So What Happened?

Thank everyone for the input! I appreciate it so much. I am not sure what the cream is called, she is at the sitter right now but it looks like a vaseline. In the two days of applying, it is 70% gone. Thank God! I just hate for her to be uncomfortable in any way. I had never experienced this with my oldest so this was a shocker for me!

My daughter had a couple of yeast infections before she was 1. She has very sensitive skin and gets diaper rashes very easily. My best investment was a tube of Lotrimin AF. It takes care of the yeast infection before it starts. Whenever she gets a diaper rash that I can't get rid of with Desitin, I hit it with antifungal cream and it disappears.

Don't worry, I was freaked out when I heard "yeast infection" to, but it is pretty common in babies that are still in diapers.

Good luck!

I am glad to hear that the rash is 70% gone. If you want it 100% gone, then each time you change her diaper wash her bottom with a soft washcloth, warm water mixed with baby bath soap. They love being pampered and it works!

Hi D.- Try not to be too upset. With the right mediication it should go away quickly. I am not a doctor, I am only speaking from my own eperience. Little girls just get them. I have been a nanny for 15 years and I have seen a few yeast infections in that time. In fact, my own 18 month old daughter had one at 9 months. It is usually a combination of a wet diaper and using antibiotics in the weeks prior to the rash. I have also noticed that mothers who frequently get yeast infects often have daughters who are more prone to them, especially while they are still breast feeding. You did the right thing by taking her in to be seen, be kind to yourself, you didn't do anything wrong. L.

Hello D.,
I think I agree with the doctor of your baby because, you can usually tell if is yeast or Candida , because the rash is in the diaper area from a plain old diaper rash or because the rash may have multiple red bumps, pus-filled bumps, or a scaling pattern on the infected skin. In addition, the rash may extend along the pubic area and onto the lower part of the abdomen.(like hers) Another big clue: A yeast rash tends to hang around for more than two days and doesn't respond to any traditional diaper rash treatments. It may also show up in the skin folds of the groin area.
Yeasts are one-celled organisms that live in and on our bodies. Bacteria are also a normal part of our bodies. It is only when the yeast overgrows that it becomes a problem. As pregnancy progresses, a woman is more likely to have an overgrowth of yeast. At birth a vaginal overgrowth of yeast can be transferred to the baby, and the baby can end up with thrush (an oral yeast infection). (not your case)
A yeast infection can show up in many places. Infants typically develop yeast infections in the diaper area and in their mouths. Babies get yeast infections easily since their immune systems are not fully developed.
The best treatment for a yeast infection is a topical anti-yeast or anti-fungal cream such as Lotrimin AF, Nystatin, I recommend (Nystatin it works wonderful) or Monistat. These are available in the drugstore without a prescription. Use it as directed on the label. It should take a few days for the rash to clear up.
How can you avoid yeast infection?
- Change your girl wet and soiled diaper as soon as possible.
- Clean your girl bottom thoroughly after a bowel movement and give it a chance to dry before you slap on the next diaper. (that is one of the reasons I leave my a little one naked for a while she likes it anyway i think yours will apreciate too.
- Don't put diapers on so tightly that no air can circulate around your girl's skin.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel with yeast infections, since they are rare in potty-trained children. So as soon as your child says "bye-bye" to diapers, you can say "bye-bye" to yeast infections, as well.
I hope this help.
Ps. i was wondering if the doctor recomend my favorite cream to you(Nystatin)?????
go take care your a little precious baby and dont worry about your bathtub or rubber nipples.LOL

Use yeast infection cream or what ever your doctor told you to use and keep her private area dry. Yeast needs a moist environment to grow. There's no reason to be appalled.

One thing that I did not see in any of the responses was antibiotics. They will often cause yeast infections. So, if your daughter has had a round of antibiotics recently, that is probably the culprit. My daughter has only been on them 3 times in her 2 1/2 years, and each time ended up with a yeast infection. I always try to give her lots of yogurt while she is on them, but inevitably, she still gets one.

Don't freak out. It is actually very common. Several of my clients (I run a Home daycare) told me they were told by their Pediatrician to use lotrimin when it started up. Of course you don't want to use the Lotrimin more than is absolutely necessary. Also letting her air out a bit after a diaper change can help it clear up faster.
Good luck!

My daughter got a lot of yeast infections. For her when she was teething she got a lot of diaper rashes that turned into yeast infections. Nystatin works great, I used that mixed with either vaseline or aquafor. The doctor can also give you a prescription for something a little stronger if the the nystatin doesn't work. it sounds from the responses you've already recieved that this is a common problem. good luck. I know it's miserable having a baby with a sore bottom.

I have been reading a ton on probiotics lately due to my daughters stomach condition. Yeast infections are one of the #1 things that acidophalus cures. I get it in the liquid form to give to my daughter and it can be used directly on the yeast infection. My daughters stomach has really gotten better since starting her on 1 1/2 teaspoons a day. I checked with her Dr and a pharmacist before getting a dose for her age and weight. I suggest anyone who starts a probiotic do the same including doing their own research. They are an amazing thing! You can get them at any health food store.

