My one year old son has had diaper rash for about two weeks and I can't get it to clear up(This is really the first time he has had diaper rash this bad). I usually use Desitin, but even that isn't working. I have tried Johnson's 3 and 1 diaper cream, my mom suggested corn starch and I have tried baby powder as well. I know I haven't exhausted the diaper rash cream options, but before I go out and buy a dozen of them to try, I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to what might help clear up his diaper rash?
Thanks everyone for all the advice and suggestions!! I was grateful that everyone responded so quickly! I didn't take my little boy to the doctor like some of you suggested, but after reading your responses, researching a little and talking to a friend of mine, I am pretty sure that he has a yeast related rash. Several of you suggested using an athletes foot cream, so I did. I noticed a definite difference the next day. The rash is not totally gone yet, but almost (I am not sure how long a yeast infection takes to clear up )and if it does not clear up in the next couple of days I will call his doc and talk to the nurse to see what she thinks. Again thanks for the responses.

Both of my children were always getting diaper rashes because of their sensitive skin. I can tell you that "Triple Paste" works miracles! It's a medicated diaper ointment and clear rashes almost overnight! Its costs more than regular ointment but is well worth it. You can find it at any pharmacy like Walgreens and my local Target just started carrying it. Hope this also helps!

I have had a lot of luck with putting a few tablespoons of baking soda in the bath water. This also helps with eczema. Also just plain old corn starch is great. I do agree with one of the other responses that it could be a yeast rash. Ask your doc.

Definite yeast, watch out for milk and nut allergies, surprisingly even eating too many bananas (or one specific fruit) can cause a severe diaper rash, limit sugar intake-no juice. Use diaper cream with no mineral oil in it, try Hylands Diaper Ointment, it's homeopathic. Meanwhile until it clears switch the diaper cloths to Seventh Generation unbleached. Don't use cornstarch or baby powder, it's not good for them. Good luck

Hi! OMG, I recently had to battle a very persistent diaper rash in my newborn baby girl. i'm not new to diapers either - she's #4. it was seriously a month, and her skin was raw, and wet constantly because it was like an open sore :( my poor baby :(
we used triple paste. it's expensive... it was the ONLY one i had not tried... I used it and seriously the next day, it was almost completely gone. i know it sounds crazy,... but this stuff is miraculous!!
Now I have a whole stash of tubes... Butt Paste, Bottom Butter, Johnsons, Aveeno, you name it - we got it :)
Triple Paste - its worth it :)

There is a product called Bordeaux's Butt Cream. (sold at Target and Walmart) Funny name but it WORKS! It is very thick and if you use it generously and regularly, it will clear it up. Two other things you can try (If you have the time and availability) are to let him soak in a bath with some baking soda mixed in. Don't fill the tub very much and put the baking soda in and stir it up. Last resort, if you can stand it....let him go without a diaper or ANY clothing on the bottom for even a half an hour at a time. The more chance it has to air out the more likely it will go away~! Hope this helps!

You have gotten some AWESOME responses. I hear that baking soda in the bath water works wonders. I have used the following creams that have actually worked:
1. If it is yeast, I use lotrim AF and then top that off with A & D, not the cream, the petroleum jelly type.
2. California Baby Diaper Cream, it is all natural and it smells good... this was the only thing that cleared up her diaper rash last month. You can purchase it at Target...
http://www.californiababy.com/
3. Triple paste - the ped recommended this and it does work, but it is really thick, I just love the California Baby Diaper Cream. http://www.triplepaste.com/

First question you need to find out is if it's a normal rash, or an allergy or fungus? If it's just a bad rash, you might try liquid antacids, a doctor actually suggested that for one of the babies in the daycare i used to work at. But once again, couldn't hurt to have him checked out to see why he's got this rash.

We had a similar situation. I don't think I saw this suggestion below (all great advice).
My son had a bad rash (BAD and for WEEKS)not long after having the flu and bad diarhea...our nanny suggested cutting out dairy for a couple days. The very first day his butt cleared up - it was amzaing. Her theory is the cultures in the dairy keep the bacteria growing and irritatiing his butt. I gave him Soy Milk (he started on milk at around 11 months) which he loved. Good luck. If it persists after you've tried all the suggestions, I would check with your doc in case it is a yeast infection or something you can't remidy at home. I also highly recommend the TRIPLE PASTE - it's awesome!

Hi C.,
I have found that the best diaper rash cream for a really bad rash is Triple Paste. It is kind of expensive, $17.99 for a 10 oz tub at Target, but it works great. Also, make sure the skin is completely dry before putting the paste on.
The only concern is that your son may actually have a yeast infection, so if it is really raw, take him to the doctor because you may need a prescription ointment.
Good luck!

My daughther had a diaper rash that wouldn't go away and then I called the doctor and realized that it was because of yeast. I had the same problem a couple of times with my daughter when she was a baby and with my son, both of whom have the same very sensitive skin. My pediatrician told me not to ever use powder, especially on a rash, so I stopped with my daughter and never have used it with my twins. Anyway, he told me to use Bacitracin when Desitin (which normally works for me) doesn't do the trick within 48 hours - it's one of the 3 topical antibiotics in Neosporin. I just get the Target brand, and it's in the first aid section. He suggested letting them go naked for awhile (which is always a risk!), especially after baths to make sure their skin is dry before putting on a diaper. He said that if there was no noticeable improvement within 24 hours of using the bacitracin, to come in because it could be a fungal or yeast infection. With both kids, though, the bacitracin did the trick every time and the results were almost immediate. Good luck!

