Maddie is now in CHIPS instead of medicaid (thank god), but they sent me a packet and i have 3 different plans to choose from. They are Amerigroup, Atena, and the Cooks group. Any tips on which one i should choose?

We see a TON of Drs right now, we have our Pedi (which after our 18mth check up, im not opposed to changing) and our GI Dr, and a dermatologist, and a geneticist. The derm and the geneticist i have yet to see since we have been on a 6 month wait. But i have waited 5 months and im not about to reschedule now LOL! So i am concerned (but not entirely apposed) about changing all of our Drs.

Any tips or referrals would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

What can I do next?

Well we are in the same situation.

I have been on Amerigroup they were ok and I switched to Aetna. My son had to see some specialist and had to get a referral and they were able to see him. The only problem we had was getting approval for Prostetics for his feet.
But they finally got the approval, they had all the Dr notes and all.

This year we went to Chips and I had to decide which one. I was looking at changing. But the problem was the local Dr's that are the closest isn't available for nerw patients. Also I called my sons Specialist office and got there opinion and they sd if I switch to another than I have to start over with the referrals where Aetna already been through all that before. So we stayed with Aetna hoping with my sons next Specialist appts he be covered and not have to start over.

I don't know if that helps or not.

Check and call the Dr and see if they are available and also if your child has any specialist check with them also.

Good luck !

my kids have the cooks children's health plan...i love it! my son is special needs & he sees a lot of specialists, doctors & therapists. i have never had a problem getting a referral or seeing a dr. (although of course for some there are waiting lists) i cant guarantee that you wouldnt have to change which dr. you are waiting for, but i have been extremely pleased with cooks health plan.

We had a foster child several years ago on Amerigroup. We weren't happy with it. There weren't many Dr.'s that would take Amerigroup. He had to see Specialists and it was difficult to find Dr.'s who took Amerigroup. Maybe it has changed over the years and I hope it has. You might want to check to see if your current Dr's take any of these insurance plans and compare the costs and what Dr.'s you can have access to. We have had Atena and we were happy with Atena. I have no complaints about the Atena. The Cooks Group, I don't know anything about, so I can't comment on them. Hope this helps.

I have Cooks. I like it because they have the Urgent Care center in Hurst open after hours and Cooks Childrens Hospital in Ft Worth. Also, when you call a Cooks dr after hours a triag nurse from the hospital calls you back to discuss your childs illness/injury and are very informative. They should have a variety of doctors to choose from, too. Hope this helps!

Get Cooks Children's Health Plan. I love it. The doctor's are great and the network is full of covered dr's and specialists. Even when we have to be referred out, the doctors take the time to find a dr who accepts CHIPS.
