My husband and I are going to New York in a few weeks for the tennis U.S. Open. I have been to NY a few times but my husband never has. It's been atleast 5 years since I have been and don't know of any of the "local" things to do. Do you have any suggestions? We are of course going to do the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Central Park and Ground Zero. We are staying in Midtown New York- just looking for some local restaurants, bars or shopping that you guys recommend...

What can I do next?

My daughter and I were there last fall to tape a Montel Show - be sure and go to Times Square and eat at the Roxie deli (huge sammies).......since it was her first time and we were limited on time, I took her to Macy's - it is huge and she loved it......oh and get one of those lovely hot dogs from a street vendor (and a pretzel)......have an awesome time!

Some of my favourite things to do in NY city:

- Museums esp The MET, Strolling along Battery Park and Central Park
- Shopping - H&M, Century 21 and China Town
- Dining - Balthazar (Pricey), Indian restaurants along Lexington Ave, Little Italy, and the food carts along Wall Street.
- Broadway Shows

I love taking the subway to commute through the city. There are also several spots across the Hudson in NJ where you get to view the skyline at night. Its pretty breathtaking!

Hope this helps!

I went about 10 years ago, but it was on of my favorite trips I've ever taken.. Can't wait to go back. Go to Serendipity. It is a little restaurant that has frozen hot chocolate. Very famous. Take the NYC bus tour. This is such a fun way to see the city and you can get off and on any time. We loved Little Italy and Little China. Very cool. You can't go to NY and not see something on Broadway... I saw Rent and Miss Saigon. Don't know if either is still going, I know Rent was closing down, don't know if it has yet, but it was amazing!! Empire State building was neat, subway is interesting, you have to visit a local deli for some yummy bagels in the morning for breakfast, I loved to tour of Radio City music hall. Oh, just talking about it makes me jealous! Have a wonderful time!!

Peter luger's for steak. Check out TKTS - you may be able to get seats for a show. I would also google to see if there are local street fairs going on - I remember an Italian festival in Soho in August or September, can't remember which. 42nd and 5th is the Public Library you see in movies (Spider Man, Day After Tomorrow) There's a small park behind it where you can relax - many NY'rs eat their lunches their (they buy them to go at the local deli's etc. Just walking up & down 5th, park, 42nd, etc. can be entertainment on its own.

Enjoy!

It was so fun to see a taping of a TV show -- there are many that are taped in NYC. We went to the David Letterman show. We were walking by and asked about tickets -- got some and were told to come back later in the afternoon for the taping. So it does take up about 2-3 hrs b/c you stand in line to wait and then they call you inside to sit down. But it was really fun to see the set that you always see on TV!! I think Regis and Kelly show; the View; Today (NBC) morning show; Ellen (?) all film from NYC.
We also bought tickets in advance (from Ebay) to a musical show there. You have to see a musical there -- NYC is the musical theater capital and the best actors are there! Some celebrities are starring in musicals right now -- I think Whoopie Goldberg is in Xanadu right now.

not sure if you like museums but again! -- NYC has the best museums in the country! The Museum of Natural Science and History is great! (http://www.amnh.org/home/)
And the Guggenheim is beautiful! of and of course -- a must is the Metropolitan Museum of Art!! "the Met"!! world famous museum -- it's so amazing! (http://www.metmuseum.org/)
