Wondering If My Son Has a Milk Allergy?

My son is 18 months old and seems to be sick just about every 2-3 weeks. Whether it's a cold, cough, sinus infection etc. He is in daycare but no one else seems to be sick. I know kids are going to get sick and that its just part of growing up but this seems to be excessive. Someone mentioned a possible milk allergy. I have done some reading online and normally milk allergies cause rashes, stomach problems what we would think of as a typical food allergy. I did however read that milk allergies can cause respriatory symptoms like, runny noses, sneezing, coughing, ear infections, sinus infections etc. I was just wondering if there were any other mothers out there who experianced these same symptoms and it turned out to be a milk allergy? Thanks in advance

What can I do next?

Like another mom said...use the process of elimination. Switch to Rice Milk or Almond milk for at least 7 days and see what changes. My son has a milk allergy, not so much all dairy just mostly milk. Recently we thought he may have outgrown it so started giving him milk again and what do you know? he got a double ear infection! So off the milk back to Rice milk and all is back to normal. Your son could have a dairy allergy but I would start with milk and if after no milk still has symptoms then take away all other dairy for another week and see what changes. It will answer a lot. If nothing changes then I say its time to see an allergist :) OH and the reason I didn't suggest soy milk is it isn't the best first chioce, it is really harsh on my boys digestive system plus too much soy can cause a number of problems.

It definitely can be a food intolerance. My youngest had a virus every 4 weeks it seemed for a year until we did food testing with Immuno. We tested my girls and removed the foods that showed to be issues. After four months of avoiding those foods we started adding them back in one at a time. This has been amazing for my children. They are both so much more healthier. No more viruses all the time. It was the toughest thing I have ever done (not a betty crocker here) but I grew a lot and the girls do not have ear infections anymore. The only food we have not added back successfully for my youngest is cheese....she will still get an ear infection (this was a later onset symptom) which was the culprit in the first place. It has been two years so we are going to try cheese again and see what happens. The benefits of doing this were well beyond the ear infections: clarity in speech, clearer cognition, awesome immune systems (instead of the monthly virus she always got).

I never could have determined the source of the issue without the test. At the time of the test, there were 19 foods that were challenging her system, so no diary would have helped me. We also reduced vaccinations per our pedi's recommendation to help her system heal. After we got her 'healthy' we started again very slowly.

I ONLY recommend Immuno Laboratories due to the accuracy of their results; not the cheapest, but the results can be trusted. Seen many people use various labs and end up with issues still. I have personally seen this work for 10 or so people, not all with ear issues, most are for GI issues.

Kiddos being sick all the time is NOT normal. Go with your gut. I love Dr. Bain and how she thinks differently than most.....she has changed our family for the better for sure.

The best way to find out o your own is to cut out milk for a week or two and see if he gets better. Then when he is not sick give him milk products for a day and if he gets sick you know. I have a 5 year old who was always sick with same things but also got rashes very bad and I ended up finding a place that would allergy test him and it turned out he had 98 allergies with 64 being very high. When their allergies are very bad and making them sick it lowers there immune system trying to fight it and makes it easier for them to catch the slightest things. He required 3 shots a week for the allergies. We ended up moving pretty far away and his allergies lessened and now he is off the shots and only gets sick when the rest of his class does and his immune system is boosting up stronger all the time. Try the home test of cutting it out first then giving it back and see. Good luck

My 15 month old sounds exactly like this and my daycare provider mentioned the milk allergy as well. For a few weeks I limited his milk intake and did notice a difference but wasn't sure if it was the milk or he was just getting over a sickness, since he also was on antibiotics and nebulizer. In the past 2 weeks he has resumed drinking milk and has been fine, so I think it is just that time period where they get sick all the time. I remember my 3 1/2 year old did go through a period where it seemed like as soon as he was better, he would get sick again. I would say check with your pediatrician on your next visit and see what they say.

My boys both have that issue. They are allergic to raw milk products. Their dr said it's the milk proteins that they are allergic to. For some reason they can eat cheese and things that have milk cooked into them. Raw milk products will give them ear infections, sinus infections, and also affect their asthma. I would definitely cut milk out and see what happens. There are so many substitutes out there that you can try.

Good luck and God Bless!!

Maybe he has allergies? I've always heard that milk makes congestion worse and that could be prolonging it. When we moved to this area, my daughter developed lots of allergies to the outside. We also got a new dog that she is highly allergic to. I thought she had a cold because she was always congested and had the nastiest cough. I wouldn't take her anywhere because I thought she was sick. Turns out it was just the allergies. Our dog had to go outside which helped tremendously and if seasonal allergies get really bad then she takes benadryl at night and a nasal spray.

I have a dairy allergy and the first reaction I get if I consume dairy is sinus congestion. I do also get gut issues, but keep in mind that an 18 mo. old can't communicate that. Also, if he's had the problem for a while, the gut issues may not bother him because they're normal for him. Does he have normal stools? Both my sons have a dairy allergy. We didn't learn this for my younger son till he was 8. We also took him off gluten at that time, which is another very, very common and often undiagnosed reason why kids are sick alot. My son was amazed when his stomach stopped hurting as he didn't realize that the way his stomach felt was not normal. I also am gluten intolerant and just thought I had a sensitive stomach my whole life. The difference in how I feel is astounding. You can get your son tested for both a dairy and gluten reaction at enterolab: www.enterolab.com If you and/or your husband are of Northern European heritage (Irish, English, Finnish seem to have the highest incidence), then I strongly recommend you get him tested.

Yep! My daughter was put on Zertec at 8mo. for snotty nose that kept turning into a sinus infection. (Excuse me??? H@@ No!) The doc said no, milk could not be the problem. Silly doctor. I had introduced yogurt and cheese recently. I took all of it away for two weeks, no snot. Gave her a bite of cheese before nap and woke up as Princess Snot a Lot. Yep, it was the milk. Now she can have no more than one serving a day without having problems.

I dont have time to read all the responses but my daughter was the same way! Her ENT switched her to Goats milk and she hasnt really been sick ever since. We switched at about the same age and she is now 6 and half and on regular milk. We did goats milk for about a year and it did wonders.. before it she has 23 ear infections and not one since. You can get it anywhere in the ref section its about 3 something a quart. You can also get it in a can and mix it with water your self. Or you can find a local farm and they sell it for about 10 a gallon. Goats milk is also much healthier than soy, rice, cow etc....

Yes I had this experience with my daughter. I also have an older son who did not do this, so when I switched my daughter to cows milk and she began to get ear infection after ear infection, I knew something was up. The only thing I could think of we had introduced differently was milk. By the way, she was getting back to back ear infections for 3 months. I read that the protein in the milk can make the tubes swell which does not allow the fluid to drain, in turn, it gets infected. My pedi at the time shunned that was the case and that milk could not cause excess mucus production and that if she had a few more infections she would just reccommend tubes. I was against tubes. So after all I read I switched pedis and he suggested I try another kind of milk first for a few weeks, then if we switched back and she got an ear infection again we would know. Sure enough she did clear up then, when we switched back she got an ear infection again. She would not drink the rice or soy milk, but she drank goats milk. Now at 2 1/2 we have switched back to cow milk and she has had no problems.

I read this is a common mis-diagnosis and kids get tubes put in and adnoids taken out cause they are sick so much. If taking him off the milk does not work, then that is one thing eliminated. You know your kid best. And if you read on, most articles suggest that kids outgrow this allergy by age 2 or 3. Hope this helps and good luck with your findings!
