I have tried LOTS of things trying to lose my "baby" weight (my "baby" is almost 3!). Does anyone have anything safe and reliable that they have done to lose weight? I need to lose 50 pounds, so I know it will take awhile, but I am discouraged by my repeated failures in this area.

Hi C.,

First, don't be too hard on yourself. It took me until my baby was 7 before I could shed the baby fat. I recommend against any of the fast approaches to weight loss, as you will just gain it back, unless you make permanent lifestyle changes. I did things slow and one of the key things for me was to keep only healthy snacks in the house (and with me while I'm on the run) - I found that eating the kids snacks throughout the day was a big culprit for me. Also, exercise is very important, even if it's just using a DVD at home for 20 minutes a day - consistency is the most important thing. Also, eating 3 regular meals a day is very important, starting with breakfast. One of the best things about this approach is that you'll be setting a lifetime example for your children. Focusing on healthy eating and exercise is the most important thing and it will most likely come with the wonderful side affect of weight loss. But, if you focus just on the weight loss aspect, it's highly unlikely to be permanent.

As background, I speak from experience with a lifelong struggle with weightloss, and I tried all the quick approaches only to gain it back. It wasn't until I was in my late 20s that I finally got it, that the weight wasn't going to stay off if I didn't eat right and exercise. Also, the exercise means that you don't have to be too strict about what you eat. I did backslide while pregnant with the first child and gained 20 pounds that I did not need and that's what took me the 7 years to lose (after the birth of the 2nd child - I did good while pregnant with him and only gained an additional 20 pounds).

Also, before you get started, make sure that your thyroid isn't the culprit. If you have low thyroid function (hypothyroid), which is indicated by an elevated TSH, you can have lots of difficulty losing and keeping the weight off - that was another thing I experienced.

I have tried many things also Right now what I am doing is taking whole body cleasner to clean myself out and so far I have lost 10 pounds and also walk 30minutes a day see if that will work for you

Arbonne has an awesome weight loss system. It's botanically based, and safe for ALL ages. It won't make you feel jittery, but it's very effective. A friend of mine lost 25 lbs over 3 months. She was careful about what she ate, but didn't necessarily go on a diet, and she said she didn't do any extra exercising (other than cleaning house and running around after kiddos!). The most amazing thing about it, is that it makes you crave the good things... salads, fruits and veggies.

i really stand by Weight Watchers meetings....it helped keep me accountable. I knew that someone was there to see my number on the scale every week so i had to be good that week so i could produce results on the scale. I've lost 50 lbs since July 2006. I also workout 5-6 times a week at a gym (LA Fitness). I go to their step aerobics or Body Works (weight training) classes. all of these "appointments" helped keep me on the right track, focused, and committed to keeping my appointments. I would highly stress that whatever eating plan you choose....you MUST make exercise part of your routine. the weight will come off faster...thus, helping you stay committed to the entire weight loss process altogether. You'll see results faster and won't be discouraged if the weight loss is too slow.

Weight Watchers has definitely taught be how to eat properly...in correct portion size and to actually love eating healthy choices. I actually LOVE whole wheat pasta, whole wheat bread, egg whites now and sugar free puddings and jellies! i couldn't say that prior to last july. and a key to my success so far is letting myself have one "cheat" meal per week....i look forward to it and i really don't feel like i'm depriving myself at all. when you have a several pounds to lose like i did (more than 20)...i needed to have a "cheat meal" because my weight loss journey has been sooo long. I needed to survive and stay in the game ...i never allowed myself to feel too deprieved.

You can do it! Just stick to it...never give up, keep working out, stay committed to making wise food choices and it'll start to melt off. [by the way...take a pic of yourself now so you can look back on it when the weight is off! it'll help you keep the pounds off forever. also: measure your waist, thighs, hips, chest, arms -- so you can gradually see improvements in lost inches as well as lost lbs.]

I agree with healthy eating and such - but sometimes the weight just won't go away (which is what happened to me). I found a natural and permanent way to lose - and got rid of 25 pounds w/o counting and measuring.

I have lost 30 lbs in the past few months with the help of a precription from my doctor called Adipex (or Phentermine, the generic option). I drink a can of Slim Fast for breakfast and lunch and then eat a normal dinner. The prescription keeps me from getting hungry.

I've been struggling with the same challenges as yourself. My daughter is 3 and will be 4 at the end of May and I have about 40-50 lbs that I need to lose.

I just started the Nutrisystem diet. I'm on Day 14 and have already lost 7.6 lbs. You lose more at first, because you lose water weight as you begin to eat healthier and drink more water....your body then releases the water it has been retaining. But, you also begin to lose fat too. I'm already squeezing into a pair of pants that I hadn't been able to wear in a while (one size smaller).

The first week of my Nutrisystem was very hard, but now I'm on a roll and seeing the progress keeps me motivated. Eventually, the weight loss will slow down to probably 4-5 lbs. a month. Most importantly, this diet IS training me to think about what I eat and to eat more veggies, fruit & salads while dramatically lowering my carb intake. I use to eat so much bread, really at every meal. I love bread and I do miss it. But, eventually I will have it back and in a smaller portion size and only whole wheat/grain breads.

Also, it is important to know that I began walking the day I started my diet. I consistently walk everyday now and have gone from 20-30 minutes walking to 45 minutes to an hour already in my daily walk. This exercise/cardio is just as important as the better eating. I'm not concerned about going off the diet in 4 - 5 months and regaining, as I will have completely changed any bad habits I had and will have replaced them with good habits. I never was one to eat real poorly before or even overeat or binge at all...but I ate too much bread and my portions while appearing normal at restaurants or home for my meals were actually much bigger than we need or should have, I also did not eat enough veggies, fruit & salads...and didn't drink my 8-8 oz. glasses of water/day and snacked a bit too much. Plus, I was not consistent with exercise and got very little focused exercise. So, it all adds up.

The Nutrisystem diet/system/routine, will give my metabolism a boost.

My "baby" just turned 2 and I finally gave it up and joined Lady of America. I also got a new year's special with a personal trainer and did that for 4 sessions. It took a couple months (at 4x a week) to see a difference on the scale, but I feel better and look better than I did before my first baby (who is almost 4)!

I used Weight Watchers after my first baby, and it worked great! I consistently lost about 2 pounds a week. I don't have time to go to the meetings, so I did it using their online program. It kept me accountable for what I ate because you record everything you eat and can see how many points you have left. I also joined a gym with free childcare.

Have you tried Weight Watchers? It is truly the safest, healthiest way to lose weight. If you do try it, I would suggest going to the meetings, and not just doing it online. You will get so much out of the meetings and will be more successful quicker. Good luck!!

I definitely recommend Weight Watchers. I have lost 63 pounds since last year and working out definitely helps as well as going to the meetings.

I still have more to lose but I am more than 1/2 way there. I was heavy when I got pregnant w/my youngest and now I am weighing what I haven't weighed in 7 yrs. HOORAY!

Definitely measure yourself and workout. Weight Watchers is in fact the healthiest way to do it.

I just lost my baby fat--24 lbs. in 8 weeks. I did the Optifast program through Spa 02. I thought it was easy. I've never been a "diet" person but am not getting any younger and still hadn't lost the extra weight. good luck.
