Breastfeeding Moms & Periods?

Hi, I have exclusively breastfed my almost 7 month old until about a month & a half ago when we started introducing cereals, veggies, & fruits. Her meals now are mainly breastmilk, with some cereal & purees. With my first daughter, I resumed my periods @ 5 months & I have done everything almost exactly the same this time around. So my question is, for moms that have had more than one child, when did your periods resume with 2nd, 3rd, or 4th children?

What can I do next?

With my first I resumed my periods after nine months while still breast feeding. With my second, my periods did not resume until a couple of months after quitting breast feeding. She was 16 months when she was completely weened. It remains a mystery to me why it was so different.

It's different with every baby. Your hormones and body chemistry are never exactly the same so you just never know what you will get. With my first, he was a preemie and hospitalized so I was pumping round the clock and got mine back at about 7 weeks. My daughter was ebf and I got mine back around 4-5 months.

Just make sure you are using some form of protection (preferably something that won't pass into your milk) if you aren't looking to get pregnant. Breastfeeding does not really work as an effective birth control method.

with my first it was right at 12 months actually on her birthday...I remember thinking "wow talk about a year right to the day!" LOL But with my second it didn't come back until she was 14 months! So your body will be a little different from child to child.

I'm currently breastfeeding my 5th baby who is 7 months old I think the return of fertility is different for everyone. I know some women who get their periods shortly after giving birth even though they exclusivly BF and I have friends who have nursed their little one into the toddler years and had to completely stop nurse to get their periods. I would love the latter option. For me though, I usually start showing signs of the return of fertility around 8 months and by 10 months I get my first period. Much of this depends on nighttime nursng too.

Most women will start noticing their mucus discharge will return and then eventually their period will start.

If you have anymore questions I would be happy to try and answer. My husband and I taught couples for 8 years about Natural Family Planning.

I have a weird lactating history...I started getting milk when I was 7 months along with my first. I nursed him for 13 months, and obviously had milk that time. I pumped 4-5 times a day, plus nursing at bed and morning and afternoon, all year. My periods started up within a few weeks of starting solids. I continued to have milk that I could express until I miscarried when my son was 2 years 2 months, and I was very dehydrated. I got milk back in (full breasts and everything) several days afte rhte miscarriage. I continued to have milk I could manually express (just a few drops) through my pregnancy with my next son, whom I nursed for 30 months. With him, I did my postpartum bleeding for 5 weeks, and then we moved into a new house two weeks later. I started bleeding again, thinking I had pushed it too much...but then I realized I was feeling rotten...bleeding...and had my period 8 weeks after giving birth. Frankly, it sucked. I had it regularly after that--but tried for 8 months to get pregnant, and could not (when previously it had been very easy) until I completely weaned. Now that I'm pregnant again, i have absolutely no milk, from the week I weaned onward. And, obviously, no periods. :)

It is not something you can count on based on what happened before. Your period will resume based on your current hormones which is based on how often, what schedule and how aggressive your baby is feeding. The hormones that were transfered at delivery. The current stress and activity level. The diet you are eatting. The amount of water you are consuming. There are up to 20 other things that factor that are not the same with each child.... So when you get your period can vary with each child. So do not count on previous ways of being.... With my 1st child I got my period at 4 months postpartum. With my 2nd child I got my period 13 months postpartum... Breastfeed them both....

Everyone is different. With our daughter I nursed 15 months and had one period a couple of weeks later and then got pregnant. I've nursed our son 12 months and still no period. Personally the longer it stays away the happier I will be! LOL

I only have one, but I was 13 months. Oh, the glorious days of no periods.

He's still nursing now at a little over 2 1/2 and my periods are just weird as anything. So, even when you get them back, they might be a little weird.
