My 7 month old son has a yeast infection. I called the doctor and she said that it is because he has diarrhea from his teething and it can cause a yeast infection easily. She told me to get Lotrimin and use it everyday on him and give him baths in baking soda. I have done all of these and it seemed to get better. Now in the last couple of days it has gotten worse again. Does anybody know of another way to get rid of this? He cries so much when I change him, I just feel so bad for him.
Thank you everyone for the great advice. I took him to the doctor today and he actually has a stomach virus. They kept telling me over the phone that it was a yeast infection, so I am so glad that I took him in. He still is going to have to use nystatin on his bum though. Thanks again everyone!!!
I would go to the health food store and ask about acidophilus. In adults it will help prevent yeast infections while taking antibiotics. Good luck!
Any kind of feminine yeast cream will do the trick...the expensive/good ones. The main ingredient in most of them is Lotrimin or something similar; so the Lotrimin you find in the departments that treat *athletes foot or jock itch*...will work just as well. I'd use it with *every* diaper change and it will work more quickly. And YES, feeding them any kind of yogurt with *live active culture* is a great way to help clear things up and a great preventative. So, if your child has a tendency towards yeast...try to keep yogurt in his/her system.

Hi, I wanted to let you know that my son is just getting over a horrible yeast infection. The Doctor prescribed Nystatin, which helped, but the infection came and went. Finally, I used Nystatin and put some petroleum jelly on top of the Nystatin--wow--did that ever make all the difference. It provided a barrier form his urine and allowed the medicine to stay on his infected area and not just rub off onto the diaper.

My son had the same problem a while back... His pediatrician also said to use Lotrimin. Didn't seem to work.
At this same time, I bought him some baby yogurt called YoBaby. That cleared it up! Then I remembered that yogurt, given in a normal quantity, can help rid of yeast infections. But if you give too much, it will cause more of it.
I would just give him one of the little containers once a day or every other day. Not more than once a day though... it went away the next day! :o)
We had the same thing happen when our son had a yeast infection. It went away, then came back a few days later. We did the Lotrimin AF twice a day again and it cleared it up.
It looks like you got a lot of good advice. I would only add to the Nystatin or Fluconazole, try allowing him to go bottomless as much as possible. Yeast grows in dark moist places so if you don't feel comfortable letting some air and light in frequently then change him hourly so that he stays dry and gets plenty of light and air on his behind. It does take about a week to clear up. Also you didn't mention if you are breast or bottle. That may have an impact on the return.

Definitely the Nystatin cream! Also, remember that yeast feeds on starch, so NO BABY POWDER in the diaper area--ever. I also found that Huggies caused my dd's YI's to get way worse! I could only use Pampers with dry weave. She was very sensitive to something in the diapers and the powder, but the Nystatin and letting her "air out" did the trick. It is recommended to clean the area with water only, so a trick I used was to take some wipes, soak them in water, keeping them stacked, rinsed out all the chemicals, placed them (damp) in the wipes holder, and I had water-only wet wipes. :) Oh yes, be sure to let the area dry completely before applying any diaper cream, otherwise, you trap the moisture INSIDE the cream and against the skin, leading to big problems.
BTW, the Nystatin cream seems to give them a mild, temporary ouchie when you apply it, but it clears it up so quickly that it is worth the short term pain.

My son went through this - It was TERRIBLE. My Dr. told me to use Lotrimin AF 4 x day and coat it with a thick layer of Balmex or Aquaphor to create a barrier between the urine and the infection, and to change him A LOT during the day using warm rags (no wipes) and drying him well before applying the Lotrimin. In between applications of the Lotrimin I applied just plain Aquaphor. It would preiodically come back like your sons seems to be, and I would just start the program all over again and it would usually clear up right away. Good luck - It's a terrible thing to go through!
my son also had one, and no over the counter remedies worked and finally the doctor prescribed I believe nystatin and that wiped it out after about 1-2 weeks. it was slow to go away, but the prescription finally made diaper changes bearable for the little ones.
Both of my daugthers have had a yeast infection. I think my youngest one has one right now because she has a serious diaper rash that is not getting any better. It is getting worse. my doctor gave me a perscription called FLUCONAZOLE. This got rid of it the first time in 1 week.
The secret to treating a yeast infection is to continue to treat at least 5 days after the sxs disappear. SO even if it looks gone, keep using the Lotrimin 2-3X day, the Baking Soda baths and blow dry his little bottom.

I would want to use a prescription. Anyway, definately KEEP doing it even after it looks gone of it will come right back. Make sure you put tons of that stuff on because it's better to keep it coated all the time. I feel bad for you because those are so painful looking. Mine would always bleed:( Good Luck!

My daughter would get yeast infectoin too. The Dr perscribed Nystatin Cream and it would go away in a day. It worked great. We would have to use it from time to time. The pediatrution said its caused from there urine. There is a ointment also and she had me use it with a perscription cream for Diaper rash. Both went away so fast I couldn't believe it. It was called Happy Hinny. And my daughter was happy afterwards, so the fit. I know the name is funny but hey it worked better than anything over the counter. Both my children seem to be allergic to many wipes and stuff.
hello I would take him to the Dr. and get a perscription. I had to do the same thing my son's was bad and keep coming and going his Dr. said the same thing and it wouldn't go away I took him in and told them I need something better and they where happy to perscrib a medication. It has gone away now.
