I have been teaching school on the Northside of FW for 6 years now. I am EXTREMELY burned out teaching ESL/low socio economic students and am noticing myself develop a bad attitude towards life in general and my family. I am good at teaching. I was the teacher of the year 2 years ago and my students seem to enjoy me and sometimes I do enjoy them. Some days though I think they are horribly disrespectful and rude and feel angry towards the ones who are day to day trouble makers. The main part of all of this is all the 'extra' work required of me outside of class. Extra training, tutoring, paper work, science fairs, math night, etc. I have a family--a son 16 mos and Ill have a daughter in January. They dont deserve my horrible mood when I come home or even worse, they dont deserve to see me crying because I am so miserable.

I need a new job for a while. I have to make about the same income with health insurance. My husband is the SAHD and he is disabled and cant work. What are my options? Im in desperate need of ideas before I totally lose it!

What can I do next?

Hi there. I taught on the Northside (at Elder) for 2 years. Recently ESCAPED to EMSISD. It is SOOOOO much better I cannot even tell you. However, that being said I am still busy and have some stress but feel that work is more enjoyable. I have a nine month old but come home in a great mood. Check out a different district....what I am doing now is how I also thought teaching would be. I miss the kids though.....believe it or not. Good luck to you! Also, one other idea - have you considered being a teacher's teacher in an alternative certification place?

Have you thought about school library work? it ties into what you already know about schools, but gives you a different take on it. i'm a librarian and love my job on most days. ;)

I decided to stay home for that very reason. Go to www.westathome.com or www.arise.com and check out the legit work from home opportunities. It has been wonderful. I told my husband the other day that I don't know that I'll ever go back to teaching even if I do go back to work. I just can't do it anymore. I've been in 3 different districts, and I've seen some of the most political, underhanded things going on, and never has it ever been for the benefit of the students. It's always benefitting the reputation of the school or the pride of the admin. I just can't do it anymore. I completely understand.

Okay, I just saw about your husband. Hmmm you know what? My husband works for BNSF and said that they would hire me pretty quick probably because I have a masters and I can speak Spanish. You teach ESL, so are you bilingual? Check with BNSF to see what they might have. They have much better pay and benefits and are super family-friendly.

Sound like you need a change. Have you thought of teaching in another district. I taught for 4 years before I had my children and now I stay home. I was in lower income school and it very hard to work in those schools. Maybe if you changed grades and school district you might find teaching fun again.
