Hi L., Just a suggestion, but why don't you try a classical music station on a simple radio instead of white noise? It may in the long run be more soothing! And developing a love of classical music is a lifelong gift to any child. Best wishes.

I have the Homedics sound spa. A friend gave it to me and we use it ALL THE TIME. They are available on Amazon.

I believe our Homemedics white noise maker was purchased at J.C. Penney's. It plays continuously or with the timer settings for 15, 30, & 60 minutes.

Like you, I couldn't find a decent one in the stores so I looked online and found one for $30. It's brand name is Obus Forme and it has 20 different settings from nature sounds to white noise, has a volume control and has an automatic off or not setting. It's great - I have three small children and they were always waking each other up. We bought ours from Brookstone on a recommendation from a friend. It is AWESOME! With the touch of one button, it plays white noise (or several other noise options) all night long, and is volume controllable. It is a bit more expensive, but after testing the one at BabiesRUs, I found it to be much better quality. It's also portable. We bring it Grandparent's house for sleepovers, hotel rooms, and whenever our girls are sharing a room...baby sleeps right through it all. I highly recommend white noise makers. I have never found fans loud enough (in my small house) to filter out the noise.

we use a small fan that's plugged in to the wall - or you can use a humidifier fan, just don't put any water in it - you'll probly have one of those anyway. Good luck

I chcked out the web for you. they haves lots of them on there and looks like radio shack has them. i used one too when my son was a baby, but i dont know where it came from b/c my friend got it for me. that was about 5 years ago. good luck

We use a loud fan in our girls room (ages 3 & 2). They do not wake up, even when the newborn is yelling for milk.

My daughter sleeps to a small fan in the summer (used to be a window A/C before we got Central A/C), and in the winter, her humidifier and space heater (has a blower that goes on and off) help. Why heat up/cool down your whole house and use a white noise when you can be more "efficient"? ;) Good luck!

I got the white noise machine from Babies R Us (it was the only one that the store carried). It's a DexaBaby brand I think. It has several sound options and can either play for one hour or all night- your choice. My only complaint is that the sound, even on the highest volume, doesn't get really loud. I also have friends that play CD's on repeat all night- either CD's of white noise or calming music. Good luck!

I had a Homemedics I bought at Target that ran for about 4 years before it finally croaked. It is available at amazon: http://www.amazon.com/HoMedics-SS-2000-Relaxation-Machine... I liked it because it could run on batteries when we traveled, or the AC adapter at home.

I now have a Filtrete HEPA air purifier in the nursery. It make a reasonable amount of noise, and it is amazing how much less dust there is in there than the rest of the house. I'd really recommend thinking about that.

Over the summer, my son became addicted to the noise of his window air conditioner. I found this: http://www.marpac.com/soundscreen.asp and he sleeps with it on every night now. Works wonders!!

We use a Honeybeam hepa air filter to create white noise. It's more expensive, but I have to say that my daughter's room is the cleanest room in the house by far!

I found one at Bed Bath & Beyond which plays all night, has 6 different sound effects and 3 discs which play a slide show on the wall. I love it and I use it every night for my 2 year old. It cost $25-30.

buy a air purifier. it will make the room easier to breathe in and it makes a white noise. make sure the baby is eating enough before he goes to sleep. the baby may also be getting some teeth and nothing may prevent him from waking up. for the teething issue try hylands teething tablets and some tylenol before he goes to sleep.

We actually use a digital alarm clock with the nature sounds. The "Wind" setting sounds like white noise. It's perfect because you can play it all night long! Our clock is by Timex.

We have 4 of the Conair brand. They have 8-10 different sounds but we prefer the white noise. They are small enough to travel with also. They can either be set to a specific amount of time on continuous. We bought ours at Walmart but I have seen them in Target and Bed Bath and Beyond also.

I'd suggest just using a table fan. We use one in my daughter's room and it is fabulous! Plus they're easy to find- we got ours at Walmart.

