Is it pronounced Ah-lean-nah? or A-Line-A?

I like the name Jane. It's simple. It's NOT ugly. I don't know who would tell you that. That's just rude.

I like the name Ah-lean-nah Jane!! It flows smoothly. Yell it out!! Like you would be calling her in for dinner! :) You'll HEAR it sounds RIGHT!!

If it's pronounced like A-Line-A - would rhyme it with vagina, Carolina...that's just me and listening to my kids when they do the rhyming game. (now, my boys know the correct name - but they haven't used it like that - this is me rhyming in my head).

Hardly any of the respondents here, know how to pronounce "Alinna."
Ah-lee-nah
Ah-lynn-nah
A-lai-nah
Al-line-ah (as in the guy's name "Al.")
Long "a" or short "a" sound?

Jane is not an ugly name.

love Jane for a middle name. But I don't like Alinna. I'm sorry! I know that probably stings but it's kinda a hard name. Like many people have asked how are you pronouncing it? Is she always going to have to go around correcting people? Every time she starts a new grade in school is the teacher going to pronounce her name wrong? Just some things to think about. For example I named my middle daughter Layla. I have a friend with a daughter 4 years older than mine that also named her daughter Leahla. See what I mean? She said people are always calling her daughter Lee-la or Leah for short. She hates it and wishes she would have just spelled it like my daughter's name. So just keep that in mind.

Well... given that you've gotten 27 responses before me and almost everyone says they'd have no idea how to pronounce Alinna... I'd have to say I'm not a fan.

I suspect it will sound pretty no matter how you pronounce it (ah-leen-ah, ah-line-ah, ah-lan-ah, whatever), but your daughter will have to deal with every teacher mispronouncing it, every friend's parents asking her how to spell it, and then in the workforce people will say it wrong too. That's a lot to ask a child (and then an adult) to put up with. Personally, I'd pick something that's a little more mainstream for the first name.

How about Elena? It's probably pronounced about the same, but it's more obvious about how to say. And whichever you choose, I think Jane is a pretty middle name.

How do you pronounce it? Is it "Aleena", "Alihna", or Al-eye-na"?

Be prepared to constantly have to spell the first name for people, pronounce it for them, and to correct people a lot. Same will go for your child. If you're cool with that, then go for it.

Speaking from a person with a foreign name, it gets old REAL fast.

I think that if you are going to have an unusual first name, it's good to balance it with a simple and classic middle name.

Overall I am not a fan of unusually spelled or pronounced names unless they are traditional names in some language or culture. Otherwise, it can be a lifelong burden on the child to have to spell and explain her name her entire life. But Alinna looks pretty on the page. It's up to you whether you think you will have to spell and pronounce it forever.

A more common name similar to Alinnah is Alannah, which gets used more in Britain than here. It's Ah-LAH-nah, not Ah-LAN-nah. You could consider that one too. Alinna could be pronounced ah-LIN-ah or ah-LINE-ah -- where I'm from people likely would use ah-LINE-ah and unless you want that to happen --well, be ready for it and ready to correct folks.

How do you pronounce that name? I ask, because there seems to be this trend. Parents think spelling a name incorrectly, makes it more unique. It doesn't. It's the same name. I'm not saying this to harp on you, or assume that's what you're doing. Just some general advice...spell the name as you want it pronounced. Is her name going to be pronounced ALYNNA? If so, your spelling works. If her name is supposed to be pronounced A-LEE-NA, I would go with a different spelling. Either way, be prepared for people to call her Alaina. I think people fall back on the more common pronunciation of similar names. I did not mean to go on a tangent there, sorry :)

I'm not sure of the pronounciation of Alinna either, I'm using the short I sound for it tho... it's pretty, but will be "alien" to most people for her entire life.... You might want to adjust the spelling or you will fume about the misprounciation for years to come.
Jane, by the way, is a very cute middle name :)

How do you pronounce Alinna, is it like Alyssa, or a long I, like A-line-ah? Either way I love the name Jane, even as a first name!
Just be prepared for the fact that your daughter will probably be correcting peoples' spelling and pronunciation of her name for many years to come so SHE actually may end up resenting the name. Not judging, just something to think about.

I agree-Alinna is tough to pronounce which will mean that every time a teacher calls her name on the first day it will be wrong in addition to all other times where one's name is called. I would peronally say : a LIN a if I had to pronounce it.
JAne is fine for the middle name.

Jane is a very simple name. I think it's great.

What about spelling it: Alynna ?
This way you will see the name "Lynn" in it.

If it's pronounced "a-line-a"... that rhymes w/ a not so nice word; and I would NOT do that.

Personally, I think Alannah is the prettiest !

My daughter's name is Elliana and people say it wrong all the time. It's pronounced just like it's spelled- Elli then ana ( eh l ee ah n uh) but still people mis say it all the time. I assume your spelling is said ah l eh n ah and I think that's very pretty with Jane.
Good luck to you!

I love Jane! I don't know how I would pronounce Alinna? And I think it's cruel to give a kid a name no one will know how spell or say it. I grew up with one of those names. I'd probably guess its Ah-leena? And if it is, I'd spell it with just one n, Alina. I also like Alaina. But Alinna looks like Ah-LIN-ah. Which sounds kinda funny in my opinion, made up? Alaina Jane has the best ring to it, but it matters more how the first name sounds with your last name.

I like both. Spelled "Alynna" she may not get as many mis-pronunciations or misspellings. I like Jane, same as I like "Kate." It's simple, short, and classic, but not overly-heard around town. I think a one-syllable middle name goes great with a two or three-syllable first name.

I like Jane as a middle name, particularly if the first name has 2 or more syllables. A friend of a friend named her daughter Emma Jane. And there is a little girls' clothing line called Matilda Jane. Like others have said, I am just not sure how you would pronounce Alinna. I guess I am just not sold on it, but that's just me. Or maybe consider a different spelling, like Alynna?

My thoughts are that as long as YOU and your hubby love it that's all that really matters. If chose a less common spelling of my daughter's name (which I think is the more phonetically correct spelling of her name), and people constantly spell her name incorrectly. However, I still prefer the less common spelling and love it just as it is. Go with what is in your heart.

I think that it's cute. There is value in keeping it simple.

ETA: When I first read this, I pronounced it AH-LIN-AH. In that case, it is spelled phonetically, and if she is dealing with teachers who have good sense, then that will be their first pronunciation. LINN! Also, teachers who don't take the energy to confirm pronunctions early on are awful. It's not like her name is JH$#^*.