Has your baby had inoculations lately? My first daughter was allergic to smallpox vaccine (she's 43 now) which we didn't figure out until she was 5 and had a booster shot. She also broke out with eczema every time one of her siblings got their smallpox shot!
Have you changed disposable diaper brands? One of my granddaughters was highly allergic to Pampers, but tolerated the house brand of Jewel very well. Go figure.

I am going through this right now with my daughter. We tried literally everything. I probably used 10 different things on her bottom to try and clear her up, but everything seemed to just make it worse. Butt Paste, Desitin, Balmex, pure zinc oxide...you name it...I even tried a prescription cream from the doctor. Here's what finally, worked. Goto the drugstore and ask for Paladin cream (it comes in a little pink & white jar). I went to Walgreens & they had it behind the pharmacy counter. Anyway, I slathered that on, pretty thick (I used a whole jar in like 3 days) and then added 1/2% cortisone cream on top. I started doing that on Wednesday evening, and by last night her rash was almost completely gone. It was amazing how well it worked. Hope it works as well for you. Keep me updated.
Something else that really helps....after he's had a BM, give him a bath and let him just sit in the water for a little bit (this will get the bacteria off his bottom better than the wet wipes). Then, just let his bottom air dry. We bought a rubber sheet and just throw a little blanket on it and let my daughter play on that completely naked for a little bit. Allowing air to get to her bottom seems to help dry up the rash, too.

Hi there-
You have gotten quite a few responses already but I thought that I would add my .02 too. I am so proud. My daughter is my second and last and I finally figured out this diaper rash stuff. I now can clear any rash she has overnight. Yay!
1. If it is a fungus and has bumps, I use Lotrim AF on all of her diapers that day and at night. By morning, it will be mostly gone.
2. If it is an Acidic Rash...the kind that burns the baby's butt. Then I use the Butt Paste...I forget who makes it but it is literally called Butt Paste and it's brown and nasty. I hate the stuff but it works wonders. http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/601-###-###-####-###...
3. I have another cream that is Pink and is literally called Pinxav. I am not suggesting that you buy it on Ebay...this is just the first thing that came up. This stuff is awesome and smells great. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=36...

Poor baby! Isn't it awful to see how quickly a diaper rash can become severe? We had to take my son to the Pediatrician when he was a newborn, due to the severity. Here's what my Pediatrician instructed me to do:
1) Eliminate all wiping and all use of the baby wipes. There is too much acidic content in wipes and it will aggravate the rash. Instead, use a squirt bottle with warm water and squirt the fecal matter off his skin into the sink. Anything that does not get pushed off by the water, very gently dab with a very soft cloth. No wiping whatsoever.
2) Use "Lotrimin AF" (anti-fungal cream) 2-3 diaper changes a day...at least one of the "overnight" diapers (if there are overnight diaper changes). This can be purchased at Target, Walmart in the athlete's foot product area.
3) Use "Triple Paste" diaper cream all other diaper changes. My Pediatrician specified this brand over every other diaper cream, including Desitin, Butt Paste, etc. It really is the best.
If the rash begin to blister and bleed, I would call the Pediatrician. I sure hope it clears up very soon!!

My daughter experienced really bad diaper rash a few months ago. I took her to the doc....her bowel movements were really acidic, so they advised me to buy some Milk of Magnesia and mix it in with Overnight Relief Destin. That definetly helped...although it was wierd. Aveeno also has a product that you add to the bath water. It was always soothing to her. I did a lot of "naked time" to air the rash out. Not sure why your son has the rash, but for my daughter is was a combo of diet change (I was transitioning her from breast milk to formula) and I think she had a bit of the stomach flu. I also had to switch her from reg. formula to gentlease so it was more gentle. Has your son has anything new in his diet? Just a thought...good luck.

If the rash is this persistent, and you've tried so many different creams already... I'd suggest taking your little guy to the doctor's and make sure it's not a fungal or yeast infection. Those are the type of infections that can last for more than a few days, don't clear up with typical creams, and are extremely irritating to the baby's bottom. A pediatrician can write a script for something to clear it up!
If you want to try something you haven't, and I saw others recommended it, Budreau's Butt Paste worked wonders for us! You can usually find it at Walmart or Target. I remember just laughing at the name of the product in the store while I was pregnant, and a mom with a cart full of little ones said, "Laugh now! Wow have you gotten a ton of advice!
In my experience I have tried them all also... I have found the one that works the best is the Lotrimin. I am not sure why she gets the fungal infections (and they seem to come on fast) but it clears it right up. She would go from healthy skin to bleeding/blistered sometimes too, to just red to cleared up within 24 hours. Since we were getting them about once a month I stopped using all other things until a problem happened. I asked my DR to re-prescribe what she was given in the hospital and she told me to go and buy the Lotrimin instead.... I was very iffy but figured it was worth it and sure enough...It worked! I have since thrown out the Desitin, the baby talc, the Boudreux Butt Paste(that was my favorite before) and about $50 worth of other creams, ointments and pastes! lol
If you do not notice an improvement you will want to get an appt with your DR... I also try to avoid acidic foods since I know that will sometimes cause it. I do not give orange juice and tomatoe sauces I use very lightly on her pasta for flavor only! Check to see if there is some major diet changes since this started.
Good luck and blessings to you and yours!
