What Was Your First Period like Postpartum?

Hi -

My son is going to be 18 months old in a couple of weeks, and I still haven't had my period yet. He is still breastfeeding once (sometimes twice) a day, but lately (past couple of weeks, especially) I have been getting period-like cramps and a LOT of clear discharge (sorry if that's TMI).
My husband and I aren't trying for another yet, and have been using protection, so I'm pretty sure I'm not pregnant.

Was just wondering if any moms have had a similar experience, and if so, how long this went on before you got your period.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

With my first and 3rd, I ended up starting my period while I was still breastfeeding (talk about HORMONES!)... with my second, I didn't have a REAL period until about a year after I had stopped nursing. The first time I got sick and I'm sure that contributed to an early menstral period, the 3rd time I know it was the stress of 2 kids and a newborn, which brought on a killer migraine, which triggered my cycle. My point is, it's different for everyone, everytime. I wouldn't worry too much about it, but if you're really concerned call your OBGYN and at least speak with a nurse... I don't think you really need to go in and get checked out quite yet. Best wishes!

I got mine after about 6 or 7 months (2 months after Breastfeeding stopped) Mine was really heavy and lasted really long. I recall saying that I think i am bleeding like a stucked pig. My periods are normally a 3-5 days but the first few periods after having the baby were really messy. They get better with time though.
If you are worried take a prego test and then be thankfully for not receiving your monthly gift :)

My first period was normal and started 4-6 weeks after my sons slept through the night and didn't nurse every 3-4 hours.

Start charting your fertility signs, you will know if you're ovulating or not. Get "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" to learn how. Then you won't have to use protection all the time, just when you're fertile:)

You may start in a few weeks. If you have not previously had any discharge, the clear stuff could be your body getting back on schedule. Typically changes in discharge can be a sign of ovulation.
It was about 18 months before my body kicked back in and there was a lot of cramping and they lasted forever (a full 7 days). It took about a year for them to get back to "normal" (about 4 days and no cramps).

Hello Robyn,
Sorry, i cant really give you advice, but just wanted to say, you got lucky, i also breast feed exclusively, my son is gonna be 5 months now, and a week after my postpartum bleeding had stopped, i was hoping not to get my period since i was breast feeding, but i got it anyways... I get a regular period each month.... But I think it is normal, gradually as you wean ur son off of the breast, your period should soon return...

Talk to your OB. After the birth of my second I went for quite some time without a period, but had discharge and I began to have concerns because I knew I would eventually want to try for my 3rd. Since it had taken me about 6 months to get pregnant with my 2nd, I did not want it to take longer with my 3rd.

I called my OB and discussed it with her and she put me on a prescriptive hormone to "jump start" my period. It worked and I eventually conceived my 3rd.

I had my first period while breastfeeding my first when she was 8 months and my second when he was 10 months. You sound pretty normal to me, I remember "feeling" like my period was coming on for a while (maybe 6 weeks) before it actually did. And then it was sporadic and took a good 6 months to become predictable.
