My 12-year-old dog has a yeasty ear. It smells horrible, but she is otherwise happy and healthy for a dog of her age. Does anyone know of anything over the counter I can give her to get rid of the yeast infection? We are on such a tight budget. I just don't have money for a huge vet bill right now. Or if anyone knows of a very cheap vet around Madison Heights, I'd appreciate a referral.
you can clean the ear with a 50 50 mix of alcohol and vinegar
the alcohol is drying and the vinegar is acid - which yeast dont like.
but if she has and infection you will probably need to go to the dr to get some ear drops.
There is a homeade soltion of vinegar and water that you can use.... give your doggie yogurt and clean the ear out real well. Probably though you may need Zymox from the vet - you can google it but I think its a prescribed medicine. I lent mine to my mom in Illinois.. :( If you clean out the wax and goop then clean it well you have a small chance of getting rid of it, but my guess is you need to go to a vet. DONT let them sell you anything like ear wash or special food or anything :) Tell them only the Zymox or equivalent! Oh cheap vet in Clawson worth a drive and or call - Hamilton Vet Clinic :)
on a tight budget or not, you can't beat dr dogs ear oil for dog ear drops to treat ear symptoms like this, it's cheap, it works fast and it keeps the dogs ear infections away.
don't use vinegar, it can make the dogs ears hurt more, I tried it and it stung my dogs ears and it was terrible to see, he always has had bad ear infections that keep coming back, since using these dog ear drops we don't have problems and don't have to go to the vet all the time either

I always used the blue wash my vet gave me but I don't think it would hurt to try OTC vaginal yeast cream, though I never have.

We use alcohol on a every other day basis to keep our dogs ears clean. But we also had to get some ear drops because our dog was prone to get ear infections.
If you can get some drops, but keep ears clean and dry with alcohol. It doesn't burn.

Been there done that several times with my American Bulldog. No matter how many times I have taken him each time its been a yeast infection. Ive found because he has allergies his ears produce more wax, thus a yeast infections happens more for him. Ive controlled it by giving him benedryl and I found this solution on line that when used properly WORKS! It cost me under $20 to make and it makes a TON.

My mother found a product called "Ear Magic" to clean out her dogs ears...it cleaned them out, but then with the quick deep clean his ears became very raw. Call the vet and see if they can do anything with out an office call. If you don't have a vet you need one that you can have a good repore with. Also some of the Pet Smarts and Local human societies have cheaper clinic services.

The best thing for you to do would be to go to the vet. There are different types of ear infections, and even though it smells "yeasty" there are different types of ear infections-it could be bacteria or yeast or a mix of the two. There are different medications that treat different types of infection. Save yourself the time and money of trying several different medications/remedies that may or may not work, and spend it on treating the correct thing and get your poor dog quicker relief!
Also, if you are going to go to the vet, don't put anything in the ears because it could keep them from getting a good swab to look at under the microscope.
I'm sure you can find a reasonably priced vet around you-an ear infection shouldn't cost a ton to treat.
