Hello Moms,

Most of my friends with 4 - 5 -6 yrs old are bragging and ra ra about how good the wii games are for kids. My daughter has asked if she can have the Wii as well. She played with it and did fairly well for the first timer. Even my brother got it for his 5 yr and 3 yr old.

Would you buy a Wii for a 5 year old, if not what you suggest will be the right age?

My kids' Grandma has a Wii.... since my youngest was about 2 years old (and he is now 4 years old).... my eldest is now 8... they love it and play it and we all do.... it is very family oriented.... my kids like the sports games.... and for us the adults... we work out/exercise with it.... and you do sweat with it.

It is good for the whole family....

www.gamestop.com is good for seeing what games there are and the ratings/prices of it... and what games are for kids.

The game "Cooking Mama" is great for kids and real fun.... both for little girls and boys. I even find it fun!

good luck,
Susan

The wii is so much fun and its something that we can all play together :) My boys love the sports games. We have the wii fit and got a winter sports game that uses the board for skiing and sledding.

If you are going to get them a game, a Wii would be better than any other system... it at least gets them up and moving! (perfect for cold or rainy days!) Plus, they are tons of fun for older people too (we are actually playing golf right now while I am typing this. hee hee) I would recommend getting the 'family game night' games, which are just Wii versions of board games. The one we have has Life, Mouse Trap, Clue, Twister, and Yahtzee. Even if he isn't too great with the control, he will easily be able to play those!

I say it depends on the child. I have two boys and when my eldest was 5 he loved the wii games (still does at age 8, and all games in general), but my youngest, who is 5 now, I would not buy for him because he simply isn't into any sort of games systems. While his brother is having his game time he will amuse himself in other ways, he doesn't even really watch others play it.
If your daughter likes that sort of thing then I say go for it, they have some great games for the younger players, but only if they are into the technology already.

The actual Wii itself might be a bit lavish for a 5 yr old as a gift , but the games themselves are quite appropriate for younger kids. We have a Wii , it's a "family" item , we then have purchased games as birthday or Christmas presents for the kids.

We got a Wii two years ago from my FIL. We've rarely used it! However, when we do we enjoy it. Our oldest is just now 4, and I think I am going to get him a few things for Wii this Christmas. I'm also getting us either Guitar Hero World Tour or Rock Band World Tour that we can all do together -I LOVE those and didn't have the $$ last year. I've also been wanting Wii Fit, and Target has the Super Bundle for $67 at 4am Friday morning! I only do the Black Friday/middle of Thanksgiving night thing for specific items that are great deals -and that may get me! With my 4 year old in mind (and us too -things we can play together) -I'm going to look at Super Mario Party, some of the Scooby Doo ones (he and I LOVE Scooby), I Spy and -many will think this terrible -but if there's a Wii version of Terminator Salvation I will get it. His dad got him into it when we go to the movies and they have an arcade game of it and he BEGS to go just to play it! It's a shooting game, but it's really not so terrible (you're shooting robots and it's not gory). Just remember to limit their time and keep them going outside and using their brains for creative play!

We bought a WII for me and hubby -- when our daugther was 3, she started playing with some of the games. Really kool to see how fast she got the hang of things.... we like it and see no harm in letting our child play with it -- more of a family activity.

She often cheers for us when we are playing, so it cute and she learns to share as well. Good for coordination...

Hope it helps.

I think 5 is a great age for the Wii. There are going to be some games they aren't able to play but there are alot of others they can play and you will be surprised how quick they pick up the others. I think its a great system.

We just got the Wii last Christmas (kids were 3 & 6 at the time). My husband and I do movie nights with the girls every weekend and we were looking for something else to do during those cold winter days. We too played it at a friends house and we all liked it. We played it a lot during the winter months when it was too cold to go outside. I have to say that it wasn't played very much over the summer, but now everyone is getting back in to it and the girls are looking forward to getting new games this Christmas. I would say yes to buying it.

Our son was 6 and I thought a little young, but like other posters have mentioned, if they are motivated (which he was) he picked up a lot of the games rather quickly. He is now 7 and the Wii is a great draw when he has friends and cousins over, even if they are a little bit older than him they can find games to play together which is helpful. I asked him what games to recommend for your daughter just for kicks and he said "Dora" and "Cooking Mama" but I'm sure you could tailor whatever games you purchase to your daughter's interests. We enjoy the sports such as tennis as a family.

We got the Wii for our boys for Christmas last year, they were 7, 5, and 3. They LOVE it!! They like just about any Mario Bros. Game. We subscribe to Gamefly, which is like a Netflix for video games, so they get a chance to try several games out.

My oldest son also has low muscle tone in hos lower body, and his Occupational Therapist noticed a significant difference in him one we bought the Wii Fit, and he started doing balance games and "exercising" on there. :)

Before we got our Wii 4 years ago (when our kids were 10 and 7), I would have never considered a gaming system for kids as young as yours. However, Wii really is a good gaming system for younger kids and families. We love playing as a family, there are lots of age appropriate games for younger kids. We love Wii sports and sports resort, family game night, carnival games, guitar hero, dance, dance revolution, etc. Our son (who is more into it than our daughter) also has a bunch of other games. I know 3 year olds who play the Wii just fine.

There are a lot of great games for young children on the Wii. Not inappropriate at all. I have a 6 and almost 3 year old. The 3 year old is a little young for it yet, but my 6 year old loves it.

I am thinking of getting a Wii as well. I think there are defintely some things my almost 3 yr old would be able to have fun with so I think a 5 yr old would be no problem. Plus they grow so fast, before you know it she will be well past 5 yrs old.

Our family got the Wii many years ago when my daughter was 3yrs old. She very quickly got the hang of it and my son (2yrs younger) picked it up easily as well. We love our Wii, especially in the winter when kids activities are limited by the weather and getting dark early. My kids (now 7 & 5) love Mario Kart, Carnival Games & Wii Resort.

I would buy it as a "family" gift. We bought one a year or so ago and it's great fun. Just got done with a round of bowling with the family! My daughter loves it (she will be 5 in a month or so). My hubby and I play it sometimes in the evening too. A 5 year old can certainly play some of the games, so I think it would be a great family gift. Enjoy!
