My personal fav is Coco Chanel Mademoiselle. However, when I am buying a gift for the nieces and nephews, I often just walk up to the counter and ask for the latest for x age.
However, I am learning more that perfumes can really make some people SICK.
With 41 suggestions so far, I hope all the men of Mamapedia are looking since the holidays are coming up.

No perfume at all!
I'm happy that people love to smell good. I just ask that whatever you wear, PLEASE use only enough for those who choose to be within a couple of feet of you to detect it. More than that can create a toxic environment for those of us who are unlucky enough to have chemical sensitivities (and that includes way too many young children). I've had to leave meetings, movies, and even restaurants in the middle of a meal when highly-scented guests are seated at a nearby table.
Unfortunately, most perfume contains toxic ingredients.

Juicy Couture. I knew I smelled good when an 18 y/o kid at Starbucks asked what perfume it was so he could buy it for his girlfriend. I always get great comments when I have it on. =)

I am allergic to all but one perfume. Channel #5. I know, it's expensive, but it never riles my allergies, and so far nobody has ever told me they were offended by it. I have some friends who wear so much of the other perfumes, I can't sit by them at church or other functions w/o getting a severe headache.

I've been wearing the same perfume since I was about 16...
Calvin Klein, "Eternity" and Givenchy, "Amarige". I get complimented on both all the time.
As a gift recently, someone bought me Issey Miyake and I find that to be a beautiful scent, light and refreshing, but I don't love it as much as the above two.

I haven't bought/worn perfume in many years, but when I used to buy perfume forever ago, my favorite was Calyx. I love it because it has a citrus scent, so it is light and fresh as opposed to heavy and overwhelming. Writing about Calyx really makes me miss it!

I have used Skin Musk by Bonnie Bell FOREVER. It's the same scent that Sarah Jessica Parker wears. Even at age 53 I still continue to get stopped and asked what I'm wearing, everyone loves it. It's a light, sweet scent that mixes with your own body chemistry to make it your own. I use the oil mostly, but always keep a bottle of the spray cologne on hand as well for touch ups. The oil lasts all day tho and even smells good on your skin the following morning.

I'm not a consultant, but I do know you can have a Mary Kay person give you a sample of all of their scents and if you don't like the one you buy you can return or exchange it, it doesn't come out of their pocket.

I'm not a floral, or a fruity kind of gal, but I do like a fresh scented perfume. I came across "Falling in Love" by Philosophy a few years ago, and I'm on my 4th bottle. I've never smelled anything like it. It's sweet, clean, and youthful.

I sell Avon - and I really like their body sprays. As for perfumes - it depends on what you like and how much you want to spend. Fergie just launched her new fragrance called "Outspoken". But one of my all time favs is by Coty - Jovan White Musk or Charlie.

Two polar opposites........been wearing them for years...
Chanel #5 - classic, soft, feminine & pretty
Clinique Aromatics Elixer. Very strong - spicy & warm, a little goes a long way, and it lasts and lasts... I put it on on the morning, and I can't smell it at all. Mailmen on the street have stopped me to ask me what it is, the guy @ Home Depot cutting my blinds asked me several times and then gave me his phone # even though I had told him that I was buying black out blinds to put behind my mini blinds because my fiance was coming to town and had a migraine! Definately try a little and wear it all day though. Years ago - a friend of mine went out and bought it because she loved it so much - when I was over - her kids were all over me telling me how great I smelled. She was really upset because they told her that when she wore it - it smelled like Raid!

My absolute favorite perfume is Abercrombie 8. I have not bought it in a couple of years now, but it is wonderful. It is very light but it stays with you all day. I also like Cool Water for women. Ralph Lauren Blue is really nice too. ( I do not like strong floral scents therefore i stick to the light mellow smells.) I hope this helps.

I hate the perfume departments too, it is very overwhelming! Keep in mind though, that what smells divine on one person will not necessarily smell the same on another, because our individual body chemistry reacts with the scent and changes it. One thing you might try is having a scent created for you. There are shops out there where they will work with your preferences and mix different fragrances and essential oils for your own unique scent. Otherwise, it would probably help if you could gather up a whole bunch of samples, and wear them each for a day or so to see which ones you like the best. Once you know the basics of your favorites (floral, musk, fruity, etc.) you can look for those notes in newer perfumes to help you make a decision. One other tip, carry some coffee beans with you when shopping for a fragrance, and take a sniff to refresh your sense of smell in between smelling different perfumes.

i go for the all natural ingredient (or so it was last i looked, years ago) old classic
Aqua di Parma.
Katherine Hepburn has worn it, i think her daughter did too. It smells great on me. It changes throughout the day and my level of activity. i love its lingering, delicate scent late night during yoga on my skin, when i've put it on in the morning. It is a fresh, heady scent, but still sensual. Not really a perfume. But an Eau de Cologne. Aqua di Parma has a perfume -- but i never spent the money on it (though it smells gorgeous).
ultimately, a good perfume needs to be tried on for a day. Good ones smell different on each person.
good luck!
