Weird Reaction to Mosquito Bites in Toddler?

My little boy was bitten by a mosquito yesterday afternoon on three spots on his leg. I saw this almost immediately after it happened... I know it was a mosquito because I saw it flying around and tried to swat it but without success! The little welts popped up like normal. However, this morning, 2 of the 3 have turned into nickel-sized welts, are swollen and hot. I can't figure it out. Maybe he has some mild allergy to one type of mosquito? Any thoughts/ideas? He is not in any pain and doesn't touch or itch them. He just doesn't want them touched by me!

What can I do next?

My son has had the same problem and some formed HUGE blisters. I feel so bad for him because I can tell he's miserable. Here's what works for us - -

1. Warm Aveeno Baths
2. Cortizone Cream
3. Benadryl on an as needed basis

The first two seem to help keep it under control.

My husband and children all react to mosquito bites in this way, sometimes even significantly larger than what you are describing. I think some people just react differently to the bites. I don't think you need to worry, but I understand how you feel. I always feel so bad for my children, because they're so small and these bites are so huge! I just always keep the mosquito repellant nearby if we're going to be out. :-)

My daughter does the same thing when she is bit by mosquitos. They swell and hold a lot of heat for a little while. I wasn't sure what had bit her at first so I took her took the doctor thinking it might have been a spider bite, he said no, that she just had a major allergic reaction to the mosquitos. He gave me some samples of some cream to put on them, and told me to just make sure she has bug repellent on when she goes out, and to keep putting it on her while she is outside.
Best of Luck,

My husband got bitten by a mosquito 3 years ago, and the welt has never gone away. He has never been allergic to them before or since that one reaction.

Try what the other mom's suggested, and also bring it up with your Dr. as it could be an allergy.

The same thing happened to my 2 year old son. I actually took him to the doctor b/c one on his ankle and on his forhead had swelling around them, along with the redness and hot feel which I had never seen before. Turned out it was just how he reacted to them and they went away with a few days. I used Benedryl cream and would just keep an eye on them.

My son has this too.. the bites swell up to a grotesque size and it is very worrisome. Recently one bit him on the forehead, and you would have thought he had a tumor or something... but it didn't seem to bother him that much. I'm not a big fan of using strong meds on my little ones, especially since it was on his face/head, so I made a paste of baking soda + a little water and dabbed it on the bite and it actually worked well. Swelling went down and it seemed to relieve the heat. good luck!!

My daughter is allergic to most mosquitoes. When she gets bit, the bite swells up to the size of my palm, very hot to the touch, and a white ring around it! The first time this happened, it was on her eyebrow and swelled her eye shut! After giving her benedryl per the doctor's office and the swelling did not go down (in fact it got worse) I was told to take her to the ER. They prescribed and oral medication called "atarax." It works wonders. From then on every spring I would call the pedi's office for a refill and she never goes out without being sprayed down with some sort of insect repellent. From what you described, I believe he may have a minor allergy. You may want to call the pedi just to be sure, but they will probably have you see if it will respond to Benedryl. Hope that helps.

My 3 yr old son is allergic to mosquito bits as well. His bites swell, turns red, holds heat and blisters (blisters on top of blisters) like he was burned. His do not itch they hurt. We use Hydrocort (just a tiny amount on the bite). It drys it up pretty fast and takes the pain away. The red spot fads to a light brown and stays for a couple of months. When this first happened I thought it was going to leave a scar, but it did not. I hope you find some relief for your kiddo.

My daughter is two and when she gets bit by mosquitos they get big, red and swollen and get worse if she scratches them. They will get better and go away, for some reason toddler mosquito bites get ugly like that. And if it's not bothering him then his ok, if anything get some of that benadryl spray in case it starts itching.

Our Dr said Cortaid on the bites. I use off deep woods on mine. Rather worry about West Nile than a little deet!! You can die from West Nile. You could always make a call to you pedi's nurse.

My son has the same reaction to mosquito bites. My pedi and the allergist just said that some kids are more allergic to the bites than others. They recommended Benadryl liquid to help with the itching and redness. They also informed me (of course after I had already used it twice) that the creams (Benadryl, AfterBite for Kids, etc.) can cause seizures in small children! The benadryl really seems to help my toddler. Other than that let's all just pray for some relief from all this rain!

Hi! I have an 11 year old step-son and a 3 year old daughter whom both have the exact same reaction to mosquito bites as your little boy. We've seen a doctor several times (especially with the oldest) about this and it's just an allergic reaction. Often times I'll just put a little cortizone cream on them and in a few days it'll go away but there have also been times that my stepson's ankle has swollen to the size of a baseball because of the bites and then the doctor usually recommends that I just give him some benadryll or other type of allergy medication. The only one that I've found works best is giving them children's claritin. Generally as long as they aren't touching the bites they are fine but my children have often told me that when they are touched it is sore. I would definitely keep a close eye on him when he has the bites just to make sure that they don't develope into anything serious however don't fret about it too much. With all of the rain we've had recently I would definitely suggest using some kind of a bug spray on him when he goes out.

JS,
This has been happening to my 3 year old lately too.
The welts are quite big and very red/hot. They also get a small ring around them after a few days making them appear like a bull’s eye.
I think we must have some kind of super mosquito since all of the rain.
I just put an ice cube on the area as soon as I can to help with the swelling and use a cortisone cream for a few days. If they start to bug (no pun intended) him you can give him some Benadryl to give him some relief and it would help with the swelling as well.

I got bit by a mosquito a few weeks ago and it got me on about 5-6 spots on the back of my legs and all the bites were about the size of a nickel on my legs too. Both of my toddlers are having the same reaction too and the bites usually look about the size of a nickel and then get smaller as time goes on.
I know the ones I had were so itchy!

My 2 yr old gets the same way. I had to finally take him to his peditrician & they prescribed a medicine called Luxiq. It is a mousse type medicine & when I put it on him, the redness & swelling almost immediately go down. He still has the bites for a couple of days but they aren't nearly as bad & he doesn't throw a fit when I touch them. I love this stuff. I also use a insect repellant called Naturapel, not sure on the spelling, but it doesn't have Deet in it & that helps alot also. I got mine from Wal-mart in the section where they keep the bombs & foggers for ant's & roaches. I hope it gets better, cause I know how my little one feels when he gets them.

My daughter is allergic to mosquito bites as well. The same thing happens to her. I just put some Benedryl cream on it and it gets better. Just make sure to spray him with Off or some type of bug repellent when you know you will be outdoors to try to keep the bites to a minimum.
