H.W.
I second Vanity Fair. They have a good variety of nice fashion spreads and the articles are very well written. I rarely buy it but generally read most of it when I do.
When I was younger it was Seventeen, then Cosmopolitan, then Glamour. Although Glamour's website says its target audience is women 18-49 - I am early 40s and feel like I am a bit too old for it. Still want some sort of a fashion type magazine - not looking for Good Housekeeping or Real Simple. Any ideas? What is after Glamour? Thanks!

I'm 48 and still love Vogue. Vanity Fair is pretty good too. I like these because in addition to all the beautiful photography and fashion there's usually at least a few well written articles/essays about interesting people, art/music, politics, travel, world news, etc.
I always liked InStyle.
In Style??? It can be somewhat trendy but I've never regretted paging through it. :-)
More. Then Instyle and Oprah.
I don't read magazines anymore (perhaps I should as I'm feeling rather unstylish) but this article mentions some good ones for women over 40:

Didn't it used to be Redbook? Does that even exist anymore? I don't do magazines much since I was about 30. LOL
Until a couple months ago, I would have said More magazine. It was targeted to women in their mid-30s+. Loved it! Unfortunately, it went out of business. I haven't found anything else like it.
I've had a People for years due to my marketing job. I like it.
I have Cosmo that I like as well and I'm not in my 40's, I'm 50's.
In style and Vogue are fun.
I'm in the Dallas area so we have a few local magazines as well that feature fashion articles and ideas.
I stopped buying magazines when the perfume ads stunk up the entire house and I couldn't breath.
I know this is of little help.
I am not much of a magazine reader, much less fashion magazines, but I am aware of their existence. How about Harper's Bazaar, Shape, Us, People, Vogue, or InTouch?
My vote would be for Oprah, Vogue, and InStyle.
I don't do magazines any longer though. I just pick them up and flip through at the checkout line. If I come across a recipe or article of interest, then I buy it but that is rare they cost alot of money only to end up in the garbage. LOL.
I only buy a magazine if the cover is a story that I want to read. How about not going with any one magazine and just buy whichever has the best cover (story) each month.
I like Marie Claire. Like the other magazines you mentioned, they have the fashion/beauty in there but some more thoughtful articles too.
I never really got into any of the magazines.
I looked at Southern Living for awhile but lost interest in it.
For me, the 'next' one would be AARP The Magazine.
I still read Cosmo, but I tend to flip past all of the makeup, beauty, fashion, and dating stuff. I got a free subscription to Women's Day and just looked through the first one in the past few days. I consciously thought to myself, "wow...I think I've grown up or something", because I really enjoyed it. I'm 32 and not a girly-girl.
I'm not really into fashion magazines anymore - but I read them at my hair stylist's - Vanity Fair is one I pick up there to browse through.
If I'm vacationing (only time I'll buy a magazine for beach) I'll get an InStyle.
Oprah if I feel like being inspired.
People type magazine if I want to veg.
