What Do You and Your Family Do on the Weekends???

Our family consists of me, my husband, and my almost-three-year-old son. Every weekend we struggle with what we are going to do together. Of course we enjoy just hanging out together, but we all three get bored hanging out in the house playing with toys, reading books, and watching a little T.V. We go out to lunch sometimes (which we are tired of paying for and we are getting fat), go to the tractor store (Lowe's), and do other errands. During the warm months we go to the park.

What do you do with your family on "regular" weekends? I'd love to know!! TIA!!

What can I do next?

Check out www.klty.com they have a family calendar with events, most are free and tons of fun! We usually go to those on Saturdays and then on Sundays we are very active in our church and community. On Sundays we are at church from 8:45am till a little after noon. Come home for lunch which is done in the crock pot and then we are back up at church for bible study from 5:30 - 7:30 pm. Sunday evenings we go downtown and pass out food, blankets, coats, etc to the homeless from around 8:30pm till about 10:30pm.

When it is nice outside we go to the park, zoos, botanic gardens in Ft. Worth, state parks, etc. When it's cold, we go to the Dallas Aquarium, Children's Museum in Dallas(they have a great area for children under 5), we go to the mall and have lunch at the food court and let the kids ride those little coin operated cars, the Stonebriar Center has an indoor merry go round, bowling(with bumpers) is fun, movies.

movies, try to set up playdates. I live in Arlington, Tx, my husband and I have no family in the area either. Most of our friends live out of town and not in the vicinity. My husband and I are 37-38. I completely understand what ur talking about. I have a 3 year old son also. Maybe we can meet. S. G

we get 'cabin fever', too, so here are a few ideas off the top of my head... we go to the children's museum, barnes & noble, ride the trinity train in warmer weather, and then have a picnic at the park, go to a movie, wash the car, make healthy snacks for the upcoming week together, crafts, take our dog to the dog park, walk around the stockyards or the mall or costco or pet store, go to a toy store just to look and play, the botanic gardens. our dc love to do science experiments with us. we are all under the weather this weekend, so today we built a fire and are going to make a pizza. yesterday the kids had fun playing in the bathtub...we got out some shaving cream and added a few drops of food coloring and they 'painted' in the tub. then we showered them down. easy and fun.

We are basically the same... My husband, my 2.5 year old daughter, and myself. We are in Coppell, so we are fairly close to where you are.

I normally check the Family E-Guide (http://familyeguide.com) and the Parents Connect site (http://gocitykids.parentsconnect.com/calendar/dallas-tx-u...) to see if there is anything fun for the weekend. We do spend a lot of time at Toys R Us, Petsmart, or Home Depot since they are close in Irving. One of my daughter's favorites is going to the Frisco mall to ride the carousel and go to Barnes and Noble.

It's really funny you asked this question today since I was on the same thought process. We had a lazy Sunday and I get cabin fever easily. :-P

Jessica,
When our boys were little we enjoyed going on walks or bike riding.
On Sundays, we go to church. You might meet other families there with children the same age to do things with on Saturdays.

When my oldest son was that age, he loved to have movie parties and game parties. For a movie party, we'd get comfy in sleeping bags, pillows, bean bag chairs . . . whatever he wanted. We'd turn off the lights and pop popcorn and we'd all watch a movie he picked. For game parties, we'd make a fun snack of some kind and play games. If your son is almost 3, there are lots of games he can play now! At that age, my son loved Hungry Hungry Hippos, Candy Land, Don't Wake Daddy, Hullabaloo to name a few.

Another thing he liked doing was helping around the house with projects. Whether it was painting a room (I gave him a clean paint roller and he would "clean" the wall before I'd get to it), organizing a closet, cleaning the garage, he loved being involved and we got stuff done around the house!

Have you thought about joining somewhere that has an indoor pool? I don't know where you live, but there is a place in Keller and Denton that I know of, but I am sure there are more. Might be fun to go swimming on the weekends, even in the winter. My boys always liked browsing pet stores too. They loved looking at the birds and fish. My boys love to go to Cabela's too. If you haven't been there, kids like it. If he likes movies, now that he is almost 3, you could probably go to the movies with him.

That's all I can think of right now. I remember getting cabin fever on the weekends when my boys were little. Now that they are 5 and almost 8, our weekends usually consist of a sport of some kind. We had baseball for one and soccer for the other kid in the fall. Now, one boy is in basketball, and as soon as that's over, they'll both be in baseball all spring. Now that they are in school, there always seems to be a birthday party, school function, or something else going on. So, our weekends are never relaxing. Enjoy it while you can! We get excited if there is a weekend with nothing to do now!

We like going to the petstore or Bass Pro Grapevine (they have lot's of fun areas to explore, free fishing on Saturdays, special events, etc.).

We're not "shoppers" but the kids loved going to Grapevine Mills at this age. We'd walk around and just "experience" things (listen to music at Virgin Records (I don't know if they're still there), look at the alligator and fish at Rain Forest Cafe (you don't have to eat there), going up and down the ramps, etc.

We also go to the park and the duck pond even in the winter (as long as it's above about 40). It may be a shorter trip that a summertime visit, but still gets the ants out of the pants :)

Here's a section on our website that offers some ideas, too:

Good luck!
