Listeria is nothing to mess with. Take him in and they'll test him. Then you'll know for sure.
OK I realize none of you can actually answer that question but I'm worried about my little guy. My 2 year old son had a lot of cantaloupe from various different unknown sources over the last couple of weeks. Funny thing is he never ate cantaloupe before 2 weeks ago but all of a sudden they were everywhere - at church, at a friend's bbq, etc. And he realized he loved them and ate and ate. Then of course I hear about the recall. I read the articles and realize California isn't affected and sigh a breath of relief. Gave him some more cantaloupes that magically appeared everywhere we went. Today, I read another article saying one case has been found in Cali. today, my son is home sick b/c he's been having diarrhea since yesterday afternoon. No fever or vomiting but he even woke up last night to diarrhea and was crying & clutching his stomach saying it hurt. All the other times he's had vomiting/diarrhea, he's never complained about his stomach actually hurting. I'm wondering what I should do if anything... do you think he could have eaten an infected cantaloupe?? :(

Anything is possible. Do they list what they symptoms of those who actually did are, what to watch for, and what you should do if he did?
Maybe a quick call to the pediatrician will ease your mind.
When in doubt.... get it checked out.
But i was wondering the same thing today. I ate half a cantelope today and then my coworker told me about the recall. Web says melons from Cali and Colorado. Well, mine came from Kroger! How am I supposed to know it's state of origin!
In that case call the pediatrician's office and ask. It certainly won't hurt and it will ease your mind.
the chances are low that he ate an infected one, but if you need to alleviate your fears - then talk to the pediatrician and get him tested...
OK, Listeriosis (Listeria) is a serious infection usually caused by eating food contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. The disease primarily affects older adults, pregnant women, newborns and adults with weakened immune systems. People who are at high risk are those 60 and older, those with weakened immune systems from transplants and people with chronic diseases. Symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, diarrhea, headache, stiff neck, confusion and convulsions. Listeriosis can cause miscarriages and stillbirths.
The only way to know for certain if you need to be concerned is to call your pediatrician's office or local ER, tell them what you told us, and ask what you should do ~ take him in, not be concerned, etc.
God bless.
I would have him checked if they are now on the list since it is growing from when I first heard about it,it has reached 16 states now.I really hope it was't from the fruit but it has now killed 8 people many are sick just from the listeria,he is clutching his tummy which is a serious sign that should not be voided.