I haven't read any of the other responses, but how about a radio in the room turned very low to a classical station? My husband goes to bed with the radio on and it drives me nuts, but it helps him. He usually has it set on talk radio, but is sometimes willing to change it to something more soothing.

We use one of those air purifiers. Filters dust, etc. for my son's allergies plus the fan makes just enough noise to stop any noise from our living room to his bedroom (we live in a rancher) and the noise from the fan is not too loud - we consider that his "white noise"

Pros: makes 10+ noises, including white noise; runs forever until you turn it off, has alarm capabilities.

Cons: the display light, even on lowest setting, is very bright and we have to cover it at night.

I always played a CD with soft classical music or lullabyes (on repeat) all night for my son. He got a LOT of use out of his little CD player!
I also ran a humidifier lots of times and -- go head and run it with water -- no harm in keeping those little nasal passages moist in the winter!

FORGET the white noise maker!!!! I have one in my son's room but didnt have one for my daughter, so my neighbor told me to buy a fan - so I bought a fan that sits on her little table for about $15 at Target and it BLOWS AWAY (ha ha no pun intended) the noise maker!!!!!! It works soooo much better at blocking out the noise!!!! I keep it on high, and aim it away from her (so she doesnt have any air blowing on her during the cold months).

I feel your pain! I have 3 kids and this has always been a problem. Instead of a white noise maker however we started keeping a fan on in the kids rooms (my younger two share a room). This is just enough noise to keep them all snoozing happily but nothing that we can't easily duplicate when traveling. Even hotel rooms have a "fan" on the thermostat!

I use one from Babies R Us - called The Sound Machine (I think that is what it's called). It plays a bunch of different sounds and even has the womb sound. I use the ocean sound all night long and even for naps. It doesn't have a static-white-noise sound though. But I do like it! With the monitor on, we hear the noise in our room, too, and now I can't sleep without it! :) If you do get this one, make sure you switch the demo switch on the bottom to normal play. Otherwise it only plays for 10 seconds!

Brookstone ... they are durable and have a variety of sounds. I have had them for 4 and 3 years respectively. I even take it to the hospital when my son is an inpatient.

I use a small fan in the corner of the room. I face it to the wall so it isn't blowing on anyone.

I bought one about 4 years ago at Radio Shack. I know you can purchase professional ones online (those that psychologists use). I never left home without it!

I always used a radio tuned to AM static. It has that fuzzy sound and sometimes you can hear some voices come through. It makes me think of what it must have sounded like in the womb. I have used this technique with great success. p.s. I keep a shower radio for use with the swing or stroller.

I just bought a Homedics white noise machine at drugstore.com for our 8 week old. It was $19.99, is super compact, plays all night and has a choice of 6 sounds (Rainforest, mom's heartbeat, ocean, rain, waterfalll and summer night. I loved it so much, I bought another for our 2 year old!
Alternatively, you can get a CD and put it on repeat. They are easy to find via Google search.

You would prob laugh, but what about a fan? Turn it on med. I also used a tv, and I would just play the static.....worked WONDERS

I used a CD of white noise that I bought online. I kept the CD player on repeat and it played all night. However, around 6 months and my daughter didn't like it anymore! I started using a CD of classical music. Good luck!

Try Bed Bath & Beyond (even online if you can't get to the store) We have the Homedics brand and it worked great for us!

We got a dog this fall and he barked at nite while learning to crate train. We all have a cold mist humidifier in our rooms even my hubby and i. They are good for colds and provide each room with the white noise.

Both my kids have one from Wal-mart...has 6 sounds and you can set it for an hour or for continuous play...I think they are about $20.00 there.

We always have a window fan running in our son's bedroom. That is what we use for noise. You can set it on a low or high setting so that it makes more or less noise. (For instance, if we have guests over who will be louder, we set it on high.) We also turn it so the breeze blows away from our son... won't make him cold.
It isn't in the window, it is just propped up on the floor, behind the rocking chair where he can't get to it. And even if he could, window fans seems to have smaller spaces between the "slats" so that little fingers can't fit in as easily as they do with typical table fans.
Then of course this can be used during the summer months in the window as well. Good luck!
