of wheels and buttons.

Yes, I'd say his behavior is very normal. He's intrigued by the lights and his little brain is probably trying to figure out how those things work. Nothing wrong with doing this. If you're really concerned though, just call your peditrician and run it by them. Otherwise, you may have a engineer on your hands!

When I first read your posting, I thought you said years. I was getting ready to write, "Well, no. That is not normal. As a teacher, he sounds like he's on the autism spectrum."

Thankfully, your child is 9 1/2 MONTHS old. That's normal. It's exciting to him. They love bright lights, blinking things, etc.

Don't worry,
Stephanie

Most little ones like things that light up so this is normal. There is a toy called a bumble ball that jumps around and lights up or the simon game where the lights flash and then you are supposed to hit the lights ain the order they flashed which he won't be able to do yet but he will like it.

Hi,
I just wanted to comment that if this is something that he is interested in, encourage it. My cousin's son has always been interested in anything spinning (pinwheels, ceiling fans, tops, etc.). He even had a happy dance when he saw things spinning. So it's been real fun to follow his progress, he is now 9 years old and the interest is still there (you should see all the spinning things in their house). He has evolved to roller coasters; draws them, builds them, dreams of designing them when he gets big! So enjoy you son enjoying the lights!

Good luck to you.
