Oreck !!!! weve gone though like 10 vacuums before we purchased a Oreck and we`ve had it for almost 7 years !
It`s a light vacume and I do say it does the JOB !
I need to buy a new vacuum. I have carpeted stairs and am wondering what vacuum would be good around the house and stairs. My last one was terrible on the stairs. I have never had a canister vacuum, not sure how good they are.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Thanks, J.

Loved my oreck - very lightwieght and strong.
Our company details homes throughout Atlanta. We have found that a good stiff brush is fast and effective in cleaning stair treads. Start at the top and brush the tops and back of treads, working your way down. Everything that ends up on the floor at the bottom of the stairs is then vacuumed up. Brushing gets deep into the pile, removing dust, dirt, hair, lint and pulls out loose fiber. It also allows the pile to stand up again and prevents "stuff" from staying forever in the tight places that a vacuum will not reach. The stairs look like they have just been shampooed. An inexpensive stiff brush with a handle is good and cost about 2.00. You can also find long very narrow brushes. This is easy on the back and very fast.
I have heard that a Kirby is wonderful. I know that they are costly, but if you are willing to spend the money they can be used for multiple needs around the house.
I have a Kirby! Was worth the price - excellent on stairs (a bit heavy, though)- great warranty, shampooer included. Before that I had a Bissell Windtunnel - loved it too!
I would go to the local vacuum shops, that repair them also, and ask for recommendations. Try them out, pick them up. I used canisters for 28 years, the first one lasted 24 years, the next one less than 3! Check brands, etc. online. I loved my canister. Sad that it is not working, already replaced the motor once (never vacuum up water off the floor, even a little bit!)
I have the same problem as you. I got a canister because of the stairs. It works get on the stairs but I hate it for the rest of the house. I hate havingto PULL it along and it bumps up against the walls and chips the corners! I hope to read a solution from your responses.
