I am new to this web site and would like to ask a question about weening my 4 month old from breast to bottle. I am not pumping because I do not have any luck doing it. I am giving him soy formkula which he doesnt seem to mind. I have given it to him in a syringe so he would get use to the taste. I have tried many different bottles and he is not going for it. I am the only person doing this because my husband doesnt get home until late. The dr. said to try a soft sippy cup, he will suck a little but it mainly goes all over him.
I would love any suggestions you all may have. I would like to go back to work a day or two and I would love the freedom of leaving him home and going out for a couple of hours!!!

Thank you,
J.

I weened both of my boys off the breast in different ways. My youngest was at 6 months due to a medical treatment that I had to undergo. He went from breast directly to bottle in one day because of the medicines and radiation in my body. How we did it was to poke extra holes in the nipple of a Nuk nipple/bottle system. The Nuk type are shaped different than most bottles and my little guy hated having a strong blast of milk in his mouth from a single hole in the nipple. So, by making a few extra holes, it was just like nursing and he took to that bottle very quickly. We had tried seven different kinds before that one. My nurse aunt suggested doing the multi~hole thing and it worked!

Hi J.,

I used the Dr. Brown bottles. My son had a hard time with all other bottles. You can buy them anywhere. CVS, Walgreen, Babies R Us. Also, if the smallest nipple doesn't work, maybe try the next biggest size to see if he gets more of the formula that way. Hope it helps.

We went with the playtex drop ins. The latex nipple seemed to work best for my duaghter. She wouldn't take any other bottle. I have also heard good things about the breast bottle. A little expensive but might be worth it. I also had a friend whose daughter went on "bottle strike" and found a pacifier she liked, then bought the same brand bottle which she took great. Good luck.

As terrible as this sounds, when your son is hungry, he will take a bottle. The best suggestion I have is to leave him with your husband for 8-12 hours. This helps because he doesn't smell your milk. Then, have your husband offer him a bottle when he seems hungry. He might end up skipping one feeding, but in all likelihood he will not skip more than one.
Best of luck.
