Winter Coat for 7-Month Old?

Should I buy a winter coat for my 7-month old? I know she isn't supposed to wear a bulky coat in the infant carseat, so she won't wear it on trips to the YMCA or running errands. When I take her out in the stroller in the cold, I cover her with blankets. We have a bunting for events like the Christmas parade when she'll be outside for a while. My husband really thinks she needs a winter coat, but I'm not sure when she'll wear it. Did other moms have winter coats for their babies around this age?

What can I do next?

I put my son in a one piece fleece, snow suit type thing. He stays nice and warm. I didn't have to adjust the car seat straps at all from his jacket that he was wearing before it got too cold out. I can't stand the thought of not having him bundled up, especially since they lose body heat so easily still. The bundle me wasn't an option because we leave the car seat in the truck now - its too heavy to carry since it weighs 8 lbs and he's 16 lbs.

I had winter coats for both my boys. I chose the thinner insulate jackets. They are not as bulky, but they are very warm.

There is no point in getting a coat for a 7mo. if it's cold enough to put on a coat she should be in a bunting of some sort. The reason they make buntings is because with small children under 2yrs old the get cold easier and can't contain the little heat they do have. You want their whole body covered. If you don't they will loose heat through there legs and the coat won't do any good.

Hi,
If your baby is still in the infant carrier, there's a GREAT product called JJ Cole Bundle Me that's like a sleeping bag for the car seat. It was wonderful when I had my November baby, because it kept her warm in the car seat and the top zipped off if the car got too warm, or we went indoors. I won't go into a long description of it, but check it out on any baby store's website (they sell them pretty much everywhere!).
Also, they come in lightweight fabrics and heavy fleece for winter and you can pop it in the stroller, too.
This was definitely one of my "must haves" that I recommend to my mom friends!!
Oh, and skip the winter coat. I would just stick with your bunting :)

Dear Wendy,
I bought a couple coats for my daughter at that age. Cute ones for when we would go to church. I also used a coat for Christmas photos. They don't 'need' one esp sine you bundle her up but why not go ahead and buy a cutesey one, in case you do have 'playdates' etc or go somewhere indoors with a draft. You can always save the coat for the next girl or sell it when she outgrows it.
Good Luck
Pammy

My 10 month old wears a coat when we're out - but I bought it a a thrift store - for 3.99! It's in excellent condition...for 4 bucks, it's worth the expense to be "prepared" for outdoor fun.

I'm mommy to a 10 month old and a 3 year old and while they don't wear them in the carseat they do have to put them on going in and out of the car. You never know when you will find yourself in a situation when you have to stand outside in the cold for a while. I always think better safe then sorry. We always have extra hats, gloves and coats in the car as well as blankets in case the car gets a flat tire or whatever. It's always best to be prepared and I think even if you only plan on using a jacket goint to and from the car to the store it's worth it. Walmart has some really nice inexpensive ones which is a plus when the grow so fast.

I used a nordic fleece coat for my daughter last year during the winter time when she was that age. It wasn't bulky at all and it kept her very warm throughout the winter months. We actually got her coat as a gift from a family member who bought it from Hanna Andersson which I know is a very pricey children's clothing store. If you go to their website you can get an idea of the type of coat and find it at another store that will have a better deal.

My son had one but it was because someone gave it to us. He actually would wear it. He was also walking at 9 months and way too squirmy at 7 months for the blankets though we did put them on top of the coat in the stroller. For car trips obviously we used blankets cause you can't really buckle them in correctly with thick jackets but if we went to the mall or stores once he was out of the carseat and in the stroller we would use his jacket because he liked to walk around himself a lot. You can probably find a nice inexpensive one at Kohls or Target or places like that. But I don't think its a total necessity but not a bad thing to have either.

i had a fleece one peice jacket type thing with legs and arms. it was sort of like those fleece pj's. fleece is warm but not bulky so it can be used in car seats. then add blankets for walking if needed.

Hi,

I would get a snow suit, it will cover your baby from head to toe and leave her face the only thing uncovered. If you are going to be out and she is in the stroller, it's worth the buy. Walmart has them for about $20...so even if you don't use it all that much, you aren't really throwing away money!

