What Is the Best Breast Pump?

Medela, hands down! I used it with all of my children. I have the Pump In Style and it is great! I have taken it on trips, used it in the car, etc. I heard rave reviews while pregnant, thought it might be too expensive, but know now that it is a worthwhile investment!

I used the Medela pump-in-style while working and nursing both of mine and it was great. I bought it used and never had a problem. All the parts can be sterilized.
There are some online guides on choosing the pump that's right for you. You can rent a hospital-grade pump to bring home from the hospital with you. I think they are around $50/month. Since you won't know what your need are ahead of time, I'd suggest renting for the first month, then make your decision once you know what your nursing needs are.
Good for you for considering nursing! I did not really think it's something I would have wanted to do, but it was a good experience with both of my children and I'm glad we did it. I would highly suggest a breastfeeding class (usually offered along with prepared childbirth classes). My friends who took the class had a much easier time getting started.

I used Medela pump in style with all three of my kids. I absolutely loved it. They are around $220-$250 but well worth it.

I went with Ameda electric double pump (under $150 when I got it). It worked great for my kids and me. No issues with it like back flow which I heard can happen with medela. But I never user the medela ($$) so I can't say.

the best and only way to go is Medela. You can not go wrong. I use the pump in stlye by Medela. Does not hurt you and very easy to use.

I used the Medela Pump 'N Style. It worked very well for both kids and traveled well.

I loved my Avent manual pump. It was about $50 & I got to where I could put it together in the dark. It wasn't too fancy, but JUST RIGHT & easy & comfortable & FAST. I didn't need to be able to strap it on while I finished typing a report (ha! ha! So no need for an expensive electric)- A truly great value w/ lots of fan reviews out on line.

Stay away from the hands free pump. I tried it with my 2nd child, thinking it would be good to have my hands free, plus I work from home so it sounded like a good idea. I had a hard time getting it positioned just right and spent 20-30 minutes at a time adjusting it. So I ended up getting an electric pump (medela) from target. I got the double pump b/c I was pumping 3 times a day while my son was at day care. My son couldn't break down milk protine so I was in it for the long haul (1 year), but I'm really glad we had that option and I missed nursing once it was over. Congrats on the new addition!

It depends on how you plan using it....if you will be pumping full time, you will want to go with an electric pump. If only occasionally, a manual pump will work fine. I used the Avent manual pump with my 2nd baby and loved it! I had used a battery operated pump with my 1st and had a hard time getting my milk to let down with it. The Avent was very easy to use, my milk let down quickly, and since you are the one pumping, you can pump it out fast or slow to meet your comfort level.

I am a lactation consultant and I truly second the opinion that the Medela Pump n Style is the way to go. It is the only pump that I sell because I have had such good success with it.
The one at Target for $250 is the original and as suggested here it really will take you thru 2 or even 3 kids, great motor and pump. The Advanced for $350 is better due to something called dual phase. It mimics the babys sucking pattern with a push button that can change it from the rapid to long slow pull and it will automatically change in 2 minutes for you without readjustment. Medela has a hands free connection and I also have an Easy Expression Bra that really is hands free comfortably and it just zips up over your bra for pumping at work or any time you want your hands free while pumping. It is great for feeding baby and pumping at the same time, saving you time and work.
By the way, I sell them at The Nestingplace in Grapevine for less than target and tax free with a prescription from your Dr.

I agree with a breastfeeding class. Many people can avoid the consultation fee's by taking a class before delivery so that you know all of the how's why's and what not to do's. It really gives you a good perspective on what to buy before baby also to make your life easier. We teach these 2 times monthly one weekday and one weekend and the classes are 4 hours long so that you are truly prepared.

Ameda Purely Yours- no issues w/ breastmilk flowing into the motor- it is a closed connection unlike Madela. I used it to exclusively pump- for 8 months. Easy to set up, comes with a back pack bag- I used it at work. Get a pumping bra also- this helped me be hands free when I needed to pump and care for the baby or do work. Good luck- YOU CAN DO IT!! I wanted to give up sooo many times- but hang in there it is the best.

HONESTLY the BEST pump is MEDELA!!!! I bought one for 300.00 when my first was born(feb 2001) and it feels just like the baby is nursing no sore nipples NO PROBLEMS!!! I used it for both of my other 2 babies also NO PROBLEMS!! I loaned it to my sister-in-law she LOVED it & had NO problems!!! Now one of my friends had a baby 1 month ago & I've given it to her!!! SHE LOVES IT TOOO!!!!!!

It is the one in the black leather case that you can pump one side or both sides & it has 3 freezer pkgs with it & one side of the case is made for up to 4 4oz bottles of pumped milk & the freezer packs to keep it all good untill you freeze the milk or put it in the fridge for using in the next 24 hrs!!!!!

Hi Y.. My name is E. and I went through an awful time just about 2 months ago. I just had my 3rd baby and went through depressiion when he wasn't getting enough milk. I talked to the Lactation Consultants over and over again. They suggest the Medela (which is the most exensive), or the Purely Yours (also called Lansinoh--and the price isn't too bad)--I really don't remember the other one, but it was another kind of expensive one. They said not to get the Playtex, Evenflo, First Years, (basically, the cheaper ones) because they tear up your breasts. I got the Lansinoh double electric pump, and I only paid $150. at Wal-Mart. Any more questions, let me know, or (Idon't know where you live, but I called Harris HEB Breast Feeding Center. They are AWESOME!!!

I used the Medela Pump 'n Style when I exclusively pumped for my son for 11 months (he wasn't able to nurse). Overall, I would recommend it highly. It cost $220 and has been very reliable. I have used it again with my 2nd child, although not as much, as I was able to nurse. I hope it works out for you!

I breastfed both my children, now 5 and 2 and worked full time. I work for a pediatric group practice that highly recommends breastfeeding, so good for you for making this decision to breast feed. I highly recommend the Medela pump as well. It is well worth spending the money for it. Good luck!

Oh!! Here is some very useful advice to avoid sore nipples, starting from about your 6th month of pregnancy, apply Lanolin to your nipples and continue using all while breastfeeding. You can find the Lanolin in the baby section at Target or Walmart.
