My 15 month old son is a happy healthy guy, except that when he gets a diaper rash it typically lasts for 2 weeks and I hate to see him so uncomfortable. He's had a couple rounds of it so far, the last one being in July and again now.
I have a few questions:
- Do other people have similar experiences with no rash at all for months but the it'll pop up again on a somewhat regular basis?
- How do you treat it? So far we've had to use a Rx each time
- Did you ever figure out what causes it?
I have a food intolerance and I suspect that my son might also but traditional allergy tests have all come back normal. We also track what he eats but I can't find a pattern. I had a Meridian Stress test done on myself years ago but my person is no longer practicing.
Any advise from other moms would be appreciated.
Before the money is spent of triple paste, which I know works, try BUTTPASTE!!! It is the best! Found at target, walmart, etc..
My son was getting a rash every few days until I changed the brand of diapers. He was using Pampers Cruisers and I was reading that some babies are allergic to the scent and other things in them. I changed to Seventh Generation diapers (bleach and scent free) and he is fine now. It took a few weeks for the rash to totally clear, but it's gone now. Good luck!
my son gets a diaper rash, well... i should say that the area around his anus looks raw and inflammed... it's not a wide spread rash about an inch in diameter - after eating certain foods. Strawberries are a big culprit for him. allergy? i dunno... sensitivity? probably. but we've cut out strawberries and he still gets it every once in a while.
we use A&D overnight relief. it's thick and sticks very well. it does smell a little fishy to me though, i think they use a fish oil in it.
Here's my tip... don't work real hard to get ALL of the ointment off at each diaper change. unless it's soiled, obviously. but if a little remains, leave it on... it's still working. layer more on top. the overnight creams will do this, so will triple paste, but if your ointment wipes off easily, it's not a 'heavy duty' ointment.

You didn't mention but do you use a diaper cream after every change? We found that by using A&D (the regular kind that looks like thick yellow vaseline) after every change really cut down on outbreaks. After wiping the baby's bum we would fan or blow on it until it was dry then put on the A&D ointment. We looked pretty strange blowing on our kid's butt although she thought it was fun. At the first sign of redness we would use one of those white creams with zinc, and it would clear right up. I never liked those long term as you really can't clean it off. Our girls never got a bad rash. Except for one really bad rash----in both cases it was after antibiotics. When we adopted our youngest at 11 months we were told she kept getting recurrent diaper rashes. She had a RX cream for diaper rash at the time...I took one look and knew it was a yeast infection not just a regular old diaper rash. And yes, in babies it is on the butt not on in the vaginal area like grownups. The treatments had been working off and on but not killing the yeast infection so it would just flare up when her defenses were down. Our ped used a diaper cream for a yeast infection and it was cleared up in a week, NEVER to return.
We use a thin layer of Lotrimin Anti fungal 3x a day under a thick layer of desitin original formula with the white and purple label and we give probiotics orally (the acidopholous and other strains of live cultures that are in yoghurt in a powder form). They sell it at Whole Foods. We used Nature's Way brand. My pediatrician also suggested Flora Jen brand. Probiotics are very important...especially if your son has taken antibiotics.
A few times my son was so uncomfortable that I tried something I read on the Internet....dabbing on Mylanta antacid liquid...letting it dry. Then doing the lotrimin and the desitin original. It helped.
When he's dirty and I can't wipe it off because it hurts, I give him a bath instead, without soap or using Aveeno unscented baby wash. Then I let him run around naked (or with a shirt only) so that it airs out.
Hopefully your son is all better by now and you no longer need these suggestions.

All I can say is SUPER DUPER DIAPER DOO! I know it sounds crazy, but my son broke out once with a rash sooo bad that nothing would work and I felt so bad for him. Someone had given me a tube of this stuff and after trying absolutely everything else....I gave it a shot! The rash was gone in two days! The only down side is, you can only get it online. I remember when my daughter was an infant, I would mix regular Malox (not mint or whatever) with creamy Desitin. Always seemed to work when her little rear was fire engine red.

J.-He is having a reaction to the DIAPERS!!! He may have allergies but it is not most common foods. dairy would be the main one. Diapers are treated with pesticides, bleach and other very toxic chemicals. Try tushies or seventh generation-chemical and bleach free.
Diapers.com and go with an all natural diaper rash ointment-olive or coconut oil work great.

At the first sign of diaper rash, we slather on the Triple Paste and it is gone usually within a day. Yes, Triple Paste is expensive but it works.
Change his diaper more frequently during the rash time and load up on the cream overnight.
Hi J.. My son gets bad diaper rashes every few months (he has one clearing up right now!), while my daughter really never gets them. They both eat and drink the exact same foods and wear the same diapers, so I don't really know what causes it. I assume they simply have different skin sensitivity types.
I agree with the poster about considering different diapers if the ones you use are scented. (We use Kirkland diapers and wipes for both kids.) Other than that, the method my Pediatrician gave me when he was an infant helps me clear his rash up in 2 days:
1) When the rash is severe, eliminate all wiping and all use of the baby wipes. There is too much acidic content in wipes and it will aggravate the rash. Take him to the sink or tub and rinse him off. For anything that does not get pushed off by the water, very gently dab with a very soft cloth. No wiping whatsoever.
2) Use "Lotrimin AF" (anti-fungal cream) 2-3 diaper changes a day...at least one of the "overnight" diapers (if there are overnight diaper changes). This can be purchased at Target, or Walmart in the athlete's foot product area.
3) Use "Triple Paste" diaper cream all other diaper changes. My Pediatrician specified this brand over every other diaper cream, including Desitin, Butt Paste, etc. It really is the best. You can find it at Target or CVS.
Every night, even when they don't have rashes, we slather our kids up with Triple Paste for their bedtime diaper. It is great protection. Good luck!!
Our pediatrician gave us a prescription for Vusion that worked wonders in less than one day.
I think avoiding foods with citric acid helps. Also unscented wipes and soap. Have you tried aquaphor for the rash area? All of these things worked for my daughter
It's hard to see our little ones suffer with rashes or anything. Don't know if citrus or other acidic foods are causing this, but prescription creams typically have ingredients that you really don't want to be putting on your child. I can tell you about a natural line of product that has a great baby wash, oil, diaper cream and body lotion with all soothing ingredients that are all safe and botanically based. Don't use anything with mineral oil in it or Vaseline!