My daughter refused a winter coat at this age. Like other people said, we used a warm fleece instead of anything bulky.

Wendy,

I did not buy winter coats for my infants. I did as you were describing, but I also bought a warm sleeper in a size larger than their current size, For example, if they were wearing a 3-6 month sleeper..I put them in a 6-9 month sleeper for outings. I am talking about the sleepers with long sleeves and feet, not the "blanket/bag" sleepers. HTH

Yes, you should definitely buy her a winter coat. I use a coat in the car seat b/c it is too much of a pain to put the coat on and off getting in and out of the seat.

I bought my daughter a winter coat and a snowsuit last year and used both a lot. The snowsuit/bunting was good for really cold days and the coat was great for all other days. We got a lot of use out of it and it will keep your daughter warm.

They make polar fleece one-piece "jumpers" with a hood that I used for my son when he was that age (I did still buy a hat and gloves, although some of these have built in hands covers too). They just go over the clothes and keep them warm head to toe. A lot of stores carry them. They don't need to wear shoes yet since they are not walking so these keep them warm..you may be able to get them with or without the footsies too.

Hope that helps.

We had a "JJ COLE BUNDLE ME" something that lined her car seat and zipped over the top. Picture a car seat sleeping bag. It worked well if we were going to clipping her car seat onto the stroller, because she never had to be "unwrapped" and it seemed to be the least bulky and therefore safest in the car seat.

Now that she is 17 months we have warm and silly little bear jumpsuit that goes over her clothes. She will tear a coat off in an instant, so it is our only choice, but I am happy with it.

I don't think it is worth it for a coat for a 7 month old. It sounds like you have a solution for nearly every situation. When my oldest was one last year and just crawling I only bought him a snow suit because we were going on a ski trip and I didn't want snow to get in. We also bought boots which were a complete waste of money because he couldn't walk on his own yet.

my oldest son was 3 months at Christmas, so we had a 3-6 months snowsuit from Gap, and he did wear that in the carseat, but he was so small at that point, it was easy to keep it tight even though he had the bulk on. Our youngest son was 7 months at Christmas, and I think we just had the car seat zip up cover and blankets, although he kicked his way out. I didn't know about them w/the first kid! we also put hats on him in it, because he would push the flap open (who wants that in their face, anyway!?) and kick the bottom off (it was elastic.) We got it for about $14-15 at walmart in 2006.

We got our 3.5 mo. old daughter a thin "snowsuit" to wear in the winter. We take her out in the Bjorn and figured that would be good for her to wear then, as well as any time we're out and about at events.

I don't see a problem with a coat if you would use it on walks or whenever.

I bought a wonderful polartec suit from Land's end. It isn't big and bulky, but since it is polartec it was really warm. You could fold over the sleeves to cover the hands and the same for the feet. I loved it so much I bought another one for this year.

All kids need a coat on in the winter. Just get one of those one piece with the feet. Some of them are not so bulky especially if you are going to be out doors most of the day. A blanket want hurt either to help keep the wind out of her face.

I am a older mom with four teenage boys.

I never had a winter coat for any of my children, I would always get one of those bulky onsie type things that were very warm, and they always seemed to keep them very warm. More than likely you would just be wasting your money on one b/c you will prob. never really need it, both of my kids were born in the summer so they were about your childs age during the winter. As long as you use the onsie type thing and blankets she should stay very warm.
Hope this was some help!

Well it depends on how cold it gets where you live. We are in South/East VA and I am from the DC area. It gets about 10degrees or more colder around DC. I didnt have heavy winter coats for any of my kids in either location. Not until they were walking or at least in a front facing upright car seat. Way too much bulk and besides in the car they would get way too warm w/ the heat running and being surrounded by their car seat.
So the answer is: NO COAT :)
Just buy a nice heavy sweater or light jacket even, w/ a hood or hat is good. And bundle w/ blankets. Thats fine. They get cranky anyway when they get too warm. I find my kids are better acclimated to the cold weather since I never over bundled them as babies.
