My father taught me never to hang things from the mirror because they are distracting to the driver, so I've never hung anything.
I made a comment to my husband the other day about how it seems most people have something hanging from their rearview mirror. I wonder how many hold meaning and how many are random? I have a glass bead a dear friend who has passed used to wear on a hemp necklace I had made him. Now it hangs from some thread and I love how it reminds me of him in a positive way.
So, do you hang something from yours? And, if so, does it have meaning?

Well...I have a little stuffed mouse hanging from my RVM and a stuffed cat sitting on my dash looking at it. For some reason, it strikes me as hysterical every time I get in the car. I used to just have the mouse...they are my favorites. Then hubby bought me the stuffed cat because he hates cats and I miss having one. So as a joke, he "bought" me a cat. So I said I was going to keep it in my car. Then I saw my mouse hanging there and put the cat on the dash and it looks like its stalking the mouse. Anyway, funny. I had a cross hanging on the RVM for years and years. =)
Currently we have a dog collar hanging from our rearview mirror. Our first dog got sick when she was not even 3 years old and we had to put her down. We walked out of our vet with her collar/tags and hung them on the rearview mirror and that is where they have been ever since.
Cool story though...We got a new puppy last May. And as we were turning the corner to go to my husband's parents' house to introduce him, Kona's (first dog) collar "jumped" off of the rearview mirror. Seriously, it takes some maneuvering to get it off, so for it to just "fall off" is weird. It has happened a few times! Or her tags will jingle randomly when the car is not moving. Whenever something like that happens, we always say, "Hi Kona! We still love you and miss you!" :-)
In my old car, I used to have a piece of yarn "artwork" I made. I was going through a hard time and was talking to a friend of mine who is an art therapist. My conversation with her motivated me to dig out yarn from my basement craft area and create what I was feeling. It looked like a big jumbled mess of yarn, but it REALLY had meaning to me. I hung it on my rearview mirror to remind me of what I have been through and how far I have come. I also liked the "symbolism" of it being on my rearview mirror because anything that you see in your rearview mirror is "already passed" or "behind you". So...yeah :-) If something makes it onto my rearview mirror, it means it meant a lot to me :-)
a glow-in-the-dark rosary. It's plastic & tacky, but I love it.
a silver chain with 3 charms on it....2 boys (for my sons) + 1 angel G. (for our daughter who passed away so many years ago). Having an angel G. for our daughter reminds me to include her in my thoughts with each family event. :)
& there's usually a Poppy (which fundraiser is that? Drawing a blank here....?Veterans?) hanging from all of it.
Drives my husband & my older son nuts....but, tough! It's my vehicle!
We have a turtle air freshener, it was really bought for the turtle as that is what we called my son that passed. I dont think it ever smelled and it really doesnt now.
A Rosary - yep, reminds me to pray, and to be a patient driver so that I don't act like a jerk ;-)
Not to rain on anyone's parade but in many states, it's illegal to hang objects from your rearview mirror as they can distract the driver and obstruct his or her view. This is a ticketable offense. When I was younger I had my high school gradution tassel on the car that I drove when I graduated but since getting rid of that car, I haven't put anything else up in any new cars.
We have nothing hanging from it.
Hubby doesn't like do-dads hanging from it.
But here culturally, locals often hang a lei, from it. From a special occasion etc.
I have a shamrock. I'm Irish. It's not special, just like it. When I got it, I had a very popular car and it made it easy to find mine. Now it's just stuck with me ever since. Funny thing, it was a $2 air freshener that I bought.
No because it is illegal.
A beaded lanyard for sun glasses. The sun glasses are in the pocket above the rear view mirror. No special meaning; just a handy place for the glasses and lanyard.
My parking tag for the university.
Season Passes for the mountains.
Because we leave at oh-dark-thirty in the morning
And I hate forgetting the suckers
I used to have purple fuzzy dice. It was awesome, but the windshield in my new car is smaller and the dice were too big. Now I have a couple of strands of Mardi Gras beads from a work thing a couple of years ago. I hang my garage door opener on them. Sometimes I'll hang my ID badge on there. Nothing meaningful.
A seasonal pass for Manitoba's Provincial Parks. It gets unlimited access to all 55 provincial parks in Manitoba so its pretty special to me!
i have a leather rose that my hubby got me when we were dating.
i also have a smiley face ball with an angels baseball helmet on it.
thats about it.
many blessings
It's illegal in Illinois. A friend got stopped for speeding and also got a ticket for her windshield being obstructed because she had a lanyard hanging on hers.
That being said, I'm taking my chances because I have a tiny silk bouquet of flowers hanging from mine, and also my work badge when I'm not wearing it. If I get a ticket, I guess I get a ticket. So far I've been lucky.
Thankfully, whilst I have heard that it is illegal in Illinois, the few tickets I have gotten for other things have not included a ticket for having something hanging on my RVM. I currently have a small stuffed Schnauzer keychain my dad gave me a few years ago-I've never had a Schnauzer but I love all dogs. My dad saw the keychain and thought of me-one of those things that made me feel loved so its a nice thing to remember when I am in the car. I also have a glow in the dark Shamrock stone bought by my mom in Guatemala- it is supposedly good luck, but I mostly have it there because it is from my mom =)
I have a beaded cross necklace that my 8 y/o bought me hanging from my rearview mirror.
I have a necklace my son made for me. It was a project from an after school program, they said the kids could make anything they wanted and for anyone they chose. He chose ME. woohoo! :)
I love it with all my heart.
Nope. Nothing hangs there. I find such things to be a distraction behind the wheel.
Now if you want to ask what hangs from the gearshift (manual transmission) that would be another story....
Echoing what others have said, Nothing because I've always heard that it is illegal.
It would probably also annoy me because when it snows I need to clear that ridge of snow off the side of the window that the wipers push there. Otherwise it annoys me because I feel like I am missing something ;-)
I see a lot of people with handcuffs hanging from their RVM, but I'd think if you had to brake hard, the handcuffs would slam against the glass and shatter it, so I don't think that's such a good idea. I have a suncatcher, it's a pretty chain, a bit on the long side, with a small pewter fairy (I love pewter AND fairies), and it has some little glass beads on the bottom part that when the sun shines, create beautiful rainbows inside my car, around the passenger seat. My daughter loves it. It reminds passengers of a disco ball throwing off reflections, and my daughter thinks it looks like there are rainbows everywhere.