My daughter after age 2 was getting yeast infections. no rash just the itching and it would drive me nuts becuase i could'nt do anythign to help her. you cannot put anything on a child that young and I called the doc and my daughter refused to go becuase she did'nt want to itch out of the house. I'd just keep her naked from the waist down adn a cold wet washcloth on hand for her to sit on. I felt to helpless. I know benedryl helps. I'd give it to her and after it kicked in there was no more itching. the poor baby. it was becuase she was potty training and wipign the wrong way. I'm assuming becuase there was nothing that could have giving it to her that I can think of. I wanted to hive her monistat so bad at least the cream or wipes but they kept telling me not to in the pharmacy and the doctor's.

Hi D.,
Yeast infections are common in babies. Boy or girl. My girls have had a few. The Doctor should have given you something called Nystatin or they say get over the counter yeast medication. Ask your Doctor. You just apply it to the area as recomended. It will take a week or so to go away. I use to put A&D or Butt paste on in between the use of Nystatin to keep the area protected from wetness so it would heal faster or so it was so irritated. I also would rinse the wipes, or rinse my girls under water after changing because the stuff in the wipes would sting them and irritate it more.

Hope this helps..

Hi D.,

My child ahs had several yeast infections. Unfortunately, that might be genetic. We also found that diapers being too small didn't help. Sometime it is tough to know when to go up a size. Anyway, we have begun giving her more baths, and changing her a lot more too. This has helped her with her yeast infections. Oh, and if she took any antibiotics for sickness, that could cause one too. Hope this helps....

Blessings,

My 10 month old daughter just got over a yeast infection herself. My doctor suggested to give her a bath with baking soda, and let her sit in it as long as possible. Also, use plain corn starch in her diaper, to absorb things. Another idea is to allow her to play for a while without anything covering up her diaper area. The biggest issue is making the yeast unwelcome, which means getting rid of heat, humidity, bacteria, and darkness. I know avoiding a diaper all day isn't possible, but time to air out makes a difference. Good luck!

OTC, Boudreaux’s Butt Paste is awesome for yeast rashes. I'd also increase her acidophilus intake, either by supplement or feeding her yogurt. My baby was really yeasty, and we ended up with thrush (ouch) and had a heck of a time treating it. Also, giving some bare-bottom time helps. Yeast hates sunlight and dryness.

Everyone below is right about it being normal. Some people never get yeast infections when others get them on a regular basis. Yes yogurt works wonderful but you have to make sure it has active cultures. Activa has three active cultures and works to regulate your digestive system. Also remember to stay away from acidic foods like orange juice or apple juice they can make there bottom twice as bad. Athletes foot cream is the same as yeast infection cream Myconazole ect. and it is usually less expensive check it out. I have also read in a self help book about using the plain yogurt and applying it directly to the area, and also a large dose of garlic is supposed to help. I know taking a bath in plain epsome salt is supposed to also help women.

There's absolutely NO reason you should be appalled-it's not the plague :). This is not a big deal-ask the doc from some diaper cream. All three of my kids got it while I was nursing them. It is a pain to get rid of if you are nursing but it will go away. I had to apply the diaper cream to their diaper area and on my nipples after nursing. I got it too!

Hi D.!
My baby boy had yeast infection before. So we used jock rash ointment for that. 3 days and it was all gone!!! It decided to come back a little while ago, but as soon as I saw a couple of pimples, I just put that ointment, next day it was all clear!
So as your doctor if it's ok to use that on girls (I don't see why not). And good luck!!!

Hi D.,

I haven't had this happen to me (yet), but I have heard of other parents experiencing their daughters getting yeast infections... Sad as it sounds, it's totally normal.

I know bathing is a big factor in getting yeast infections... Try bathing her while she standing as much as you can... If you have a bath seat for her, maybe you should try scrubbing it once a week.
I did this with my daughters bath seat the entire time she used it and she never got a yeast infection. I am also a stickler for a clean bath tub.

Hope this helps!

That same thing happened to my daughter when she was little about that age and I was told by my pediatrician it had to do with the rubber nipples on the bottles and he had me switch immediately to sippy cups to stay away from the rubber. He said it does tend to bother little girls. Wierd but we stopped bottles and it didn't happen again(we also had medicine to help clear it up too.) Good luck. Not sure if that helps at all.

Hi D.,
My daughter had it too. Even in the later years she had it. What worked well was the ointment that the doctor perscribed,I know there is more than one kind, but any of the antibiotic ointments. After her bath at night I would put the ointment on, and then I would put baby powder with (cornstarch in it), over the ointment, so the ointment would be able to stay on longer without getting all over her clothes. It worked, but it was one of those things that seemed like it was never going to end.

Best Wishes,

my daughter had those too; it drove me nuts... BUT... I did find some good advice! Let her "air out" as often as possible... laying her on a towel, etc. Another thing that REALLY helped, is to have a light that you can use to dry out/heat the infected area. It'll dry it out, plus the warmth feels great. My daughter actually loved the light treatment.... it was soothing. Then when you rediaper her, use ALOT of whatever yeast infection cream you can get from your doctor; I remember the one I used as being yellow in color, and I used alot. You may also want to mix it with some vaseline to help keep out the wet, which exascerbates it. The more exposure to air and sunlight, the quicker it will heal. Hang in there and God Bless..

Don't worry, it happens, Especially with girls that are still in diapers. Moisture causes yeast to grow and they're stuck in diapers all the time that get wet and sit in them sometimes. Try a different brand of diaper and try putting pure corn starch at each diaper change. Also if she's been given any antibiotics it can cause a yeast infection, keep that in mind next time the dr gives her antibiotics.
