I have a 10 yr old daughter. Her body has been changing like crazy. I don't remember myself going through this. She hasn't started her period yet. My question when she does start her period where at school do I keep her stuff? They have little cubbies in there room. They don't have lockers. Where does she put her items?

What can I do next?

I'd give her a little purse or bag to keep pads/tampons in and make sure the teachers knows that she's started and might need to use the restroom all of a sudden.

Does she take a backpack to school? Most backpacks have smaller areas that can be zippered closed.

I would also alert the teacher when she starts her period so that they can be sensitive to her need to go to the restroom and take her backpack.

Just before going on Mamapedia I read an article about girls having periods earlier and earlier. She shouldn't be the first that the teacher or the school has had to help get some privacy.

By the way, if she wears skirts to school, make sure that she has biker shorts underneath.

I would advise her to go to the nurse, you could even introduce yourself and your daughter to the nurse to make sure she would be sensitive to your daughter's needs, but she would be able to see if she needed different clothing, they have restrooms in the nursing room, they could also see if she was having cramps and be able to help with this too. If she asks to see the nurse she would probably be able to see her faster than just a bathroom visit sometimes.

My daughter was 12 and at the Middle School. Have a talk with her teacher. Girls are starting so much sooner. Also ask about trash cans in the bathrooms. Do they have stalls with doors? Talk to your daughter about proper disposal of used products.

I was nine and in 4th grade when I started. My mom had me keep a pouch in my backpack, we also had cubbies. Started carrying a purse in 5th grade and either kept it with me or with my backpack, depending on what class I was in, we changed classes starting in 3rd grade. There are many little pouches out there she can keep her stuff in that are discreet. My school didn't have a school nurse, but most schools now do, so you can contact the school nurse and have her keep her pads there, if she's imbarassed to keep them with her. Fortunately now, she has many choices and ways to keep her supplies hidden. Hope this helps. Good luck and God Bless.

I didn't start my period until I was 14 and a half! Late bloomer? Probably. At that age I was in junior high and carried a purse. I would just get her a little purse, or maybe even just a little coin purse that she can carry with her to stash her feminine items. Thing is at such a younger age (even at 14 when I started) girls hate to carry a purse or anything to the restroom because they know it broadcasts that it's "that time of the month." So I'd just tell her to be sure she wears clothes that have pockets during that one week a month and stash her items in her backpack. She can discreetly grab one and put it in her pocket before hitting the ladies'. Good luck to you and your daughter!

We had those too and we were in middle school, lol. We keep ours in our backpacks, purses, and a little zip bag that rested in our cubbie. I went to school with a girl that start hers at 8 and turned around and ended up pregnant, still not sure it that was her choice or not so sad. My son is 10 and his body is changing too. I know with all the hormones in our foods today girls and boys are growing up in body faster than normal. I have a girl that will turn 7 this year and we have all ready talked about one day she will start a period, I do not want her being scared like another friend of mine. Oh also talk to the teacher about it. That way there will be nothing said if she carries something around with her. I even keep one in my pencil bag so it was at the ready if it was needed. I liked the thin over nights for school because they last 8 hours and sometimes you are testing and just can not run to the rest room. And I love the thin because it can fit inside my pocket with out anyone knowing it is there.

At this age most of the girls have started or are starting so this is when they start carrying purses or such.

I started really young, at age 11, and my mom would give me a solid colored makeup purse (not the common see through ones) to keep in my front puch of my book bag. I also kept a hair brush, hair ties, and kleenex on top to hide the real reason I had that little bag! It worked for me! Good luck!
